Fatigue mask seems cool, until you're just spending 7 extra hours a day procrastinating doing the thing you thought you'd use all this extra time to achieve.
The glasses are OP. With them, nobody can even be mad at you for all the procrastination.
The hours are great but falling asleep instantly and waking up fully rested.. oh my.. I don't remember the last time I felt fully rested even after 8 hours.
Yeah if you take it at face value that one is pretty cursed. You're gonna get sleep deprivation affects and diseases pretty quickly if it only makes you feel rested. But it's entirely possible they intended it to mean properly and healthily rested. If that's the case I think it's a top contender, but still not my choice.
I was trying to avoid "cool item give big money" because that's exactly what I did when I posted the idea on Reddit. It was a set of dice that would give the winning lottery numbers and then scatter like the Dragon Balls. And then guess what half of everyone chose. At least the penny can be used for things other than gambling. Idk maybe something like that should be a single use item to balance things out.
Your thinking too small. With the glasses you can just talk your way into being a ceo and be a billionaire in a few years. Have fun talking to the lottery commission when I am sipping brandy with people I hate.
Ok, the mask if you are actually rested and not just "feeling rested". Being hit with the physical effects of sleep deprivation and having organs start failing after a couple weeks would be a real problem.
Otherwise, that damn penny. Knowing that I have 12 hours of "I win" without any real limitation, even if it ends up being 12 hrs/month, would be obscenely broken. None of the other artifacts even come close. I make sure I always flip on a Monday at about 8am, if it's heads, I apply for jobs I want and trade some stocks until about 1 pm, then go for a walk and see what goodness I can fall into for my life. Head home around 6pm with 2 hours of perfect luck left which I spend working on the cure for Autoimmune diseases and Cancer. Once I have enough wealth built up and have found plenty of cures to Salk the hell our of to piss off the pharma companies, I start working on Nuclear Fusion. Continue this pattern until I get bored.
I agree, with one huge exception. Why the hell are you wasting your lucky coin applying for jobs?
Also, sure, do some trades once to get some starter money. But that's a waste of your precious 12 hours a month. As is going for walks. You can be on vacation the other 98% of the time; spend every second of your penny time doing as much good as you can.
Cure diseases, solve nuclear fusion, end wars and violence, build infrastructure. There seems to be no limit the way it's worded. Hell, build the Enterprise from Star Trek (or a better space ship) and spend your non-penny time exploring the galaxy.
Do physical laws even apply? Can you build replicators for everyone? How about a mansion in a tardis for every person on the planet?
For how long do you have to try something to succeed at it? Maybe you can do each of these things in just a couple seconds. If that's the case, maybe penny time will quickly become non-valuable if you run out of ideas.
I specifically stated that "I apply to jobs I want". Your statement indicates that you consider all work to be a waste of time. I personally want a job developing AI tools that work for the betterment of humanity. I wouldn't need it to pay well as the investments I make on penny time would be my income. Also, it is one of those things that take too long to do in 12 hours, and having a team to work with helps a ton too.
The trades aren't taking 12 hours. If you had the golden touch, and intended on making trades that had long-term viability with 100% success, then an hour or two a month would be all you needed. This also makes sure that the growth is slow enough that the SEC doesn't get alerted.
I didn't say I was going to take a walk to take a walk. I said I was walking around for a few hours to see what good fortune I could find. Again, if I have 100% successful luck, then everything I do is charmed. Walking "aimlessly" around most towns while under such an effect greatly increases the opportunities to happen across something that is beneficial.
The limitation is that you mentioned at the end, the 12 hours every 2 weeks. There is only so much that can be done in that span of time. Everything I mentioned was specifically designed to expand the knock-on effects of the good luck into the rest of the time that I don't have it. A stock portfolio with guaranteed long-term growth, research breakthroughs which need to be built upon by experimentation and work, meeting the right people and forming the right relationships in my community, a long-term employment that provides me the challenges and long-term results in the world. The biggest challenge is to make sure that you have a good life that makes a difference while you have your normal luck, not concentrating on short term success.
