After coming back from a year of parental leave I didn't lose my job.
My previous project came to an end just before I went on parental leave and the company couldn't secure new projects locally.
But because I was involved ipartially in a different department before, that department secured a internal budget for me as a Subject Matter Expert.
Now I'm advising on that topic and was also brought in to a big internal project, so my job is secured for some time now.
For me it's extra difficult because I moved to a different country and have a really hard time learning the language, which is a must to get a different job here.
I've been focusing hard on my job, and received feedback from a C Suite Exec this week that he is impressed with my professionalism and interpersonal abilities, especially when meeting with other execs or company lawyers. He even has started coming directly to me because, quote, "Shit gets done when you're involved." This is huge to me because I'm impossibly awkward in social circles and mostly a shut-in neckbeard, but somehow it works for me at my job.
I also received recognition in the form of a beautiful glass plaque from the CEO this year, and it feels amazing.
I crawled my way up from homelessness to stability and now I'm rocking it at my job. Feels good man.
I know it's a bit taboo and perhaps unwise to put so much emphasis on your job, but it's what brings me happiness because I've struggled and fought to get to where I am now. My success has afforded me a comfortable upper-middle-class life and I'm still kind of shocked that it all came to fruition. Went from sleeping under the underpass to a penthouse condo in less than two decades.
There is no need to consider any of this taboo. We spend a very large chunk of our lives simply working to earn money to live. If what you're doing for work is something that makes you happy and proud to be spending time on, then that is worth some monetary value. At least, that's how I feel.
The company that lost my $3500 computer a month ago finally sent off a free replacement and it'll be here next week! Normally, they replace it with a refurbished one but since they don't have any, I'm getting a new one.
2ish weeks ago my parents met another couple at a cocktail party and found out they had a single daughter about my age. In an extremely unsubtle attempt to set us up our families did an escape room together.
Honestly, sex and dating have never been important to me. My longest relationship was a couple months long in high school, I went on maybe 3 or 4 dates in college. I went to this escape room thinking I’d make pleasantries for an hour, solve some puzzles and go home. But when I met her she was cute, and smart, and funny, and after we escaped she asked if I wanted to go with her to something else she was doing that day.
We ended up spending the whole day together. And again the next weekend. I haven’t “officially” asked her out, or kissed her, or really acknowledged anything about what this is. But I have had so much fun with this badass trapeze-flying, skydiving, engineering, competitive dancing, just-so-cool woman that I can’t stop thinking about when I’ll see her next.
Don’t wait, ask her out. Nothing is worse than an opportunity missed from procrastination, and some girls have short fuses when establishing a romantic foundation with someone.
Asking her out isn’t a binding commitment for a long relationship, but it does bookmark you as an interested party.
I got stoned in VRChat for the first time, not too long after getting my first VR headset. As a furry who's very interested in screwing with my sense of self, this was a really big deal to me in a way I can't easily explain.
My parents, in their 70s, started receiving a guaranteed income supplement (they're Canadian). They're still poor, but finally they can afford the basics of survival without having to work full time.
My employer offered me a modest severance package, and set my last day to be the first working day of the month, meaning my health care benefits are valid for almost a full month after my last day.
Tell me you're American without telling me you're American
I am traveling through Greece with my girlfriend. After a nice (and exhausting) hiking route we are back in the hotel – one of the best rooms I have ever been to. She is having a shower and I am chilling over the bed. At this very moment everything feels great.
I was just about to leave, put my shoes on, and that’s when I remembered that I needed to take out the trash. The good thing is, I remembered that before tying the laces.
Seems like I usually remember everything once the laces have been tied, but this time was different.
Also, setting a pretty low bar for good things, so that anyone can join the conversation. 😀
I did put in my two weeks, but I had nothing I was working on and I canceled my meetings, so now I'm still laying in bed instead of freezing my ass off in a cubicle :)
We switched my son's Pre-K for a number of reasons. Mostly because they didn't have room for him in the older class (where he belongs), but also because it was kinda trashy, kinda franchisee, and every day we dropped him off he was crying and clinging harder and harder. The new school is just some lady running something out of her house.
A friend asked him what he's thankful for last night and he said, "My new school" 😭😭
Apart from my mortgage, I'm finally debt free, and I'm running a surplus every month after all the bills are paid.
