What do you think got way too much hate than it should've?
Funko Pops, to me.
I understand that some of them are fairly overpriced, but I also really like them as is. It doesn't work on all characters, but it sometimes work on a lot and there's so much representation and variety that it's good to have a few.
If people want to talk about waste of plastic and vinyl, they should bark at the companies who make teeny tiny figurines that serve no purpose and have so little detail that spending any money on them is a waste.
I loved the vibe, and the Newtonian (-esque?) space battles, but I kinda dropped off, and after the ending was spoiled for me I was like "Wow. Saved myself the time." Lol
But is the show worth it overall? I've liked things with silly/bad endings before. :p
Yes, it is still excellent even by today's standards, and you can see why so many new shows followed their big budget approach.
There are a couple small parts that can be a bit hard to get through, but for me that's just part of the situation they are in, and it is all totally worth it.
No matter what anyone thinks of the ending, it does at least have a conclusion. You are not left wondering or half expecting a sequel.
Starfield. The game isn't bad, it just isn't as good and the game design was especially outdated for its release window. It's legitimately a better RPG than most Bethesda games.
I'm fairly confident modders will actually be able to salvage it despite its flaws.
Seconded. I actually enjoyed the game for what it was, almost Skyrim in space. Almost, don’t shoot me for saying that.
I had fun with the various factions, with constellation, and the story was reasonably unique but maybe not extremely enthralling.
That said, my expectations were basically zero. I purposefully ignore all prerelease hype about video games as it tends to ruin the actual experience of playing the game for the first time.
I enjoyed the basic formula of past Bethesda games and Starfield delivered more of the same plus some cool extras like being able to disable and board/capture spaceships. I don't understand the sentiment that's it's outdated. Modern AAA games are not dramatically different in design to games from 10 years ago in my experience.
I'd be less annoyed with it if it were bad. It's just the most boring thing. There's nothing interesting going on. If it were bad there'd be a reason to care about it.
It's just really annoying because Bethesda used to care about doing something interesting with their games. It's just increasingly gotten more generic though, and Starfield is the worst of it.
I... I don't think of these at all, I just ignore their existence.
Personally, hating on people who post things on social media that are slightly offensive to others get more hate than they should. We should reach out and try to explain the issue in a civil matter instead of just loosing it because that doesn't make us any better. And if the person doesn't want to understand or care, just ignore them and move on.
Hating on products because either are bad, or underwhelming is ok as these companies know this and clearly don't care because they are already making money off it. However this is only recent due to all the Enshittrification we are getting force fed by these same companies.
That title isn't getting as much hate as it deserves.
It's either "What do you think got way too much hate?" or "What do you think got way more hate than it should've?". You somehow combined those sentences into a grammatically broken mess.
And it's fucked up that this hasn't been pointed out and isn't one of the top comments.
It hasn't been pointed out and isn't one of the top comments because nobody fucking cares.
You are the epitome of 🤓
Edit for people getting mad about this: The content of OP's post is perfectly coherent, so it's not like they're daft and don't know better. The title was a mistake, we're human, we make them. Even if OP didn't know better, one could just as easily assume that they aren't a native speaker and politely correct it without being a complete dick about it like the comment above.
But ultimately, who the fuck really cares? The notion that it's 'fucked up' that people aren't dogpiling on someone for making a grammatical error on Lemmy is fucking stupid.
For whatever reason, we've decided as a society that women wearing wigs/weaves/extensions to make themselves feel attractive and nice is perfectly normal, but if a man does it it's laughable and pathetic. I say, wigs for anyone who wants them!
Also before the accusations start, I'm not a bald dude lol.
Real talk - as a balding dude, there was a time when I was part of a bonus structure program, and I half-jokingly started looking at hair systems. Not because I'm balding and ashamed of it, whatever, but I missed being able to style my hair in a way that looked good. That, and I loved the idea of showing up to work with a whole head of hair, refusing to acknowledge it aside from saying I got a haircut. 'Cause that shit would've been hilarious.
Ultimately decided against it, too much $ for vanity and a joke versus sensible balding guy haircuts/the occasional clear cut.
Get one and (after you tire of that excellent joke) swap it on/off and hide it when people have their back turned like Igor's hump switching in Young Frankenstein.
Cyberpunk 2077 - it was overhyped as fuck but as someone who ignores the bullshit grind mill of video game journalism it was a decent game on release that became pretty fucking awesome after patches and the expansion.
Yeah I think once games reach a certain level of hype there's almost no way to release them without getting a big backlash. People (IE gamers) tend to build these things up way too much in their minds and go in with really unrealistic expectations.
I thought it was great on release. Bugs were mostly easy to work around or beneficial and didn't stop me from completing the game. I stumbled onto a bug that was basically infinite money and unlocked all the cars and motorcycles before it was quickly patched. Also a way to terrain glitch the psychos and beat them when I should've have been strong enough. Cruising through content when you feel like you're breaking the world like Neo dropped into a William Gibson novel is exactly what I wanted from a cyberpunk game.