I actually wonder if the coin interacts with an int stat. What if it's more nuanced than you'll attempt to create a replicator by doing x and you will successfully find out that it's impossible to do it in the way you intended.
I'm thinking like "I'm going to make a replicator in my garage" then getting stuck since you don't know how to make the attempt. If you would know how then you'd be successful of course.
Again, not all jobs are about money. I want something meaningful to occupy my non-lucky time. All being rich means for me is that I don't have go suffer while I pursue it. It also affords me more time to focus on what I want to focus on and lead a much lower-stress life. I'm not looking to enrich someone with the job, but I would like to enrich the world.
The coin, because I can flip every two weeks to attempt total world domination, and it has a pretty high chance of succeeding somehow. Or just more mundane things like flipping to win the jackpot.
The slick talker glasses are also pretty overpowered, you can achieve much the same as with the penny if you can just give a quick speech and everyone in the room either tries to fuck you or be you five minutes later.
But my heart is with the quick sleeper mask, I’m never really rested after waking up and also procrastinate going to bed all the time. Getting a full rest in one hour sounds like the dream
If you have the coin, you'll pretty much get infinite money. With that you can buy and sleep treatment you need. Also, not having to work means you can sleep whenever you want.
Look, the glasses are nice and all, but they don't give you a 50% change to win the lottery and randomly realise a way to prove/disprove the Riemann hypothesis every two weeks
I wonder how this works with elections. In my country, the votes are counted within 12 hours. When I'm voting on a party, I am attempting to make said party the largest one. Does the coin just give me a 50% chance to unilaterally decide my government every election cycle?
Edit: oh shit, it's not 50% chance, but 100% after it came into effect once. The first time it lands on heads, try to guess the next flip's outcome by guessing it would be heads. Since the coin is in effect, this guess is correct, even though the next coin will only be flipped in two weeks
In other words, the coin just gives you reality warping for halve a day every two weeks
It says "everything the user attempts" which technically you can guess what the next coin result will be correctly but your guess will stop being lucky after 12 hours and your attempt won't be lucky.
Coin sounds the best tbh. It's an infinite money with extra benefits.
I'm assuming there's a downside, like you have to commit to whatever thing you were planning before the flip. So like I say I'm going to slap a cop, and then I flip the coin, hoping for the best.
Maybe the effect only lasts until you look which side of the coin came up - so you won't know how it will go until you've tried it. :D
The sleep mask looks like the obvious bet. Have you ever been awake for 20 hours straight? It's not debilitating, but after about 18 I start getting woozy. I'm gonna go with it anyway, because even if I take the penny and win the lottery, the one thing money can't buy is time
Au conteaire, money well spent does, in fact, buy time. If you are broke and have to spend half your day riding buses to get your errands done and you buy a car and can get them done in an hour or two, that is half a day you just bought. If you can hire a maid and a chef, that is all of the time that would have been spent cleaning and cooking that you now get to figure out how to spend. Don't let anyone lie to you that money cannot buy time, because being able to use money to speed up tasks or offload them entirely is literally buying time.
Yeah the penny is crazy OP. Ultimately, if something can be done, you can do it. Ignoring what you said for a moment, which is entirely true.
Get rich, create company that is focused on sleep research and ways to reduce/eliminate it while staying 100% healthy, unlimited funds, top minds, and every month you can help speed things up significantly.
And if it's fundamentally impossible, you'll still have plenty of other goals to choose from, and you'll absolutely appreciate having the entire day free to do what you want while having to sleep, vs having to still go to work but sitting up all night.
The other catch is, while it states a cool down of 20 hours, functionally you'd generally have to be awake 23 hours, unless you had the luxury of being able to sleep at any time. Sleeping every 20 hours for 1 hour isn't going to stay at a consistent time.
It is overpowered af but don't use it to get money. Use it to get the charisma glasses and each of the others during your first 12 hours (coincidently, they will all be close and easy to grab). Then attempt to write out an exhaustive list of any other objects or abilities that might threaten you (or maybe start with this one, as the glasses are the only one that threatens you from the original list). I'd say hopefully no one else has some other object or ability that warns them of anything that might threaten them, but yours might nullify theirs during your 12 hours. Attempt to deal with the list before half the time has passed.
