The only time I've had an ad on YouTube with premium(on their site) is when I went in to invisible mode.
In my opinion it's absolutely stupid that invisible mode has the capability of detecting that you have an account because it skips the age verification blocker on content-sensitive videos, but it gives ads to people with premium. It's obviously able to see that you have a YouTube account so therefore it should be able to just do the next step of saying okay does this account have premium. The only thing people are asking for was it to not log the videos they're watching but they had to make it some Next Generation NASA level secret hidden profile shit that doesn't actually do anything.
Also it really bugs me that they've added ads for YouTube and beds on discord. If I have my YouTube account linked to my Discord account I should not receive ads on the in bed. It should be able to see my YouTube account via electrons cookie system and be able to link it to an account that has premium.
If I'm paying monthly for a service without ads and I see a single (1) advertisement, I should at least get a month of free subscription because the other party is in breach of contract.
If Premium Lite was like described in the article, just ad free YouTube without other features like YouTube Music, but for half the price, then it would actually be a good deal
But since the user is getting ads it seems like something else
Imagine not using NewPipe, which has no ads and can play music in the background while you use other apps simultaneously (Samsung only feature I've heard, but still)
I haven't watched a single Ad on YouTube on TV (SmartTube), mobile (ReVanced), or PC (Firefox + uBlock origin) since it became unbearable... five years ago or so?
SmartTube for TV and ReVanced/uYouPlus for Andriod/IOS devices. SmartTube can be tricky to set up depending on the TV, but the mobile apps are relatively simple to get working.
This is why you get anti-anti-adblock userscripts in tampermonkey inside of your browser and/or the same inside of adguard for windows. Along with an adblocking DNS
Give them an inch and they'll take 1000 miles. No more money for google, ever.
I have premium too once I saw an ad and complained and it turned out to be a bug. I even had engineers reach out with questions when they were fixing the issue.
Maybe that has happened here? They have announced any changes.
Sideload the uYou+Extras app on your iPhone and then just use AirPlay to watch youtube videos on apple TV. Gets around adverts 99% of the time. Sometimes one will slip through, just close the video and reopen it and it’ll not have an advert anymore.
You can, but I like using an app, because for example I can use pip with grayjay (watch video while doing something else), I'm not sure if that is possible with firefox + ublock
At least for me it doesn't keep autoplaying videos/going to next video on Youtube (probably a setting I could change somewhere). Grayjay is pretty handy for other media platforms as well.
Web: Firefox (or any firefox fork on apple tech you can use safari + adguard) with Ublock origin + libreredirect. The yt frontend sites: Invidious,Piped(broken at this time),Poketube (my personal favorite)
Mobile (Android and Ios): Yattee(The only ios client, broken can only stream local downloaded content or from Poketube servers.),Clipious (invidious client built with flutter),Libretube(Piped, broken at this time),Grayjay (source available not strictly youtube client),Vlc media player (Ios and android not strictly a yt client it can play downloaded videos or stream from poketube servers),Tubular(Newpipe with sponsor block and return youtube dislike not strictly a yt client you can use regular newpipe aswell.),Freetube(unofficial).
PC(Linux,Windows and Macos): Plasmatube, (fits well with kde plasma a little to quiet),QTube(Yt client built with qt,Embeds yts site),Freetube (if your fine with Electron which is using chromium),Vlc media player (said above).
My premium is about to run out, and I had solutions for both my TV and phone via my TV's homebrew store and ReVanced. Didn't know that Brave just completely shut down ads on iPad, though. Amazing tip, thanks a bunch!
YouTube ads cost about $0.026 (two and a half cents) per 30 seconds of viewing. This is called cpv.
It's not fair that ss a viewer I'm not able to bid on my own to show myself an empty ad slot. I'm looking at the price of premium and it definitely seems like more revenue for YouTube than I'd give them from ads.
did not know that, thanks.
well, the biggest plus for me on brave was the background play option. any other browsers you recommend instead of it that has this feature?
Thanks, I'm still grandfathered in at the beta price, but I mainly use it for discovering music to add to my Plex collection. The free YouTube is a bonus for me.
I know it's temporary, I'll probably cancel when Im asked to pay full price
For everyone on Android, you can just patch the youtube app using ReVanced, which will remove ads, add sponsorblock, allow you to hide shorts and the "People also watched" sections. It can be pretty tricky to patch if you don't know what you're doing so feel free to tell me if you run into any issues.
If you don't care about the algorithm and your feed, you can get the third-party client NewPipe, it's FOSS but sometimes crashes while reading some videos It does not seem to crash anymore, so good thing!
Strange, I've had a video that crashed newpipe every time but now it seems to play fine. Maybe because it was a "Coming soon" video?
Anyways it seems like it works fine now, I also had a bug where leaving the app would crash the app instead of doing background play but I also can't get it to occur again. I'll edit my original comment.
If it’s true and I get ads on my Premium (which.. to be fair I’m not paying full price anyway 😅), it may be the last push I needed to finally start reading books again..
Hey, so I canceled my YouTube Premium subscription a couple of months back and decided to pick up reading instead. It's a different kind of entertainment, but I'm actually really enjoying it. I've been finding some really great books, and I'm finding it just as hard to put them down as I used to find it hard to stop binge-watching my favorite channels.
Less is sometimes more honestly. Its likely you've got so much running that they're fighting each other. See if you've got overlapping features and remove as many as possible while still keeping the same functionality.
A few years ago I got this experience on mobile and posted about it on r/assholedesign, but it was autoremoved as a banned repost even though I didn't see anything like it. Yet another ban happy subreddit, I'm glad to be out of that place. This is truly awful though, and why I'm happy to use revanced.
lol here we are, just after a few weeks when people were defending how yt premium was the best subscription plan ever on Lemmy. people deserve to be scammed like this tbh
