What is the most unhinged conspiracy theory?
  • My pet conspiracy theory that California does not exist. It was invented by democrats to pad their electoral votes. Any one who has traveled there actually went to a staged area in Oregon. Anyone who claims to live there is either brainwashed or in on it. Maps, globes, etc. have all been altered. Satellites have special software that adds California to its images. Spacecraft windows are actually screens that digitally alter earth to add California.

Once you consider that California is allegedly the location of Hollywood and movies often create convincing, fake worlds, it makes sense. Hollywood was created to take advantage of the tech developed to fake California and continue funding the conspiracy...

  • What light novel(s) have you read last week, and what do you think about it? [May 13 - May 19]
  • Disciple of the Lich: Or How I was Cursed by the Gods and Dropped into the Abyss! (Vol 7) So many of these stories end up abandoned, needlessly padded with filler, or continued long past the obvious end point. I really appreciate it when one actually comes to a satisfying conclusion.

The final fights were enjoyable and consistent with the nature of the established world, the epilogue was fitting. Major plot points resolved. All in all a very satisfying end to the series. 4/5

Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super CheatPowers (Vol 1-2) The anime was enjoyable and J-Novel club has this on catchup, so when the anime hit a cliffhanger I picked it up.

Vol 1 was fine at first. A hint of a plot, world development and character introductions, etc. But the epilogue pretty much ruined it for me. (maybe the first time I've seen a chapter start with a trigger warning.) 2/5

Vol 2 was kind of dull. I guess this is supposed to be a slice of life comedy, but I don't find any of the characters particularly funny or entertaining. 2/5

The Apothecary Witched Turned Divorce Agent (Vol 1-2) Another J-Novel Club catchup. I enjoyed this one more than I expected. A fair amount of the plot is predictable, but it is reasonably well written and "flows" well. I was actually shocked when I reached the afterword in Vol 2 because it was moving along so well. 4/5

  • Hello GPT-4o
  • 5x usage limits (if they last) is the real news here. The current limits make it unusable for any meaningful projects.

I just dropped chatgpt plus because of those limits...

  • OpenAI plans to announce Google search competitor on Monday, sources say
  • They need to focus back on the base product instead of adding more features. It has been over 1 year and chatgpt using gpt4 is still crippled to the point of being useless.

The last thing I want is a search engine that works 10 times then tells me to come back in 4 hours to resume searching...

  • With two Boeing whistleblowers dead in one month, either Boeing is actively killing them, or there are enough whistleblowers that this rate of death is not statistically significant
  • Could it just be that whistleblowing is intensely stressful and difficult (reporters, lawyers, harassment from former coworkers and company fanboys, difficulty finding new employment, etc.) I imagine all of that makes whistleblowers far more susceptible to disease and mental issues.

We need stronger whistleblower protection laws. Not just in case companies put out a hit, but also to help the whistleblowers endure and recover from doing the right thing…

  • Imagine being chased by a t1000 when it suddenly stops and displays a message “you are out of t1000 credits. The t1000 will resume chasing you in four hours or you can opt to be chased by a t3.5 instead”

  • Sigh, I’m just now realizing that the whole point was to contrast how Makoto’s students succeed on their own merits vs the purple coats who relied on the goddess.

I mean it was obvious they showed up just to fail and make his students look better, but the meta plot about over reliance on the goddess vs personal effort needed more focus.

Actually that would have helped with the elites in the box as well. Faith in the goddesses protection would explain their calm. Imagine the headmaster telling Makoto off, then the purple coats failing, then the headmaster turning back to Makoto to accept his aid. Really would have helped to push the slowly developing narrative about Makoto standing in as an alternative to the goddess.

  • The writing and pacing for the last three episodes has been pretty poor. It really feels like they are dragging things out to fill episodes. And not just the pacing of the plot as a whole but individual scenes. Monsters just appeared and started eating people yet you see various characters just standing around chatting casually. The students are face to face with one and it just sits there calmly while they discuss the situation. One character is given 10 seconds to use a magic arrow, then they discuss their plan for 15 seconds… no sense of urgency, danger, intensity, etc. no emotion.

(I think it would have helped if the show did more to build the students up, especially as individuals, and maybe that’s the case for the source, but for what should be a pivotal scene, I have no idea what that archer girls name is or why she matters.)

We get one cutaway to the demons for some reason, and rather than discuss something relevant to the current episode that would add to the intensity of the moment (e.g. something about the mutants or their plans for the city, or some foreshadowing about that) they discuss the rings we already knew they had and already assumed would be improved on but seemingly have no relevance to the current events.

Logically the rings would have then mattered in the focus story (e.g. being used to keep local authorities from using the goddesses blessing against the monsters), but no, that scene seems to only exist to tease the audience with the real plot while we are forced to sit though whatever this current mess is.