Then start attempting to gain new abilities. Or attempt to find 28 more coins. 28 instead of 27 so that you can flip the next coin before the current one runs out and never fail the next flip. The sleep mask ensures you never sleep through a transition. Not that you'll even need the ability to be constantly active.
Yeah I was going to choose the sleep mask until I saw the coin. If everything goes my way then I effectively have the powers of the glasses and the frying pan, plus unlimited luxury from lotteries, discoveries, opportunities, etc. The cooldown needs to be nerfed, or maybe add a negative debuff to the tails side.
Idunno, now I'm conflicted. On the one hand, having 20ish more years to enjoy life would be great, but winning the lottery via the penny would make the 40ish waking years I have left much higher quality
Plus the others are essentially crutches. Febreeze underwear? Just take a shower. "Charm" glasses? A shower and a new haircut will get you halfway there. Maybe a watch and new shoes too.
Sleep mask is tempting but you need to hold onto it and use it for the benefit. With the penny you only need to use it once or twice to change your life. No one will ever know because you just "got lucky". You can live a normal life too.
I don't know, the shoes are pretty tempting. I can Sprint at about 10 miles an hour for about 30 seconds right now. Multiplying those by 5 would let me Sprint at 50 miles an hour for two and a half minutes.
I would be the closest thing the real world has to having the flash, or you know kind of like an overweight Sonic the hedgehog
I really wanted to put the caffeinated shoes at number 1, but the lucky Penny sounds OP.
Also, the underwear is an unfortunate item because most people who need it wouldn't choose it. It's also the only item that could be simulated with one hour of effort a day (at most) for most people.
Nah, glasses need to be ranked much higher. Do you realize how powerful those are just in every day use? Always impress at job interviews or reviews for promotions/raises? Use in sales jobs or anything customer/client facing to always come out of it ahead? Not only being able to be effortlessly popular in all forms of relationships, but also always know the right things to say to help those people or help them feel better?
"Social situations" is such a broad term that applies to so much of life, and being able to navigate them perfectly implies more than just schmoozing your way to the top. They'd help you do better and be better, basically everywhere.
I think you're right about the glasses. At the very least they're probably better than that frying pan. The more I think about it they might be right under that penny.
With the glasses it's all fun and games until you're assassinated by someone you accidentally crossed without even knowing. Because assassination is not so much of a social situation ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Being generous, I'd say I could run maybe a half mile at full tilt before I collapse completely. +400% stamina would put me at two miles, and the shoes last "while stamina lasts." Pretty strong, but not Flash OP.
That's what I was thinking but Lucky Penny is weirded way too close to a monkey paw,
And I think the shoes may make you run a long way tall fast but only as fast as you could already run? Because it's only while afternoons lasts. Heck it might just insta gib you
Does the underwear cover basic grooming and self care? I.e. do I still need to trim my fingernails, shave, apply sunscreen?
What about the health benefits of staying clean? I mean nice breath is fine, but if I stop brushing will I get cavities? If I get a cut, do I still need to clean the wound to avoid infection?
This was where I went as well. It’d be fine to appear immaculate, but actually purging every piece of filth from yourself, instantly, constantly is terrifying. Most especially when you consider it a bit further- it’s essentially an erosion field, regardless of how it performs the task. In the most extreme extension of its abilities, it may prevent any of that ooky lead hollow point from landing on you. It’s too vague.
Cool Glasses - As someone on the spectrum who is below-average in terms of physical attractiveness, the one thing I sorely lack is rizz. The ability to put on a pair of glasses and be able to automatically pass any job interview, make any new friends, sell any product, chat up any woman, etc would be massive. Also, no cooldown.
Fatigue Masking Mask - Gaining an extra 7 waking hours of time in a day is massive. If you're productive this is the artifact to go for.