Well, except what we jokingly refer to as my "cripling gambling-induced credit card debt"; I returned some bottles while at the store the other day. The payout wasn't a lot, but enough to cover the mundane items I was buying. Instead of dealing with the bottle return receipt I pushed that button where it buys you a small lottery ticket instead and the money is donated to red cross. Not surprisingly, I didn't win. When at the checkout counter I realized that my GF still had my usual card after borrowing it earlier, so I had to use my credit card to pay the laughably small sum.
You essentially used your credit card to donate to the Red Cross. It's not a great financial decision, but it sounds like you can cover that. Nice work getting out of debt!
well i got myself a beautiful boyfriend and he sent me a letter,, and classes are going fine, very happy of course. and the place i live in has a big bright sun, which makes days happier!!
They're so cute!! My DIL doesn't want to see her family for Thanksgiving so we rented a house out of town for the weekend. It has llamas and I'm so excited to just sit and watch them. I hope i get to pet them!
He got offered a promotion where leaving, because he decided to leave.
That promotion was always available but only offered when was necessary. They likely were having that labor for free without the promotion and just riding on his goodwill.
That said now the decision is simpler, why would you like to stay where you were not valued for your quality of work?
Yeah the new job can be all kinds of different but is additional experience and OP indicates he loves the move.
To me, this is an easy one.
Didn't happen in my life, but in the life of a family member and that makes me very happy as well. My sister got a permanent job at a place she did an internship in last year. It's a job in her career, half the number of hours she is currently doing working at a spa, making more money, and it's a 90% remote role. She gets to be with her 8yo son, my nephew, almost all the time he is at home now. It also means my brother in law can take more hours at his job, thus overall getting to live more comfortably.
I just wrapped up a delightful trip with my bride of 20 something years and got a job offer for a different position in my company during the trip.
It was a practically perfect trip, but I'm also very excited to go home because I have 4 more days of vacation left and I can't wait go be reunited with my cats, and relax around the house for a few days.
The other day I made butter chicken and it was one of the best butter chickens I'd had, at least as good as restaurant quality. Can't wait to make it again and it was my 2nd try ever so I think I nailed it pretty quick. Wicked proud of that.
A "good" thing from a bad thing: my 6 year old computer monitor decided to croak today.
As it's currently black friday deals, I managed to order a new one fairly cheap-o.
If you can do stuff, literally just on the Thumbtack app lmfao landlords get on there when they need repairs done, so I do them and they pay whatever I want. I fleeced landlords to the tune of like $2000 last week, only worked 3 days.
Then when I get honest hardworking customers, I cut them a break. The landlords subsidize the regular people.
Went to visit my elderly aunt, she's the oldest one in our immediate family at this point. We went out to eat at a local pizza place too, Don't think I've ever been to a restaurant with her before
End of life hardware replacement at work. Deadline for the project is in a few weeks. Our engineering team just sent out a new BIOS upgrade for devices that get them up to TPM 2.0 which is the main requirement for the project. We went from ~5 completions a week to under one now to stay on track. Wasn't really too worried about it but it will make work a piece of cake for a little.
It really does lol. I wasn't too concerned about this project and have been focusing on the next phase plus a few other projects in the pipeline, but knowing this really helped. My mom is having surgery tomorrow so I'll have to take care of her for the next few days, plus my wife's car was throwing some nasty codes that had me stressed. At least now I know work is in a good place as I take a few days off to take care of my mom and tinker with a car.
Edit: If anyone has any tips for doing a piston soak on a KIA 1.6L engine please let me know. I am not the most mechanically inclined but can follow instructions from repair docs and YouTube videos. My friend who usually helps with my repairs is busy this weekend, but has confidence in me to do this after watching/helping him with DIY repairs over the years. Plus I can justify buying tools lol
Nah, it’s a low bar to clear. Was something good today? Could be small, tiny, infinitesimal, anything really. If things are bad today, but they were horrible before, that counts too.
oh things have been horrible. I think the cobra has fixed its eff up and we have insurance but it won't show on the portal for another day or two and we already had to cancel the near term appoinments. will see if I can get glasses this weekend.
