We will not. Lemmy is far too inaccessible for an average user. I would say multiple servers would throw them off, but they won't get that far. They will give up the moment they see there is no "Lemmy" on google play, but multiple launchers you can use.
I spent an hour last night interacting with and outing ruzzian trolls on Reddit. There was no doubt these were ruzzians, because after a couple of tit-for-tat comments, they use terms like "we" when talking about ruzzias invasion of Ukraine. They all knew what Yandex was without asking or querying it, as a non ruzzian would. In some comments I explained why ruzzia is a third world shithole country, because I've been there. I told a couple to go dig babushka a fresh latrine pit, and a couple others how good they'd look fertilizing sunflowers in Kursk
Woke up today, and I've been permanently banned "for inciting violence".
Reddit is a hive full of ruzzian trolls and bots, and the moderators appear to support them.
I don't think I'll bother creating another account lol.
You're probably right, but I felt that by exposing them maybe some other more gullible people wouldn't absorb their views. Too many people can't think very well for themselves and just regurgitate what they've heard, so calling out liars has some value. I hope.
After the election but most notably after inauguration they started to creep out everywhere, especially into local subs. r/Seattle suddenly had weird narratives being pushed. They did usually get downvoted to hell though and the sub mods have mostly been keeping a handle on it.
Today i saw a deleted comment in a post titled “trump says he will label violence on tesla dealerships as domestic terrorism” and someone quoted it to express their shock that the comment was deleted. It was “elon and the orange dictator need to be removed from the board” and on top of that people are getting moderated messages warning them that they are liking content related to Luigi mangione. And they are even deleting people’s comments that mention the name luigi mangione.
We are in a full fledged fascist authoritarian police state. The only way to remedy it is a revolution. The system is under complete corporate control and has shown that it will not allow self remediation through its own mechanisms. Like the Princeton study proved the amount of influence one has upon legislated policy is directly correlated with the amount of wealth you have with regular working class people having a statistically irrelevant near zero impact on policy regardless how popular or unpopular the policy may be. This is the reality. There is no way forward that isn’t uncomfortable. And those who believe they are too comfortable to risk what they have need to really examine their reality and see if it truly is comfortable or just a meaningless existence of repetitive wage slavery with basically no autonomy or meaning within such an existence. And at the rate the working class habe lost what little we had that was worth working for in the last 5/6 decades how much more will be lost in the future decades and at that point how can you even believe your children will have any semblance of a life worth working and living for? Something needs to be done now before it is too late which it unfortunately may already be. The internet which was supposed to revolutionize human connection and the spread of ideas and information has been weaponized against us to the benefit of the ruling class and something needs to be done to counteract this. The fact that it was easier for people to mobilize and effect change before the magic glowing screens disseminating propaganda becoming so widely available says all we need to know. There is still hope but thst possibility is dwindling faster by the day. But those saying that the answer is to get out and vote and advocating for ballot box socialism/ ballot box progress are deuded and misinformed.
To be fair I would say a mass-orchestrated event of committing arson and destruction of private property across the nation should be classified as domestic terrorism.. if you remove politics from the equation, it's still terrorism.
What put me off Reddit was my perception that most of the very active users are toxic. Some of the users seem to enjoy bashing everything and anything that they slightly disagreed with and it has reached it's tipping point for me. It seems to me that they are exceptionally lacking in personal development and critical thinking and it ruins what makes the platform great. I'm hoping this platform doesn't end up like Reddit.
Totally. I just said yesterday, that r/europe and r/buyfromeu are the only subreddits, who are actually friendly right now and don’t lynch you for stating a non-threatening opinion.
I absolutely agree that honestly most people on reddit are toxic, but I would extend that to twitter/x as well. What I think part of the problem is that they're probably normalish people in real life, and let out some of their frustrations from real life they turn into literal trolls (not just the internet slang). I don't know what to do with that information other than interactions on reddit and x are a lot less meaningful than one would assume since it's all mainly fabricated ragebait
Same here, but the bots don't even tell you the "wrongthink" post that you upvoted so you have no idea how to avoid upvotes that will flag your account with a warning/ban. It's fucking psychotic on reddit now. Like watching the Titanic sink at this point.
digg could not be coming back at a better time. I honestly hope that it's basically just reddit but with a better UI and not as many shitty rules. Going public ruined that fucking website and I always knew it the moment they started charging an obscene amount of money to use their API
I can't wait for digg to finally come out, I hope it becomes basically a better, private, version of reddit, but you know, good. Lemmy is good too for now but I'm not exactly a huge fan of the UI, and not enough people are moving over yet. Again, probably cuz the UI is a little hard to figure out the first time.