? Tier:
Caffeinated Shoes - This item is either moderately (C) to insanely (A) useful depending on its limitations. If you can skim across entire oceans at superhuman speed then that's massive. If you lack superhuman reflexes and will get splattered into a fine bloody mist from colliding with anything then it becomes a lot less useful.
B Tier:
Frying Pan of Flavor Town - Unless it's a massive cast iron pan, don't expect to be opening up restaurants with it. It's best reserved for your own nutrition and impressing guests with your cooking.
C Tier:
Lucky Penny - A 50% chance of having incredible luck for twelve hours once every fortnight seems great, but the cooldown is prohibitive. Also, unless RNGesus has bad luck protection, there is an incredibly slim chance that none of the 2000 or so times you get to use this item will yield any changes. Also, good luck can still wear off after those twelve hours.
D Tier:
Underwear of Fe'Breeze - Personal hygiene doesn't take up much time, and with the right environment and lifestyle you can easily build up a habit. This one is just the least useful.
I agree with all of this except for the penny. If it makes everything you try go right for 12 hours, you could do some pretty awesome and life-changing stuff, even if it has a long cool down! It could be A or S tier depending on how you use it
The shoes are really a wild card on the list since they are percentage based. On Usain Bolt they might as well be the Winged Sandals of Mercury, but on my flabby ass they'd just make me a fairly competent runner.
Ok great now you have the cute of death. You're the only person who knows it's true and you created it basically out of complete accident. Now explain it's mechanics to a scientist the next day.
Or just gamble legally.
Start with straight-up casino gambling, work your way to 100k, do investment gambling using the coin every chance you can, get yourself to 10mill, do property and hedge investing, eventually you don't need the coin, save it for when you absolutely need it while your money makes money and you actually live a comfortable easy life
I would go crazy just to have the fatigue masking mask.
1 hour... fully rested??? Assuming one gets 8 hours of sleep a night (though, who is really getting 8 a night on lemmy?), you've just converted your ratio of sleep-to-awake from 1:2 to 1:23.
Extreme change imo, plus gives you the benefit of having time to take care of your hygiene anyway.
It is lucky, so it isn’t made of the standard copper alloy. It just happens to be the one penny randomly minted from pure iridium. The artifact’s canon stipulates that no one is ever aware of this.
The penny is so OP and I don't think people understand how. You could essentially control almost any event in the world just by betting on it. If you win the coin toss, just bet on an election or the World Cup or whatever. All of a sudden, Tupac is still alive and just won both. Plus, you won the trifecta and turned $1 into $1 million.
Be the president? Too stressful! Run the whole world from the shadows. Literally no one will ever think you control anything, even if you tell them. It will look like pure coincidence.
The lucky penny is broken af. For example, you can use it to replicate everything else on the list or learn abilities to match them or better.
Basically, it's exactly how luck is purported to work in various fictional universes. It's kinda similar to Constantine's (hellblazer) ability.
Edit: I am seeing people disagree with the penny, but unless the penny is magical in not only giving you luck but also in how the flip goes you can practice to make the flip go in your favour by practicing (I have been able to take the equivalent of a penny in my country and make it fall on the exact side I want almost every time)
With no explicit negative feedback and the penny going dormant in between, you can absolutely practice it. Hell make it so the first time you get the lucky heads you both practice and attempt to make the penny's lucky effect permanent or at least semipermanent so that it goes in your favour the next fortnight you are supposed to flip it (if it can't be made permanent without flipping)
Easily the penny. The mask is tempting to have more time in my day but I can just gamble and make a ton of money meaning I wouldn't have to work. It would also help with a ton of other stuff.
You can't have my frying pan, but supper's at 6, the pan will have mac and cheese in it tonight, made with twisty noodles instead of elbows and my bechamel based cheese mix has about 6 kinds of cheese topped with more cheese and panko.
Look, everyone votes for penny, but really if your social skills are exceptional, rendering you able to "flawlessly navigate social situations", you can get a lot of it anytime.
