Having them pointed towards lemmy.ml is a little concerning.

More than a little concerning, it's happened plenty of times before. People see that BS on the Tankie Triad and then leave thinking Lemmy is just a bunch of tankies

Sometimes they try another non-Tankie instance and realize that we're not all like that, but I'm sure a majority never return always thinking that all of Lemmy is "that Tankie hangout" or worse, a Voat 2.0
I'm not very into Lemmy, what's so bad about lemmy.ml?
- They're part of the Tankie Triad who deny the human rights violations of the CCP and hold them up as the gold standard.

- It's controversial. It was created by the creators of Lemmy and has some techbro feelings about a lot of stuff. I'm not trying to start an .ml fight, I'm against pushing for any particular instance.
  
  I would recommend new users to stay away from the biggest ones and steer towards one level down. You want enough communities and instances to line your front page, but the big ones are big enough. Let's spread the load.

When you've settled in, consider joining a smaller instance! Just because it has "Lemmy" in the name doesn't mean it's official or good. We all federate together, so you can still join communities hosted on other instances.

For best results, subscribe to communities you want to have a dedicated feed for, and block communities, instances and users that aren't worth your time, since there is the occasional jerk like you might find anywhere on the internet.

I'm going to repeat what I've been saying a lot lately. The default is "active." If that gets boring (it probably will), switch to "hot," "new," and "top 6 hours" to get a more vibrant experience. The search engine is confusing at first, but is pretty good.

Lemmy mods delete posts and threads too. Interesting choice to use the Lemmy.ml instance in this message. Coincidentally they just deleted one of my threads in asklemmy recently.

They should really include the no ads thing. I think it's a great selling point, and it would be useful to leverage.

While this is true some instances do need donations it's very probable that some instances could include ads in the future.
- Totally fair, but at the moment, there are none. And even if instances will start using 3rd party ads, there will also be instances that will never run ads. The power of federation at work.

While I agree with the message, that the people should leave all centralized Social Media services, the big mistake here is concentrating a massive user-base on one instance (.ml) of one specific service (Lemmy) instead of spreading the influx towards many smaller, but still solid instances and federated services (PieFed, Mastodon, MBin).

Even disregarding .ml's reputation, if this post does reach a substantial user-base, the only thing happening then is .ml receiving a HoD and people losing faith in the Fediverse as a whole (e: spelling) due to this, sadly. :c

- Look I'm not gonna dox the mf'er, but the primary force behind the .ml instance, and frankly all of lemmy, spends a lot of time enjoying the privilege and benefits that come with being a well paid software living in a "global north" social democracy. Thankfully, they have since cleaned up their profile, but previously, it was trivially easy to figure out where a certain person lived, at least the metro, what company they worked at, and that their income range was well into the 6 figure plus.
  
  If you are new to lemmy, maybe take a bit more time to develop your understanding of the 'lore' that underpins this place. If you are already familiar, please understand that basically the core development team of lemmy, and admins of the dot ml instance advocate for a kind of authoritarianism they've been shielded from their entire lives, and that they've enjoyed extraordinary privilege that has only, historically, been available to the global north, and specifically, a kind of democratic socialism that affords them incredible breadth of opportunity. And its fine that they have contradictions and don't live their perspectives; but I'm going to exercise a significant degree of criticism at this disconnect.

Aside from other concerns, I find the association with Brexit to be less than ideal. But people should also note that this was posted on r/anarchocommunism so it makes sense they recommended lemmy.ml

Overall it's fine, we are still at the stage where just getting people to hear about the existence of Lemmy is a big win. They may join and leave, they may just navigate to the page and not join, but now they are aware of it and may eventually decide to join in the future when reddit fucks up again.

- That's true, but I'm just pointing out that it's a leftist subreddit recommending lemmy.ml, so it's not going out to a generalized audience.
  
  And honestly they're not as tankie as people claim, that title really belongs to hexbear and lemmygrad. The management of lemmy.ml is tankie friendly, but many or even most of the users are not actually tankies.
  
  It's very complicated because they were the main server for a long time before any of us even joined Lemmy, and all of their public descriptions don't even mention leftism at all, it's just about privacy and FOSS. Many users have made accounts there and used it for years without really caring or engaging with the tankie allegations or posts. It's not as bad as some people make it out to be.
  
  Hexbear on the other hand is actually worse than anyone could ever explain without experiencing it for yourself. So let's not forget the two servers are not identical.

I hope lemmy.ml is ready for the influx, particularly as this post linked them directly.