Not the whole site but I got banned from World News a month or so ago for making a Luigi related Mario Brothers joke.
Such a joke. I am not even remotely a small time Reddit user either, been there for like 15 years and probably have over a million Karma across 3-4 accounts.
Hello folks! Found out I was banned this morning and spent all day trying to figure out an alternative. All for liking a post that said Trump raped a girl. Oh well. He did rape a girl so wtf?
Same here! My second 7-day site-wide suspension, I'm guessing ban next. I got flagged with warnings for upvoting something related to Luigi as "violating the rules by upvoting hate posts." It's like fucking 1984 over there now.
seems the added increase "luigi" and increase the amount of ban/purges going on. i was banned before they labeled LUIGI as a dirty word. i think its going to get worst and worst til theres only MSM only content on the site(that you can comment on)
This is wild. When it happened to me, I thought I had just inadvertently crossed the line (and was surprised it had taken me more than ten years to do so). But now I see it's a whole thing. I guess Reddit is officially enshittified.
I went out with a bang. Coincidentally, implying that such things should happen to the Muskrat and pedophile dictator too.
The latter getting a golden pager from Netty the Butcher was my highlight snark. And telling off the idiots at LSC was a good bit of satisfaction for myself.
I miss being able to interact with certain smaller subreddits for particular interests, but that's about it.
I genuinely don't know if there'd be enough of a following to see an active Blakes 7 group over here. That's my biggest loss tbh.
I'm on my 2nd 7-day site-wide suspension on this new account as of today. Had two older accounts permbanned. Then I recently got an automod to tell me my account was flagged for upvoting "hateful content" likely related to me upvoting Luigi posts. Reddit is fully unhinged at this point, what a cesspool.
is there a video on youtube explaining how lemmy works? I've heard of instances before and I'm sure you could just explain it in a comment but it would be nice to just see a video going over the UI and where reddit equivalents for stuff are
Permabanned after nearly 12 years. Forgive me for hating Nazi's. I'd made the statement fuck all Nazi's but six several times but this time was this time I got automod flagged. They are pretty much flagging the word Nazi regardless of context or overall statements made. The same goes for the word Luigi. Also, Karma is basically useless considering downvoting too much can also lead to a ban. It is pretty ridiculous. I'd never been banned once for any reason except for the last 6 months where I've been sub banned or gotten 3-7 day bans several times for making points about the sorry state of affairs in America lately. Forgive me for not bowing to kiss the fascist MAGA ring. Reddit has really put profits over people this time with these stupid rules and no real care in reading appeals or looking at context during moderation. It is all for their bottom line and oligarch investors now.
you can get flagged or astroturfed for calling out people trying to sanewash nazis, usually its the statement"You should not call everyone a nazi you disagree with" type of post.
Yep. The whataboutism and trying to play the both sides are wrong shit is so old. Sure, the Democrats are gutless, can't get their point across, and have no real power or momentum right now, but to try and argue that they are as bad as the conservatives is complete nonsense.
Yeah, I've said fuck all Nazis but six or kill all Nazis but six a hundred times on there, but this time was a bridge too far apparently. I really don't care if they think it is violent. They'll get theirs eventually I guess if history is a cyclical as it seems. Just gonna keep on trucking and spreading the word when I can, but it sure as shit ain't going to be on Reddit. I think I'm getting too old, grizzled, and cynical for any form of social media anymore anyways. It's all just so.... fake. Reddit was the last bastion for me. I probably won't be that prolific on here, but we'll see.
It's why I'm here. 12 year member, nearly a million in karma, perma-banned for repeating a statement I'd made many times in the past with no repercussions. The first time I repeated it after HitlerPig stole the election, I was fully banned.
