I’m not from either of the titular countries, but wife and I had been curious about having kids. A mild financial and budgetary sense plus a quick search for local childcare rates tells us everything we need to know about affordability.
Unless children are our number one goal in this life, it’s just not happening. It’s lovely to entertain the thought, but for us it would be financial suicide.
I love ARM so much compared to x86, but speaking from a low-cost consumer server perspective, x86 is a great value, and it comes with a no compromises on software compatibility.
I don’t think the car brand comparison is a great one. While I get your point, the purpose of using different car brand names is not for confusion but actually to reduce confusion — to clarify which products are targeting a luxury market.
For a counter example, consider how Samsung sells premium and cheap smart phones. The cheap smart phones give Samsung a bad name which might be associated with the higher end offering in the eyes of a consumer.
It’s not fair to compare to Toyota to Lexus because a Lexus is targeting a different customer and making different trade-offs in their product, even though it’s the same company.
The recent Pi chips are heavily modified. They’re becoming less and less like their TV tuner roots. I wouldn’t exactly call it a failed product line either. I thought that IP went into numerous devices.
I mean, yes. A game that’s enjoyable by more people should have wider appeal.
It’s a small world. Make tribal monkey brain happy.
Hey, it’s me! Spot on. But should be arch.
It really depends. I game a ton, and Proton works for all the games I usually play. However, I know there are games especially multiplayer online games that still have issues.
One of the best parts of my Linux desktop is its lack of agency. It does what I tell it to do, and it doesn’t do what I don’t tell it to do.
I could even just use it forever, as is, making no updates or changes and it would continue to behave in exactly the same way until such point as I decide to install an update or make a change.
It’s marvelous.
EDIT: I see this is a Windows community, so I would like to add an addendum to make my comment relevant to Windows. I would appreciate Windows much more on my work machine if it only did what I asked it to do and nothing else.
I’ve always thought having proprietary drivers was really weird. Don’t you want people to maintain your code for free?
If the croutons hurt, you’re doing it wrong.
Many people use the word without reflecting on how they mean to use it. I’ve seen many a relationship fight indirectly over the ambiguity.
You’re right. I’m glad that they’re trying though.
Google Earth Very Slow in Firefox
Google Earth is almost not usable in Firefox. I’d like to ask for suggestions from the community because I really don’t want to use Google Chrome where it works great. I’m on Linux Mint, an Ubuntu derivative.
When lockdown mode is enabled in Android 15, USB data access will be disabled, preventing potential "juice jacking" attacks.
![Lockdown mode in Android 15 protects your phone from 'juice jacking'](https://lemdro.id/pictrs/image/cc4e5024-c16e-443b-b65f-05ccde7cc6a7.jpeg?format=webp&thumbnail=256)
Points taken from article:
- Android 15 is adding a built-in mechanism to protect your device from “juice jacking” attacks.
- Charging will be allowed when lockdown mode is enabled in Android 15, but USB data access will not.
- Juice jacking is a largely theoretical problem you don’t really need to worry about, but it’s still nice that Android will protect you against it.
Homeowners Block My Local Passenger Rail
I’m not sure if an opinion piece is appropriate here, so please let me know if this doesn’t fit the theme of the community, and I’ll avoid sharing such thoughts in the future.
I’m extremely frustrated with the car centric culture in my area. I live about 25 miles west of a quarry. Every day I watch trains go up and down the railroad mostly carrying gravel. This railroad stretches for several hours by car in each direction, connecting several large cities and even passing a few tourist attractions, and despite our traffic congestion problems there is little interest in trying to use this rail for actual people.
One company moved in and started running a new passenger rail service. Within a few weeks, we had protesters at the railroads complaining that drivers don’t understand railroad crossings. I saw posters about how trains were killing residents when drivers park on the tracks and get hit. I don’t understand! Where do you think the train is going to go? They don’t exactly come out of nowhere. They follow the tracks! And we’ve always had trains passing through our town before. At a later local election a candidate ran on the premise that they’re going to protect home values and our children by reducing or eliminating the number of trains passing through our town. This candidate did win our local election and sadly they succeeded in cutting down on rail investment.
Fast-forward a couple years later. Passenger rail stations were built at the endpoints of this rail to ferry tourists. I drive parallel to this rail on the way to work several times per week for almost 45 minutes each way, 20 minutes of which is heavy traffic. I get to enjoy watching people ride the train while there’s no stop anywhere near my house because our local government has sided with homeowners that a passenger rail station is “simply too dangerous.” I would have to drive over an hour to the nearest passenger rail station to ride the train, and I can literally see the tracks from my apartment.
Every time I see that train I feel bitter. I could save so much money if these boneheads would have let them build a train station in our town. Absolutely ridiculous! The train is there. The rail is there. I don’t understand why a train is such a personal, existential threat to your way of life.
Expedition Thirteen: Adrift
Hello Everyone! A lot has changed in the years since No Man’s Sky released. There’s so much we love about the game now, but there was something unique at release in how alone you felt in the universe. Going further back I have great memories of early unreleased versions of No Man’s Sky where there.....

