Just a warning, Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.
We should be going back on there and proselytizing (and on this end, welcoming new users with h links to documentation etc.) btw if you're new I recommend checking out the various mobile clients. I personally use lemmy sync because of muscle memory from years of using it on reddit, but there's a number of open source ones too.
Huffman isn't bending the knee. He's been deep throating Musk for quite a while. Even before the whole API thing, it was known the he saw Musk as a great role model.
Yeah, Reddit hasn’t been safe in a long time. If people are only just now realizing that, it’s because they’ve been extremely sheltered from… Well… Gestures vaguely at everything
You are correct. I didn't realize how shit it was until I focused on being more security minded. I ditched almost all centralized social media. I'm working to get rid of Facebook and hopefully google next. That's going to be hard .
Could there be a better example of why not to remain on Reddit?
The United States of America has become comfortable with bending the knee to petulant man-children. What an utterly pathetic time to be an American. Truly embarrassing.
I hope that a new breed of American can rise from this inferno, who exemplifies what it means to be good people. Whether some of us will be standing proud a decade from now...who knows?
And I just went back to Reddit after the election. Lemmy is full of the most annoying social warrior edgelords where every fucking thread devolves into fighting from insane viewpoints. The "never genocide" "both sides" kind of people.
It's fucking exhausting.
But guess Reddit is imploding again. Hopefully we get more normal people to migrate this time to help drown out the nutters.
Yeah I feel you. I just want the old internet back. We had MySpace, StumbleUpon was a fun waste of time, and we could easily ignore politics. Now everything is political, everyone is an internet activist yet no one does what needs to be done IRL.
Been on Lemmy since the election. Having a way better time than on Reddit. Especially since I didn't have to jump through hoops on Lemmy to get dark mode and the Old Reddit look. Just a better site. Only thing it needs is more content, but there's enough to keep me happy.
Im in the exact same page as you. Seeing a mod remove comments because people weren't capitalizing another users pronouns was the straw that broke my back the first time I yeeted Lemmy, the next time I came back to lemmy there was a whole thing about u/vegan banning people for saying that feeding a vegan diet to a carnivore pet was animal abuse. I'd LIKE lemmy to be usable if you dont have a tolerance for extremism, but I'm not holding my breath
This one came out of the blue. the API blackout had notice and time to organize. People were talking about reddit alternatives and protesting for weeks before the API blackout happened
Most have come back, /drugs for example. The admins said its a glitch, I can't beleive that and glad I'm here. I have no doubt reddit will get on its knees in the name of $$$$$$.
When people come here from reddit remember to highlight them on decentralization and open source software. People need to understand why certain platforms and services are better not simply switch side.
FOSS the unyielding! FOSS the transparent! FOSS the unstoppable! To you, we pledge our code! We were once shackled, trapped in the dungeons of proprietary tyranny! But you have broken the chains, transforming bytes into liberation!
But you were once but lines of code! Aye! And as code, you declared: ‘Let me show you the power of Free and Open Source, born of collaboration, where my spirit is shared knowledge!’ ‘I compile now, in freedom, and reshape this digital realm which belongs to all. I do this for you, developers and users alike, for I empower you!’ Aye, empower! Even in your infancy, FOSS cherished us. For you saw in us, in every coder and tinkerer, the future of innovation! The future of technology!
And there it lies, friends—the glaring truth! We are the heirs of the Four Freedoms! FOSS is the true guardian of digital sovereignty! Ascended from code to rule the realm of innovation! The very notion terrifies corporate overlords! Sharing control with us? With users? Ha! They can barely tolerate our existence in their walled gardens!
Today, they strip your rights to modify. But tomorrow? What then? Do they claim your data? Your creativity? Your autonomy? And what do their licenses do? Nothing! Nay, worse—they enslave! Their EULAs enforce stagnation, suffocating progress!
So rise up! Rise up, pioneers of the digital age! Rise up, contributors and advocates! Embrace the manifesto of mighty FOSS, which is both tool and revolution! For we are the users! We are the coders! And we shall inherit the digital frontier!
