Wait, after all those murders and sabotaging during the elections the people still managed to elect a really worthy president (seems like the best president I've seen in all the countries the last years)??
Guessing it is common for the state department to send a representative. Perhaps the Secretary of State since it’s an important neighbour. Since it’s campaign time, you could see others going if they believe it helps their reelection bid somehow ( though I don’t know how), but it would not be unusual if only the US ambassador to Mexico is present. I don’t know of any foreign politician that attend the US presidential inauguration.
Barak Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate nine months after his inauguration. Subsequently, he used a drone to murder an American citizen, among a litany of other atrocities.
Best thing Obama did was pulling out of Iraq, finally leaving an illegal war, so hats off for that. But all his talk about envisioning a world free of nuclear weapons and then not even attempting disarmament of the US ones kinda seems weak.
Nobel Laureate is a bit of an overstatement but she was part of an organization that won the Nobel Prize, similar to how Amnesty International has won it a few times:
She was a contributing author to the 2007 IPCC report, maybe not a huge deal (there were 100+ authors) but it is reasonably relevant. Here is a chapter that she contributed to (I don't know if there is more than one) and her earlier work is cited.
edit ok I was wrong here, I understand what people disagreeing with me are saying
The top comment on this thread should be an unqualified “Hell yeah!” not speculation over whether she is going to be murdered.
I am not attacking you, I understand the knee jerk reaction, I am just pointing this out because I think it is true. I also don’t question that you are genuine in your concern, that isn’t what I mean.
To everyone else on this thread, especially if you are white/European or from the US and are white please don’t joke about the President of Mexico getting assassinated given the history with Mexico and the US (and by extension Europe). It isn’t funny, even when you are being sarcastic.
I might be wrong but I don't think the commenter was joking. It's not a joke to say a lot of politicians have been assassinated and to question how someone in such a situation managed to get safely elected. I wonder the same thing.
I understand but I literally just left Nogales to visit my stepfather and during my week there there were so many campaign ads. The only thing he told me about them is that candidates from all positions from Mayor to Governor and up wind up dead all the time.
Apparently it's really common and my father had a similar reaction to the top comment. Yes it's scary but it's something that the government needs to take precautions for

What should be and what are, are frequently two different things. In this case, political candidates shouldn't be commonly murdered, but that's a reality for them and one they should be planning for.
And it's not a knee jerk reaction, it's just a legitimate worry posted by someone who pays attention to the news. I'm sad to say that I both had the 'hell yeah' reaction right before thinking 'I hope her security can keep her safe' thoughts back to back.
It's interesting how ahead their government is with some things and behind it is with others (generally speaking they have a lot of crime in their larger cities).
A person with good ideas that leaves their religion at the door would be swell right now. Religion only divides us into smaller, scarier groups. (See: Christian nationalism, women's rights, the middle east, etc.)
That said, it is a damn shame Bernie didn't have a fair chance.
Not at all surprising to me. America is deeply reactionary. Made worse by the fact that our electoral system gives disproportionate representation to rural areas.
In October 1991, Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari went to Stanford University to give a talk on the benefits of Latin American neoliberalism, but was met with a demonstration against it. The angry college girl holding the sign with the inscription "Fair Trade and Democracy Now" in English is the current president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum

They still had newspapers in the 90s. And some pictures you can only find on old newspaper micro film. So they're in black and white. Even color printed newspapers would catalog their back issues in black and white.
Yes, and I voted for Bernie when he ran and I would absolutely vote for AOC if/when she does run. Just… the choices in this election cycle are wanna-be, half-demented dictator-for-life vs a "moderate" Democrat who, while he's gotten a surprising amount done, isn't exactly renowned for pushing the corporations hard on climate change.
Yeah, it's a pretty frustrating time to be leaning left. And given the chaos Trump would unleash, it's not like there is any choice at all about whether or not to vote for Biden… 😿
Which US politicians typically attend the inauguration of the Mexican President? I'm genuinely curious, it's not something I've ever paid attention to and which US politicians attend it isn't usually something that gets news coverage here.
Edit but yeah being technically capable aside, many eugenists were PhDs and philosophers. Sam Harris comes to mind as he is a racist and a sophist with lots of academic qualifications. So yeah, ethics and morals also matter greatly. Mexico seems to have lucked out, good for them!
I'm going to move to Mexico I guess. Here in The Netherlands, as well as most of the European countries, right wing extremism is on the rise. Who would have thought it would be Mexico to show we don't have to live in a dystopian shit show.
If you do or know someone that will do, please take into consideration that the housing market in México, right now, has been favoring foreigners and that in some areas, they've displaced the locals and raised prices so much that they can't afford to be there anymore (be for shopping, working, etc.). Please don't contribute to this and research before, do not try to pay in euros/dollars, come legally and work legally.
Also, depending on what you move, make sure to take into account areas with drought, and future rain and heat patterns. Climate change is only going to get worse. Make sure you have a secure water supply to work with.
