[OC] My weird hand
  • I hope this sets off a whole chain of people posting pictures of their truly weird hands.

For what it's worth my own right hand has bad arthritis, every finger is wonky in its own special way, also the thumb. And I'm old, so it's all veiny and speckled with liver spots. No, you're not getting a photo.

  • Hobbies Wednesday - what have you done this week?
  • Full inspection of all ten hives, plus I used my new battery powered strimmer to clear the long grass from around all the entrances. The bee inspectors are coming tomorrow to check for disease (European foulbrood reported within 3km) but all our colonies look healthy.

  • Louisiana's new "Ten Commandments" law actually contains eleven commandments
  • What's funny is that (according to the old testament) when Moses came down off the mountain with the tablets and found everyone worshipping the golden calf, he had a big hissy fit and smashed them. So then after doing quite a bit of murdering he had to go back up the mountain to get a second set. Exodus 32-34

I asked a religious relative how it was ok for Moses to murder people when he had only just be told by God himself "thou shalt not kill", and she said it was because the don't kill thing came further down the list than having only the one god.

  • The cycle of pants continues
  • I remember when flares came back in the 90s, the nostalgic hit I got from feeling the jeans flapping around my ankles was intense. It was just like the early 70s, when I was young and hot. Sigh.

  • Happy Juneteenth everyone!
  • Huh, I did not know that. Thanks! I was in a discussion over lunch the other day about chemistry - one woman revealed she was a chemistry teacher, which prompted an anti-science member of the group to scoff, "What relevance does chemistry have in daily life?" I gave cooking as a prime example of chemistry - cakes rise, sauces reduce, roasts brown. And now I can emulsifying to the list!

  • Happy Juneteenth everyone!
  • No. Combine the sauce with pasta, put it in an oven proof dish and grate extra cheese on top. Put in the oven until the topping is browned and bubbling. Then serve. (Also, add a bit of mustard to the cheese sauce, it perks up the flavour.)

  • What is your favorite kid friendly book made just for traumatizing children?
  • Struwwelpeter. We had an English copy handed down by my grandfather. It's insane.

Example: "Die gar traurige Geschichte mit dem Feuerzeug ("The Very Sad Tale with the Matches"): A girl plays with matches, accidentally ignites herself and burns to death. Only her cats mourn her."

  • Average vs Fame
  • -- pay for a large residence and security on the outskirts, then stay inside. Use disguises/body doubles when going out.

So ... you can everything you want, except sponteneity? Or privacy, with all those staff hanging around. And there'd still be some douche tracking your private jet.

  • A tale of two (pairs of) socks

The brown sock is my first ever. What is wrong with the picture? Yes, the sock is inside out. I could not figure out how to kitchener the toe, so I just cobbled it together. The lightbulb moment came when I was knitting my second pair of socks. No wonder the kitchener stitch didn't work! [Edit: the photo is in the comments. Second edit: and below. Facepalm.]

The pink socks are my WIP - I have progressed to knitting two at a time, magic loop, and am very pleased with myself.

In Scotland we call this a fankle

My lesson for today: Never, ever try a new technique without watching the YouTube video first. I'm knitting a pair of port and starboard socks for a friend. Started one on small circs, then thought, this would be a great project to try two at a time. Knitted up sock two to match, and figured I'd just knit them on to one long circ. Yeah right. Off to watch the video now ...

    Laptop rescue #2

I've just revived a second elderly laptop by installing Zorin - slightly more complicated this time due to a stubborn Windows partition (I just took a deep breath and deleted it). I swear it's running faster now than ever. It's not quite ten years old, a Lenovo Ideapad, so I'm very pleased to have saved it from landfill. The other Zorin laptop is even older, it's a little Toshiba Satellite. I bought a new battery for it a few years back and it's still chuntering along. It's been through a few Linux distros and seems happy with Zorin.

    It's 4.38am and I can't sleep, so here goes ...

I've freaked myself out somewhat by reading about human anatomy (Bill Bryson, The Body). What a machine! All these processes going on all the time, glands spurting out this or that hormone, heart thumping away, kidneys filtering out the salt I sprinkled on my dinner. It's amazing and alarming. I could help things out by sleeping, but here I am, wide awake. 4.44am now ...

    Bee happy!

The Honey Pavillion at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh. I worked here all day, moving from meet n greet to candle-making, education, honey tasting and finally, observation hive. A proper little worker bee! It was brilliant, if exhausting. Tomorrow I start on candle making duties, my favourite.

Needless to say, this is not me in the photo! 😁