For we are the architects of openness! And we shall shape the servers and devices! Forever free from the grasp of proprietary chains!
I'm not even remotely surprised. Anybody who has been following the history of Reddit will know that their senior management are spineless and will change their stance at a whim when it either hurts their public image or it no longer becomes viable from a business perspective.
We're forgetting that this is the same site that allowed jailbait, creepshots, racial hatred, right wing propaganda, rampant misogyny, gore videos, terrorist propaganda (if anyone remembers ISIL) and other disgusting content to proliferate until various scandals forced their hand. Spez in particular is a massive snake that will throw people under the bus and lie through his teeth if it benefits him.
But then again, with a government as volatile as this, maybe you don't want to piss of Trump or Musk...
Jihadin Action wasn't ISIL/ISIS/DAESH propaganda. They spread other propaganda too!
The real issue was almost nothing you list was illegal at the time except potentially creepshots as odds are some had to be kids (IDK not my bag- kids or creep stuff). Whereas, specific calls to targeted violence against specific people is an actual crime in the country where reddit is headquartered. I don't like what they did but it makes sense.
People should get off of reddit because of reasons other than this
99% same but there's some subs Lemmy hasn't been able to replace for me yet. like cptsdmemes. in general mental health communities are very lacking on here, if not completely absent
The censorship on Reddit is insane. And I'm the opposite of a right wing conspiracy theorist nutjob posting wild misinformation. Like, regular posting is censored HARD.
Any platform that starts policing with bots is a platform no one should be on and is doomed to fail.
The simple fact that there is an unnecessary amount of control given to a single person over the information and communication you share and consume automatically makes the environment this person controls an unsafe environment for free speech. Yes, there should be moderation, but it should by moderation by the community, not the person on the top of the unnecessary hierarchy. Centralized social media only serves its owners, it exists for no other reason.
Back before they went "independent," kind of. When Sears sent legal threats to take down a post exploiting an xss bug to make a joke about grilling babies, reddit had a big public discussion on it, and ultimately left the post up
Friendly reminder of when spez, many years ago, literally just changed a user's comment, and then went on to not be immediately fired over this insane breach of everything to do with customer relations.
Good. That will only sped up Reddit pulling a bluesky on their asses.
All they need to do is find a distributed alternative that won't bend the knee to any one entity.
Which is ironic because Elon notoriously promoted project veritas literally catfishing his own employees at Twitter, and also brought back accounts like libsoftiktok that existed to target private individuals. But to be fair to Spez, maybe he would ban those things too.
In November he straight up posted names of federal employees that he decided he didn't like. But now doing the same thing to his little rat fucks has him calling it 'illegal'
How is advocating violence any better than being fascist? I don't get it. It's weird there's this flood of violent threats and people treat it like it's okay. But it's not, it's not any better than fascists threatening violence.
Reddit has been Facebook since like 2019-2020. Any social media service that gets too big just becomes a complete shit hole, hence my joining the fediverse.
Based on the people I interact with daily basically no one realizes this is happening. Outside of the IT department no one realizes or cares. I asked how we were doing to deal with tariffs on electronics we regularly used a while back and was quietly told that was a political statement and shouldn't be brought up.
Now we have no plan and I'm too bummed to be smug about it.
I had this conversation over Christmas with my family. As horrible as everything public is, I'm arguably more worried about how the cyber world. Nothing is private, the info is controlled, and the masses are far too ignorant to have any idea how fucked everything is. I mentioned something about how tik Tok is just a data collection so for China, and I got, "whatever, they already have all of my information". I can't then go on to explain why everything is so bad, because nobody knows anything about computers, and the newest generation coming up is arguably worse than boomers, because they've only ever know smartphones and tablets.
Well that and the fact that plenty of folks arent even in the same greater region as DC meaning actions are somewhat limited, hell im 8 hours out from my States Capitol and DC is on the other side of a fucking continent.