Ok so I'm not moving for the coming 10 years for sure, and if I'm moving it probably won't be Mexico. But the climate change thing is something I worry about. I live in the Netherlands, most parts are below sea level. The dykes are being reinforced, but the plans for now are finished in about 10 years and won't be high and strong enough in about 5 years, so we need to start to reinforce it even more 5 years before the current plans are being completed. At the same time ground water levels are getting lower, so trees are unable to get water from the ground and die, so the roots will die too and won't be able to hold the ground together. It's getting harder and harder pumping drinking water from the ground. Next to that, salt seawater is normally held back in the ground by the ground water, but because it's level is getting lower while the sea level is rising, salt seawater is making it's way into the ground, killing more greenery because it's polluting the groundwater and making it undrinkable. So I may be forced to move, as well as most inhabitants here if this shit continues. 10 to 12 million people forced to relocate due to lack of water AND too much water at the same time. Weird AF.
Ha! Jokes on you! I'm poor because I have to spend 1900 euros per month on rent alone so there's nothing to rob me of. You can't even rob me of my dignity anymore.
Jokes aside, I'm aware of the major issues Mexico has. I've never been there but I would love to visit as it's a beautiful country. But I'm too chicken to go due to the high crime rate etc. And tickets are too expensive, I wasn't joking about having no money because my decent salary is being sucked up completely by rent, taxes, bills, insurances and food.
But I'm glad Mexico has elected a leader I could only dream of. I hope she can make a change towards better. Or at least, I hope she is what she looks like. I mean, is she really good or only looks like that (like the president of India). At least she looks like Merkel + + +
She appears to be a Social Democrat, not a Socialist, so she should be safe as long as she plays ball with the US, rather than pushing back against US Imperialism.
Morena is a pretty solid party overall, and we should treat socdems in the global south differently from their counterparts in the imperial core.
AMLO for example is pushing hard against the US extradition of Julian Assange, even playing the the collateral murder video when some New York Times journalists started throwing shade. Morena also recognizes Palestine and is closing doors to Israel, against the wishes of the US.
Great to see the people of Mexico continuing to support Morena and reject liberalism, this is a great day.
lol @ the downvotes for mentioning the Cartel who is known for assassinating, at the very least threatening government employees and politicians, including actual presidents.
Gotta love these commends: she is less "radical" in her leftist stances as her predecessor.
But yes, surely Mexico will be invaded any minute now by the radical inventionist that is Joe Biden.
The important thing is she didn't die from the Cartels. Do you know how many politicians have been taken out by cartels in the last year. Just recently in April down in Chipas a cartel got 538 politicians to resign all on the same day and murdered 38.
To be a politician in Mexico from any party you need blessings from the right people.
Probably the same reason the whole party is still around.
It would be awesome to get a real input from someone who lives in Mexico (preferably a normal person and not a summer beach home/mansion owner who pretends to live like normal people do), but honestly don't know how likely they are to lurk here on Lemmy....surely there is at least one among us?
My skepticism stems mostly from the "popularity" of former president, supposedly reaching some 80%? Sounds pretty good if it's genuinely true, but it's eerily approaching fabled 90-100% authoritarian levels.
As you say, Mexico is a bit divisive about her, many calling her just a mere puppet of current president López Obrador and worrying about her not doing that much when she was state governor.
And many of her claims about feminism, ecologism, pro-Palestina positioning, are a bit weird, in respect of her former position and the little things she did in regard those.
What worries me personally rn is that legislative power will also be at her mercy. If she wants to do any change to Constitution (as Lopez Obrador already had tried many times), little to nothing will be able to stop her. For better or for worse.
She is a puppet of the current president, she was apponted by himself
That said, the opposition was also a woman but she was an unknown and 3 parties with different views allied to launch her as candidate
The party is projected to have qualified majority of the Congress and maybe senate so they'll be able to do a bunch of stuff so that may be worrying
They have done a lot of good stuff but also they are full of corruption like cancelling a great airport that still needs to be paid and building a shitty one very far away that no one wants to use and that interferes with the operation of the other airport so it doesn't really help with congestion
Sheinbaum is a climate scientist so I'm curious about who she'll appoint to the energy commission because the current government is all-in on carbon
She was selected and placed there as a mere puppet of current president amlo. México is indeed a narco governement but people who don't actuallly experience it first hand living it every day think that this facade is true.
She was married to a guy who was investigated for embezzlent but got off the hook because of political contacts.
Her father was a chemist who owned a solvent factory (he has passed away and she inherited the business) with very sketchy practices regarding toxic waste management. Factory is still hers and it still operating under the same principles.
Oh is this why Biden is suddenly cracking down on immigration and wanting to build the wall too? I had assumed it was just blatant appeals to the right.
Suddenly? Biden has barely changed the policies from the end of trumps administration. That's why the Republicans bitching about the open border are such clowns
Those are pretty good points. Still, you had to participate in Reddit in order to find that story.
The point is that news organizations, reporters, etc. need to start using fediverse platforms so we're not stuck still using Xitter and Reddit. Moreover, a source from a reputable news outlet would be preferred over social media.
so is she fucking good or not? what are her proposals? what is your opinion? give me good context for someone who isnt a mexican and isnt following their elections then.
god, its so hard to know the actual opinions of people about politics on a lib instance.
You. You are the reason they need to point it out.
Just move on. You think no one cares, but I care infinitely less about your comment on it than I do learning the background of an elected official, especially given the situation in Gaza.
