Risky Buisness
  • A cousin is taken as fair game in many countries, health risks in children are low. Better get tested first to make sure. Many cousins are not in close contact through their childhood, so they don't feel sibling-like wierdness.

  • Syrians take to the streets to celebrate Hassan Nasrallah’s death
  • That's a good approach. I tried to search for celebrations in 2024 to make it recent, because those things can change, but I didn't get enough relevant pictures to decide (most celebrations with obvious women were indoors). There would surely be other ways to find out what is the current women rghts situation in Syria (and it could also differ regionally, I expect). I won't be able to go down that rabbit hole today, though. If you happen to have more information, be sure to share, I'm genuinely interested.

  • I was talking about toxins in general in reaction to yout toxin comment. I think it's logical to research the possibility of alcohol having some beneficial effects, the world is not black and white.

When it comes to studies of health risks/benefits of alcohol, they unfortunately seem to suffer from the same shortcomings as other health studies: lots of important factors are often ignored, like the type of alcoholic beverage consumed, lifestyle connected to the type or amount of alcohol, previous history of alcohol use... I can, of course, give you a link to a study that finds benefits to moderate alcohol use (although they are far from recomending it). Here's one example from 2023

Personally, I think alcohol probably does more damage than benefit even in moderate dosing, but the truth is we still don't really know and we need much more in-depth studies to find out.

  • I like it too. There's no bad taste. There's only my taste or taste of the group I belong to (often interpreted as good) and the taste of the others, different from mine (usually interpreted as bad).

  • Yes, but in case of this kind of nutrition/health studies the correlation=/=causation is often a big problem. There are usually so many things at play and the studies just look at a tiny subsetof them, making the results irrelevant or just plain wrong. I think this field would benefit greatly from a more ecological approach - in ecology, scientists often use methods for multidimensional analysis of a big number of factors that can or do influence the studied problem. This is rarely seen in medicine and nutrition, unfortunately.

  • I didn't really understand the abstract, I'm affraid. Is CGA the same thing as chlorigenic acid and is that the antioxidant you're talking about? Also, did they test coffee with a little milk? The abstract makes it sound like they tested coffee without milk and coffee made entirely of milk, which doesn't happen in real life. I am confused.

  • Saru

I just started watching Discovery season 3. I was quite traumatized by the low quality of s02, but I decided to give season 3 a chance because I like most of the characters. Now comes the point. I do like Saru a lot nowadays, but at first I was put off a bit by his treatment of the tardigrade. Did any of you mind his lack of empathy for the animal? Or were you alright with him treating the creature as a resource without thinking twice? It feels kind of wrong to me when his own nation is treated as a resource on his home planet.

How do I return to the right page of Lemmy posts?

I'm using Firefox on an Android phone to view Lemmy. When I click a post at the second page of posts and go back after reading, it takes me to the first page of posts. Am I doing something wrong?

YSK you can easily escape the new post avalanche bug by viewing the 2nd page of posts

Why YSK: I use the web version of Lemmy both on desktop and mobile. By going directly to the 2nd page of posts, I get rid of both the neverending stream of new posts and of the same old posts that keep sticking to the 1st page. It works for all the filters: active, hot... No need to scroll down, just change the number in the end of the URL from 1 to 2 and save it to favourites or whatever.