For me it just crashed often enough that it was frustrating to keep redoing things and one side quest got stuck because an enemy was half dead in the floor and I couldn't finish them.
I let the game rest and played it a year later, it was great then. Half a year later I played it a second time, with different gender, weapons focus, and starting background. It was great again :-)
Same with anything. I didn't see the Barbie hype, went in an watched it and thought it was good. Same with the Wakanda film. Didn't see any of the hype and had a great time.
Yeah. I feel like they get so much hate because they are the closest symbol for "maybe things aren't as clear cut as you thought", and it freaks people out.
I think also some people who feel like they can't be as openly homophobic as they used to be in the 80s/90s/2000s have just transferred their bigotry onto trans people instead because they think they can get away with it.
Edit: it's... sadly very easy to forget that you don't deserve the hate, which is why I didn't put this in my post. It's something I've been trying to work through lately.
The reason they're being hated is entirely for religious reasons. Just like any other individual from the LGBTQ umbrella are scorned similarly.
But I have to play devil's advocate now that I'm thinking of it, but one thing I don't like about trans people, isn't just who they are. It's the spotlight is primarily on them, by a community that had once stressed about caring about all individuals of all backgrounds. Yet, Trans people got all the attention almost and what that has caused is levels of infighting and people giving cold shoulders. They're from people who're gay or bisexual (which these days, bisexual people feel shunned the most).
That's not what should happen but unfortunately, it is and I don't like that people just suddenly decide who gets more priority over others. That's not equality.
That's not being a devils advocate, it's just plain transphobia. As if trans people somehow have the power social power to choose the worlds attention.
You say hate is for religious reasons, and then blame the victims of that hate for the attention they're getting from their oppressors, the very people you yourself just said are responsible for it.
And honest opinion or not, you chose to spend your energy undermining a trans person talking about our oppression, when you could simply have chosen to not do that. And that shit is creating the very problem you just blamed trans people for
Imo they aren't getting nearly enough of hate they deserve. I'm not against figure collecting in general but FP are the ugliest motherfucking thing i ever seen in this department, for the same amount of resources, labour and energy they could produce something much better. In fact, a consistent long serie of figures faithful to the original (not ultra-deformed) across so many franchises would been great, but alas only thing there is are those unholy abominations.
Yes, but english language call "art" literally everything made with even a slightest hint of intention, which those things had to be because there is no other purpose (except lining the pockets of publishing mafia).
I also take issue with buying something that does nothing. “Oh I’m going to put this on that shelf and never touch it again”. It screams cash grab. They’re made of brittle plastic so you can’t play with them. And as you say, they’re ugly.
I would argue that collecting things having purely aesthetical value is also legit, though there is an issue about manufactured demand and role of merchandise in popculture, but fair enough.
Microwaving food. Too many people think that it's radiating the food. Its just making the water molecules in the food wiggle and heat up to warm the food through internal collisions.
The heating effect is more due to standing waves rotating the (polar) water molecules in the food.
There aren't hot radiation particles moving into and staying in the food like a number of people believe.
Microwaves (and 5G) have much less energy than visible light, but its a scary sound word. People don't like to think that they are exposed to radiation 100% of the time.
I don't like it, but that's because it's usually the faster but inferior quality option, bread/bun gets hard, sometimes uneven heating, some things get slimy, etc. I opt for toaster oven or range/pot/pan over microwave 9/10 times just because I have the extra 10-20min and prefer the quality. Radiation (for me) has nothing to do with it.
That's a fair call and I'm the same, its not optimal for a lot reheating. I've met a fair few people who refuse to own or use a microwave because the don't want their food "irradiated" or think that it is somehow unhealthy.
Waterworld is a fantastic movie. Creative world-building, unbelievable sets, stunts and performances (Dennis Hoper as an over the top villain? Yes please) I just can't understand all of the hate it received!
it was bad for the studio. its production budget ballooned to $175M, total cost $235M. the most expensive movie ever made at the time. it lost money at the box office.
Nickelback. Hate started as a joke but became real. Not like they're groundbreaking, but they don't deserve the amount of actual hate they got.
Also Korn's dubstep album. Not every song was a hit, but there were quite a few bangers on that track list. Get Up got me into dubstep and still goes hard.
The worst that Nickelback is, is that they're just vanilla and bland. But they're also a band that has at least maybe a single or two songs that you might like. I really dig the Feed the Machine track from them and a few others.
They have 2 or 3 songs that I consider to be fantastic, but a lot of generic stuff. Photograph is their worst song and was so overplayed when it came out.
Also Korn's dubstep album. Not every song was a hit, but there were quite a few bangers on that track list. Get Up got me into dubstep and still goes hard.