It's happening because Ohanion wants to buy TikTok, and he knows HitlerPig will be personally making the decision, based on who smooched his ass the most, and who paid the biggest bribe. So as a show of good faith, he's volunteering to make Reddit a member of the Conservative Propaganda Machine.
The sweet irony of this is that digg.com is coming back. I'm on the early subscription list for when they finally release it. There's going to be a point in time where reddit is just 80% bots talking to each other, I bet.
I was surprised by the amount of people that went back. Or went back and stayed. Especially considering the welcome message. That shit was insultingly disgusting.
I haven't been full banned yet but have grown tired of the amazing levels of stupidity. I caught a temp ban for incivility for writing "Your mother should have gone through with her Planned Parenthood appointment."
Tbh you can catch bans for that here but beauty of fediverse is that power tripping mods have limited ability to ban you fedi wide so freedom enjoyer's just go do their discourse on other sub's and servers
Most people agree punching nazis is fine, very few people agree on who is and isn't a nazi.
It is precisely because useful clueless idiots are constantly being classified as nazis that no one is taking accusations of actual nazis seriously. Within society the meaning of the word has degraded to "mean people I don't like".
Within society the meaning of the word has degraded to “mean people I don’t like”.
I've been hearing this for years, and yet, literal neo-nazis are running the us government now.
But go ahead and keep using the anti-woke rhetoric lol.
what a cop out. there's no functional difference between an idiot that works to advance nazi ideologies and the same but they have a swastika tattoo on their neck. to resist fascism means to confront ALL fascists. it's not about disagreement or people you dont like, most people are using ur-fascism as their default definition and umberto eco has a fucking 14 point checklist we're using. to act like it's so arbitrary is completely out of touch.
Nazis thrive on diluting language—twisting words like "freedom" and "patriotism" to serve their agenda. Ironically, the same thing happens when "Nazi" gets thrown around carelessly. Mislabeling people weakens the term, but so does refusing to acknowledge real extremists. Precision matters—both in calling out threats and in resisting linguistic manipulation.
Just made an account here ten minutes ago. The format feels weird but it’s nice to be able to continue talking like sensible people without getting banned for it. Feels good, man.
Happy you could join! You'll find that not only are bans much more reasonable, but conversations are frequently downright pleasant. Aditionally, there are communities built just for calling out mods that abuse power or are heavily biased. The system here is working much better from a user perspective.
The Voyager app is almost exactly like Apollo was before Reddit shut it down. There are others you can try out too and Lemmy will look and function however you want it to.
If it's any help, I use the sync app on android. I also used sync for reddit prior to the API thing which finally made me leave, so my experience is pretty much the same in terms of format. I agree it can feel weird in a browser but there's a bunch of good mobile apps that might feel more familiar.
Redirects queries for "reddit.com" in your url bar towards your own computer. And unless you literally are reddit, you won't reply to yourself, the result being that you've blocked the website for yourself.
EDIT: I prefer to use 0.0.0.0 instead, so I'll continue to ignore myself even if I do become Reddit in the future. Gotta be cautious.
Facts, it's already happening when most of the perfectly fine comments are collapsed in any interesting topic. Like yesterday when twitter was down. Every comment under the top level memes were collapsed so you have to click the + in front of it and get bored quickly and just give up. Same today with Musk post about being all weird about his empire.
Mods remove a post from /r/worldnews about Musk pushing for the US to leave NATO because it’s “not the appropriate subreddit”…? Excuse me, what the fuck???
[email protected] is still very popular but I saw the writing on the wall and jumped to make an alt [email protected] because people had gripes with the Midwest admin and I wanted to prevent an inevitable Lemmy.world alternative from appearing.
And now we happily co-exist. Theirs tends to focus more on the political while I like to also post the more mundane, slice-of-life, articles
I'm using Boost for Reddit and Boost for Lemmy. The Boost for Reddit app requires several patches to keep working though, which makes it inaccessible for most people.
Basically yes. The alternatives passively become better simply because of the mainstream option becoming worse over time.
I think it's still going too slowly in general but I'm not complaining, better slow than not at all.
Linux isn't just getting better in comparison because Windows got worse.