Want a super high paying job? Glasses! Wanna hit that girl? Glasses! Wanna get anything you want? Stay cool, with the use of glasses!
Penny does seem OP, but only for as long as it's active, and while it is on cooldown (which is, on average, a month) you live your regular life with all the misery, and even if you've managed to accumulate money and influence through your lucky streaks, there's always a lot that can go wrong. Besides, a random nature of a penny means you can never rely on it, and always have to assume you'll lose. Betting on a penny makes you the ultimate RNG person, with dramatic rises and even more dramatic falls. Betting on glasses makes you insanely powerful on demand. Always. Anytime.
yeah but- you can get a high paying job, successfully hit on that girl, and so much more with the penny, yeah it's only a 12h effect every two weeks (if you're lucky) but during those 12hours you are a god
Glasses are cool and all but you start to disappoint as soon as you take them off. Finding a girl that you will like forever that really likes you for who you are is a coin skill.
The fatigue mask makes the underwear irrelevant. If I have an extra 7 hours in a day, I can spend some of that showering. You'd essentially gain an extra 3.5 months every year in additional time, plus you'd never be tired for any of it. There's a lot I could do with that time.
The Pan is questionably useful. Delicious food is cool, but has limited use with the cooldown. If I wanted to start a restaurant or something, could I only cook 3 delicious meals in a day? Or does "while in use" mean I could use it to continuously cook for 8 hours? If so, you could run a 3 star Michelin restaurant.
The shoes also seem limited to me. I can only use it until my stamina runs out? My stamina is already so low that 5x isn't even that much. I suppose I could use them to win the Olympics without training, but would they count as a violation? I really don't want to get involved in the underground track and field ring.
The glasses are very useful, lots of ways to find success if you know your way around networking. Being able to talk your way into or out of anything could get you crazy money, power, success, etc. in whatever you choose to do.
The penny is also mad useful. It essentially covers the abilities of all other items, albeit with a massive cooldown. Even still having an entire day of things going your way 26 times a year is an insane amount. You could win the lottery, start and sell successful businesses, find the love of your life, whatever, as long as you can make it happen in 12 hours.
I think it really comes down to the mask, the glasses or the penny. The mask really appeals to the tired part of me, but it doesn't really give you any superhuman abilities, just extra time to be normal, and I'd probably just waste it anyway. And while the glasses would be useful daily, you'd still have to do a lot of work to get yourself into important social situations to make use of it. Essentially your job would become networking. With the penny, I really think I could use its power to get myself into those situations by sheer luck, and then also have them go my way, by luck. I think I could end up making as much progress in those 12 hours as I could with 2 weeks of the glasses. Plus with the money I win from the lottery, I could fund projects faster instead of having to talk my way into funding.
Honestly I think the pan, mask and the glasses are kind of a curse? How would I ever know if people actually like ME or just the glasses? All of my relationships would require keeping the glasses on, that's just stressful! How would I enjoy the taste of food or ever try new meals if it's always great? I'd just make the same thing over and over while being content, not actually happy. And if I sleep only an hour a day that's just gonna put me out of sync with the world and lead to loneliness.
The long cool down on the penny is honestly it's best feature, gives you room to still live your life.
This is something I've thought about for a long while. As a socially awkward kid, I read the stories of King Arthur. One of the stories about one of his knights (can't remember which) the knight is given an enchanted item that charms everyone he speaks to and makes them like him. This immediately captured my fascination as a socially inept kid, but the more I thought about it, it would be living hell.
You would never EVER believe anyone genuinely enjoyed your company again, constantly wondering if it was the enchantment. Even if you removed the item and found someone who liked you natrually without it, normal appreciation or regard would NEVER come close to the enchanted one, and it would now FEEL like they disliked you. It would poison your entire life
The penny for sure. The mask might give you 7 more hours but the penny gives you 8, if you use it for money.
The glasses could be nice, but that depends wholly on the value system. Is charisma naturally rated 1 to 10? +35 is awesome! On a scale from 1 to 1000 not so much.