I just listened to it again, and it is definitely not as good as I remember it being. I was a fan of it, but I can definitely see how fans of either Korn or dupstep would have disliked it. "Get Up!" in particular is still just as good as I remember, though!
Mass Effect Andromeda. The hate was so intense it caused the publisher to disavow the series entirely.
The hate was because people were comparing Andromeda (the start of a new trilogy) with the entirety of the first trilogy. People were upset that Andromeda wasn’t grander in scale than all three former games combined. The gameplay was fine, and it was clear that they were trying to build the story up just like they had done with the original trilogy. There were several DLC chapters planned, and it was going to grow into an entire series of its own.
It’s like people forgot that the original trilogy spent an entire game just introducing the main villain. Like you didn’t even realize who the main villain for the trilogy was until the very end of the game. But when Andromeda did something similar, people got baby-mad about it.
The hate was so intense it caused the publisher to disavow the series entirely.
The game wasn't exactly flop money-wise, it sold about what they predicted it would and at least one big DLC was heavily hinted in the game itself. What really killed it is the fucking 2018-2020 era in computer gaming when multiplayer shooters propagated like crazy and idiot doomsayers and other marketing "experts" prophecised end of not only RPG genre but single player games in general, for example Bioware was ordered to drop everything and make the Anthem trash.
Agree with placing Andromeda here though. That game did had some glaring design flaws (like ship and vehicle being unarmed and alien having just few different faces) but overall it wasn't nearly that bad as haters say.
I think it wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't a great Mass Effect game. If it had released as it's own stand-alone thing and had been marketed a bit less grandly I think it would have been a lot better received.
Oh, it had some bugs for sure. It was rushed out the door by the publisher. But again, if given time to actually work on it, it had potential to become a new trilogy. The story was clearly trying to do something, even if it was mired by bugs.
Windows Phone, particularly Windows Phone 8.1. It had its flaws, the biggest being the lack of third-party support of course but the UX was the best I've ever experienced on a mobile device.
The UI was very different from Android/iOS but felt more consistent and intuitive. The Live Tiles especially were just such a good feature to get as much information as possible on one screen. And it all looked so incredibly good for the time with its silky smooth animations.
It's a shame Microsoft ruined it all with Windows Phone 10...
I legitimately miss my lumia 1020, I really liked the way that applications "flowed" as well, entire ui was really intuitive, maybe partly because I had a zune with the touch pad for years before getting a wp7, zune was another solid but memed on device.
Oh I wish I had a Zune HD, it's exactly my kinda thing; quirky, niche and pretty much failed. I loved the interface of that old Zune media player that was available for Windows 7, used that for quite a while before switching to Foobar2k.
Nokia Mix Radio was amazing as well, used that all the time on my Lumia 930.
Also the keyboard! I have never used one I liked more until thumbkey came along :) The windows keyboard was so good for swipe typing, it makes me wonder how they now own swift key and it isn't as good!
When I had to go to Android (phone battery on the Lumia 950xl started swelling), I used things to replicate Windows Phone as it was so fun to use. :)
my opinion is that people who push for it havent lived in it. everything is lowest common denominator, if you can even get it. no incentive to invent, no reward for innovation.
Can you explain what you mean by "lowest common denominator" as well as the bits on "no incentives or rewards for innovation?" The USSR was one of the mosy scientifically advanced countries in the 20th century.
You live in a fantasy invented by your own propaganda. I don't even know how you'd measure what you're saying at a mass scale, much less notice it while living in a country.
"Oh man, if we were in a capitalist country, Jim would have invented a new form of sliced bread, but alas we are unmotivated by our available housing and food."
The Pontiac Aztek. It had awesome features I'd love to have in my car today. Tailgate with molded seats and cup holders. Speakers facing out of the back. A cooler. Foldable and removable rear seating. MP3 cd player from the factory.
Also, Funko Pops deserve more hate than they get. But I don't like figures of any kind, I collect staplers.
Crocs. I got my first pair when I was a teenager and they still work now (edit: 30yrs old); though I recently got a new pair because the bottoms were completely smooth on the old pair.
"Ugly" cars. Aka Pontiac Aztec, PT Cruiser, Fiat Multipla, etc. Yeah, they might be ugly as sin, but they're more interesting from a visual standpoint. I'd rather have the road filled with ugly cars than filled with cars that mostly look the same.
Everything from Chrysler is junk. I worked for several dealers and general used car lots with my auto body shop business. Everything dodge/chrysler/plymouth was cut rate junk since the late 70's and still is. At wholesale auctions, they are the joke cars people only bid on because they are so damn cheap it justifies playing roulette. Everything goes wrong with them.