Linux is so much better now than just 10 years ago, it's absolutely incredible.
Better slow than too fast too. Lemmy feels like a nice fairly small community. I'm not sure that'll continue once it's the size of Reddit. We'll get more content and niche communities will be better served though, so there's pros and cons.
Not quite... It's easiest to game on Windows still. I'd love to move to Linux, though. But, alas, this year is not your year still. Crucify me if you wish, but this is the truth. So say a simple gamer that knows more than you do if you're peddling Linux as the best option in early 2025.
I've switched to main linux last week, for now with a windows dualboot for games that have issues. Honestly a good option if you just don't like windows or where it's heading. Depending on what you play going 100% linux isn't viable though (but also if you're not playing any multiplayer games it is).
Rebooting is so fast these days that switching OS isn't a big problem, and I'm surprised just how well proton is working. I've somehow had more problems with the EA launcher trying to play nfs unbound on windows than on linux (it just worked with no issues, on windows it wouldn't launch if I don't close the ea launcher first).
What have you been trying to run? I am honestly baffled at the linux gaming possibilities, even outside of Steam.
I mean even Star Citizen "runs" on linux. (lol)
Having not been using this place as regularly for the last couple of weeks, it definitely looks like there's more upvotes on posts now in general compared to when I started up here about two months ago. Even just before this latest Reddit fuck up, it looks a lot to me like there's been a steady influx lately. Like suddenly noticing that the grass has got longer.
When I made my Lemmy account (the day reddit put a paywall on the API) most posts didn't even have comments (sorting by hot/popular). And it would be common to run out of new posts after a bit of scrolling. Now it looks about the same level of activity as reddit 10-something years ago.
I just came over from Reddit. I stepped back after the API debacle but didn’t switch to Lemmy until this week when they threatened me for upvoting something “violent” (honestly, no idea what it could have been).
Anyway, I want to agree with your sentiment. Remember Reddit before they started messing with the upvotes? Top posts would have 1k-2k upvotes and outstanding insanely popular posts would break like 7k.
On Lemmy, I scan the comments and I easily can see real people talking. I usually have to scan a long time on Reddit to find real people and not bots recycling comments. It makes me wonder how many real humans are commenting over there.
Oh yeah, I've only been on Lemmy a few months but I've noticed it. I was one baby face emoji (is that just a Voyager thing?) in a sea of old accounts, but recently I've been seeing more and more of those baby emojis
I've been here for a while now. The userbase can be seen as an advantage, but it's also a negative. Things move so fast in reddit and everyone is just passing by each other. You can have actual conversations here though. It feels more communal.
I want more users so niche communities can thrive, but I'm also worried about it becoming too much like Reddit has been for a while now.
Lemmy is not commercial, so the more fundamental problem will be battling bots, hosting, legal issues, and attracting users from sites that burn cash on advertising and entrapment, probably.
The community could get toxic, but it’s not going to be stoked from the top, and it’s more escapable.
Funny enough. I just joined like 10 minutes ago. As someone whose been on reddit since 2008! I’ve finally had enough when my 15 year old account started getting permabanned just for understanding why people like Luigi exist. And getting banned all over because of one comment. Then I saw another post this morning talking about alternatives to reddit and how someone else started getting banned for just about the same reasons. Then I and came across this platform. And it seems very promising at first glance. I’m m very hopeful it can make its way. Reminds me of the older days of early Internet.
It can make its way. I've been here for 2 years, and it's like a more civil and chill version of reddit.
With a lot more genuine interaction and less of the same fucking haha-funny comments in every thread.
Went to find the removed post. The comments are not locked, lol. So everyone is discussing Reddit censorship and how they are upvoting it after it was removed.
Anyway, someone in the comments said this:
“Musk doing a Hitler salute with a target on his head. Text "Make Nazis dead again"
Very nice sticker”
Ok, remove all military bases from those countries and expel all American soldiers and diplomats. No more sharing intelligence with the u.s, they’re compromised anyways
Should there be an image or a link to one? I'm wondering if there's some kind of mbin compatibility issues with some posts (or some other shenanigans). Nothing jumps out in browser dev tools, but I've seen a lot of posts that are nothing but a non-clickable title for me. Thanks!