Surprised nobody has posted about the new expedition. I learned about the last one from Lemmy, so I'm returning the favor in case someone else learns about it from me.
Six weeks remaining!
Read receipts, typing indicators, and more.

AI Summary:
Google Messages will support texting 911 via RCS starting this winter, offering features like location sharing and read receipts. This upgrade improves emergency texting which is already supported by over half of US dispatch centers. Google collaborates with RapidSOS for enhanced responder info. This announcement precedes Apple's expected RCS support in iOS 18, aiming to broaden RCS adoption.

I wish that every website that works only in Chrome also has to be compatible with Firefox.
I wouldn't have Chrome installed if it weren't for those crappy school and government websites that refuse to work on anything else but Chrome.
I wish my dog could walk himself.
It would be so much more convenient for the both of us, and then he could go outside, anywhere, whenever he likes.
Lemmy is probably hurting email spammers because users and community names look like email addresses.
I wonder how many thousands of spam bots have tried to connect to the servers and send email using text ripped from these pages federated across numerous domains.
And they can’t just block one website. They’d have to individually block every node if they want to crawl the web for email addresses to steal. I hope it’s a real thorn in their side.
Is cave exploration an indoor or an outdoor activity?
You’re indoors in the sense that you’re protected from the weather and the elements, and the cave could even have some kind of covering or entrance area that could be considered a door or doorway. People have built homes in caves.
Is caving an outside, inside activity?

Sunday with my Portable Mag Loop
I don't know many hams nor do I chat with the same hams on a recurring basis, and my wife is only tangentially interested in radio inasmuch as it makes me happy, so I thought I'd be the life of the party and post about the best day on the air I've had yet. My aim is to share my enthusiasm with the world.
I've been a ham for about a year. I'm young (experience-wise) and still learning. Until this weekend I've been using a portable whip on my balcony combined with my President Lincoln for 10 meter contacts. My antenna mounting situation was awfully complicated, so I often left the antenna mounted several days at a time such as on the weekends. This finally bit me when the fine women who were feeding the squirrels next door moved out. The squirrels went ballistic and destroyed my antenna along with wreaking havoc on the rest of the neighborhood. They chewed through the loading coil and the coax! Preposterous. I cannot imagine what they thought to gain from doing so. Nevertheless, it put me out of commission for a while.
I think the math behind magnetic loop antennas is really cool, and I don't have much space, so I decided to try the Chameleon F-loop as my next antenna, the base model. Wow, did I have so much fun today! Tuning was tricky because of that high Q and narrow bandwidth, but I didn't realize how active the airwaves could be when you can hear clearly. My reception was so much better because my noise floor seems to be lower with the mag loop compared to the whip. I also enjoyed the directionality of the loop, giving me a new property to play with to get the best reception.
Thanks for reading!

I wish I was I was on paid vacation for two weeks starting immediately.
I really don't want to go into work tomorrow.
Google appears to be working on an editing feature for the Messages app. The feature is hiding in the latest beta.
![Google Messages could soon let you edit texts after sending](https://lemdro.id/pictrs/image/bddcbc8d-b303-4a7d-8a7d-a1fc4d9c4a05.jpeg?format=webp&thumbnail=256)
This sounds like a nice step towards modernizing texting, but it's a shame that Messages doesn't have an open RCS API to encourage broad adoption across messaging apps.
Anybody still playing this game?

Been thinking about giving it another go just for some casual fun. I read that the developers still maintain it and the little silly animations are adorable.
Is it a good game? Not really, but it's cute.
Please excuse the YouTube link as I understand it's taboo around here, but I can't stop giggling at that animation and this community can always use more love.
Audio Loopback App
On many operating systems, I can create audio loopback devices to feed audio files into another app as if it was coming from a microphone. I can also tee off audio going out to the speakers.
Is there an app that lets me redirect audio devices to perform the equivalent of connecting audio inputs and outputs on Android?
Note to moderators: while such a feature can be used for piracy, that is not my goal, and there are better methods if I was trying to be nefarious. I want to use it to feed audio samples from soundboard apps into my active phone call without having to play the sound effects through the microphone. I'd also like to use it to directly supply the output of an MP3 into another app that records my voicemail message for better quality than can be performed by simply recording through the microphone.