Like here we are nearly 20 years since I painted and I still remember there is a champagne/charcoal/silver metallic paint that came on Dodge/Chryslers. The color code was 4Q2. There were more unrelated variations under that color code than almost any other at the time. The only one I encountered that was worse was the charcoal metallic used on Chevy/GMC trucks and suburbans. That one has tone variability between yellow, red, and blue where getting it wrong meant remixing the color coat. With 4Q2 it was metallic grain size, tone between blue and yellow, and the flop characteristics (apparent color tone and clarity when viewed from an oblique angle).
I remember many times thinking to myself that someone knew, if you have not figured it out, say "4Q2" out loud and fast... It was freaking personal, all those times I struggled with that color. Those cars were the dead inventory that was ever present on many lots I worked for, and they sat at the mechanics bays for much longer than any of the rest.
Are they, though? They're just Dodge Neons under the hood. And there were a ton of pt cruisers. I still see them now, 20 something years later. People seemed to take care of them and pass them onto their kids as they got older.
For me they just popped out of nowhere and everyone started wearing them all of a sudden which I found it weird. I am yet to own crocs myself. Not that I hate them, nor I am trying to avoid them, I just found them as weird.
Many got over the hate and now appreciate them. They are also common addons for overnight hiking/bikepacking trips for when you set up camp and your feet are tired.
TBF I think Hilton was deliberate to some extent. She rode the wave of controversy she created and made a name for herself separate from the family name. She’s still controversial, but she’s independent.
Lohan was just an addict in a downward spiral chased by harsh public opinion. Unfortunately the public loves to see a star fall.
It's a "collectible" piece of plastic that looks like a fat chibi, square headed version of some tired character from pop culture. The only people that own them are psychic vampires.
Babylon 5, that show was brilliant and I don't get why it gets the hate it does, if you love space courtroom drama and intergalactic diplomatic shenanigans, then Babylon 5 has you more than covered.
You want a deep multi level story? Yep got that.
Space racisim? Got that as well.
A will they won't they love hate relationship between to opposing alien species who may or may not have killed a substantial amount of each others species? hell yeah we got that in bulk!
That show is worth the watch. If they had just the slightest bit of extra money to get better cgi, we would be talking about Babylon 5 different.
I agree with you as a contemporary but I do think it's important to remember that while DS9 started slower it ended up delivering excellent narratives on the same topic.
They are both worth a watch though because Bab5 had a grittiness to it that most other sci-fi wouldn't embrace until the resurgence of Cyberpunk. Bab5 contains several love letters to Gibson buried in its themeing that even DS9 (the grittiest of Star Treks) didn't come close to matching.
The first season is a little rough; at first it feels like an inferior Star Trek ripoff, a lot of adventures of the week, the effects and sets are cheesy even by Trek standards, the acting is a little stilted as some of the actors are still finding their strides.
Just before season 2 it gets its shit together and gets GOOD. I'm going to accuse it of having some of the best character arcs ever committed to video tape and some details that are going to make you say "They wrote this in 1996. How did they write this in 1996? How did they know?" upon viewing today.
I think most of the hate came from the people who grew up with the 2003 show, which ended abruptly, leading them to believe that TTG was meant to be a replacement.
Most of the hate has died down now, but I still think all that contempt was unwarranted.
Ty! It was so good. I was so disappointed when it got just shit on by the fan base. I was never huge into anime, but I did watch the original, and thought the live action was really good and faithful where it counted.
Buying music as CDs. Sure they were expensive at their peak, but they came in high quality, I could rip and do with them as I wished, while still having an offline copy. I have a lot of my old ones from childhood
I was surprised when I learned that Pikmin 3 is often disliked or even hated. It's shamelessly my fave game of the series. I get that the story is shorter than it should be and it's more linear but it has this charm that's unmatched, and I enjoy the graphics style so much that it inspired several facets of my artstyle even. Also the mission mode is just the right difficulty and a ton of fun!
Their music algorithm has been better to me than any of the others. And the amount of educational videos I end up watching far exceeds what I would have found on any other streaming platform.
They bit off way more than they could chew with the new game and it shows. Now, it has some good ideas that I'm happy for implemented, like upgradable buildings and base resource extraction. However, I feel like this has been part of Paradox Plaza's problem in not having a clear design vision that has been fully vetted before going into production.
I'm sure the game could end up like Stellaris where the game is rewritten in a way to make it fun, but that is going to take some time.
Yeah. I'm a huge ghostbusters nerd. I really enjoyed it. There's one quick change that could be made that would have made it tons better. Set it in Boston and make them a franchisee. Making it a spinoff instead of a reboot.
If that movie had not come out in 2016, it might've been somewhat okay. The problem also is that they picked the most unfunny female comedians that they could find. But because it came out in 2016, it was criticized for being "woke".
The Berkeley professor jam.
It has a lot of really cool elements. Most of it is really good. Everything is just all at the same time in the clip which is... Challenging to listen to.