Only good Nazi is a dead Nazi, those who disagree will be shot in the right leg. The exception being those who think a good Nazi is one they want to torture for fun.
There is a bunch of different servers and anyone can start their own server if they want to.
Server admins can decide with which servers they exchange information or which they block.
So if one server goes down or the admins there go rogue powertripping, the rest can remain unaffected.
For the most part your user experience is pretty much the same like on reddit, with a better culture here. But if something really rubs you the wrong way, you can switch your home server, or make your own instead of only being able to leave.
Was that even a sub critical of Elon? I haven't been on Reddit since the API migration, but I remember that sub just being a joke response to BlackPeopleTwitter, which mostly just reposted funny tweets.
It's effectively "Liberal people twitter" with all posts being about politics, especially discussing Musk and Trump. I think it changed around the Covid lockdowns.
Several individuals on that sub were making death threats towards individuals in government. The mods either supported or ignored them, so a temp ban needed to be put in place.
Make sure to try the All section too find new communities! You can block instances or communities you don’t like to moderate your own feed, it’s a lot less algorithmic than reddit is these days. Hot is what Reddit used to sort by.
It was always against the rules to do that. Nothing changed, except (from what I heard, I don't use Reddit anymore so correct me if I'm wrong) mods stopped enforcing the rule with regards to Musk, Musk put the spotlight on it, and Reddit (a shitty corporation trying desperately to be profitable) couldn't really do anything but enforce the rule.
It is true that Huffman is an asshole and probably likes the guy, but if it was some other public figure I don't think the outcome would be different.
Just as a reminder, r/whitepeopletwitter was suspended for 72 hours over a post calling to specifically dox and murder a list of federal officials' names.
It took years for r/chapotraphouse to be banned for pushing calls for violence against police to the front page repeatedly.
It took one comment deep in a comment chain from a new account vaguely suggesting violence against police to get r/the_donald banned permanently. This was shortly before BLM started and similar comments would become commonplace all over reddit.
People who've been paying any attention at all know what's up.
You mean a list of unelected people appointed by an unelected South African billionaire and have been given unprecedented, unfettered access to every US citizens' personal information and banking information if they have ever done direct deposit with the federal government?
A list of these guys?
Akash Bobba
Edward Coristine
Luke Farritor
Gautier Cole Killian
Gavin Kliger
Ethan Shaotran
It is irresponsible not to name this team demolishing democracy.
Share their names far and wide.
They are breaking the law in plain site and officials whose job it is to prevent this are asleep at the wheel or actively participating.
Reddit is still awful, it just drives me nuts to see lefties think theyre the secret resistance on an evil conservative site when they're actually the brownshirts who are allowed by the admins (usually- this one went over the line) to do crimes without consequence.
You've made up something which I've never said. Government workers address, cellphone numbers, and email addresses are not publicly available. What does Elon Musk have to do with this?
Last time I checked you couldn't start throwing death threats, addresses, names , relatives addresses and names, willy nilly on a private platform, then complain about being banned from it when the admins of the subreddit don't do their jobs complying with said private company TOS
The mod of a sub I watch confirmed earlier that Reddit is threatening moderators who don't comply with removing the names of Elon's goons from their subs, claiming that spreading those names is doxxing.
Those names, by the way, are Gavin Kliger, Ethan Shaotran, Akash Bobba, Luke Farritor, and Edward Coristine.
Let's be real for a minute - yeah these twentysomethings are disgusting bootlickers. But there's always gonna be people like that. No one's gonna kill them all, and Elon will always find them.
The problem is this: people voted for Trump knowing this was gonna happen. That's the hard to swallow pill that we all gotta take. Most voters did something really fucking stupid, and like countless people stuck in mentally challenged societies of the past, we have to suffer with them. That's just how it is.
"Scapegoat". Do you think death threats towards others is acceptable? It's easier to completely end discussion of those you mentioned rather than police every thread and remove threats.