I mean, we need scale on the luck too. What is a normal amount of luck. Is +100 luck 200% your normal luck? If so that might kind of suck. If it's normally ranked out of 10, +100 is worldbreaking shit
I was like f yeah let these glasses turn into superpowers but then yeah, it's not even a contest. 1 hr and fully rested is OP, you have to keep it quiet though, don't let your employer know, or anyone else, or the things become mandatory.
As someone who's continuously tired after tanking mono and COVID, I'll take the mask. Heck, I'd even take it if it gave me 8 hours of restful sleep. Just anything to wake up and feel rested for a while
The shoes are probably worthless to most folks, +400% stamina isn't a whole lot when you only have 1 stamina. Would they work during sex? You're faster, but also last longer?
I'd probably take the mask, just because that's what would benefit me the most right now.
Charisma glasses would open up all kinds of awful things in the wrong hands. And there will be hell to pay if you take them off at the wrong moment.
The shoes open up a whole can of worms. Just consume the last two decades of Flash (DC comics) media and you'll understand. Breaking physics like this opens up all kinds of utility, but the universe does not abide by people ignoring thermodynamics and spacetime.
The sleep mask sounds like a way to get anywhere from 5-8 more wakeful hours in a day, every day. But do I also get tired like normal if I use it? Because if I have to go to sleep every 20 hours, and spend 2-3 of those hours absolutely exhausted, that's gonna completely screw up my schedule.
The frying pan is my speed. Get people over to your place and you won't need the other items. Just make awesome relationships and build a posse around impossibly good home cooked meals. Win everybody over, work your way up in society, and start slinging tasty meals at state dinners. Together, you'll conquer the world one plate at a time.
Edit: The coin is a monkey's paw in disguise. Stay away.
Edit2: Underwear... look, if you need this, you have to re-evaluate some stuff. Otherwise, healthy body odor is kind of a factor in courtship. Plus it says "odor free", so that includes perfume. That said, if you're the rugged outdoor type and want to trek Patagonia for weeks on end, this is the item to pack.
The frying pan, mask and coin are definitely the best 3, in order. The frying pan is good for QOL, and if "while in use" is for an unlimited time, you could definitely start a business with it, as it would most likely make supernaturally good food. The mask just straight up effectively make your life longer because youd be concious for more of it. The average lifespan is 75 years in first world countries, so assuming 8hrs of sleep a day, most people will sleep for 8212 days in their lives (~22yrs) however, assuming you got the mask at 18, and only slept using it thereafter,by the time you are 75 you'd only have slept for 2470 days(~6.7yrs), meaning you are concious for 24905 days, which is almost the same as having lived to 115 with normal 8hr sleep. However, the coin is objectively best. The only real drawback to the coin is the 2 week wait period, which seems would be triggered regardless if you land a tails.that being said, a 50% to be capable of limited reality bending for 12 hours every 2 weeks is still super fucking good. You could just try to do something thats physically impossible and it should work anyways. The capabilities are actually almost limitless with it.
Definitely the underwear. I have the opposite of whatever gene SE Asians have that makes you have no BO. No matter what I do, my BO can defeat any deodorant in ~6h.
The glasses are OP, everyone's like "the coin bruh"
Nah bruh, you know the power of speeches? Now have it so everyone's on your side all the time. There's no cooldown, it's just always active.
You can just talk your way into anything. You don't need money if you don't have to pay for anything, if you want money you can still talk your way into having it. You wanna be president? Why not! Etc etc. The glasses are unreasonable.
This is a really cool list since it gets a bunch of people in the comments to fight over which one is the best. Obviously several could somehow let you gain a million dollars, but money alone might not be the limit.
I think the penny is overrated. I don't interpret + 100 to be a guarantee, only that desirable outcomes are much more likely. I see it as a long-term general buff but difficult to direct.
I mean, if everyone sleeps 7 less hours, that's 7 more hours to do other stuff, and a lot of people do "other stuff" that require some kind of investment - painting requires colors, carpentery requires wood, most stuff requires electricity etc. - so people would HAVE TO work more in order to fuel the 7 more hours of economy.
