Imagine that! Wannabe dictator asking whether or not they should invade a sovereign country! He's truly a good person because he asked his people if they should invade instead of flat out invading!
My bins weren't collected last week, now we've got snow in them and all the cardboard's all wet and soggy. If that is not evidence of a tyrannical dictatorship, then I don't know what is.
I’m a Dane living in the UK. This is beginner level Trump/musk idiocy. Denmark is currently wrestling with the US demanding a piece of their kingdom (and yes, Denmark is a democracy, so using the word kingdom may seem a bit anachronistic, but in this case we are talking about Greenland, which is an autonomous region of the Danish commonwealth, so the official term is “kingdom”)
And I don't mean that as an insult, all this shit is reruns of shit we've already been thru. WW2 had a large push by wealthy American businessmen to not just abstain from the war, but they advocated for joining the Axis back then.
Capitalism and fascism go hand in hand, the ultra wealthy will always want fascism because fascist leaders love bomb them to get their wealth and power behind the movement.
We all need to understand this shit so we can understand what worked last time and why it didn't work permanently
Fascism cannot exist without capitalism. Capital is what supports and strengthens fascism - the idea that business is more important than the people. This sounds like how the world has always been but it wasn't until the 60s, at least in the US, when the business leaders wanted to stop unions, make more money, stop the possibilities of environmentalists from hurting profits, etc. The pushback from the people in the 60s spawned the Civil Rights and threatened to derail the business first approach America had gotten used to from after the Depression. The war years gave too much money and power to too few people and things like the Business Plot simmered under the surface of our grandparents' generation. Two generations of propaganda that made social and community based governing sound villainous has brought us to a full on fascist revolution slow burning through wealthy democracies.
Not that the empire still exists of course, so what you're actually invading is the land that used to belong to a society that no longer exists and a different society is there now and is unhappy about having to deal with this nonsense.
Non American , and non brit here. Why is this waste of energy so interested in the UK and Europe now ? I know there will be plenty of cynical takes which I will probably endorse however I’m interested in what his actual motivation might be. Does he just want parties in power in the given country that he has influence over for the sake of legislative advantage for his businesses? Or is it trollconomics for sake of driving signups to his failing social network I forget the name of?
He wants to be king of the world, it's as simple as that. He already has the most money (not that that'll stop him from wanting more), now he just needs to have the most power, and actively supporting the rise of fascism around the world (which he has been doing for long before he let his mask start to slip and now completely come off) is his way of getting it.
The fact that you think he bought twitter, or is running it the way he is as some sort of troll, rather than a very real, and very effective, way of manipulating the public as well as politics as a whole, shows how well it works.
Republicans have only threatened to invade Mexico, Canada and the UK so far, with a few days to go yet until they take power. They're basically pacifists.
It's twitter for the right, Lemmy for the left, bluesky for the libertarians and Linux users have joined either us, or gone back to trusty bulletin boards
US here, we need to worry about our own government right now, and many of us wish Musk would drive his own Cyber truck to test dummy it's 'features' personally. As a US citizen I am sorry the oligarchy is a pain for you as well.
It'll be worse for you guys though. Trade sanctions cut both ways and the thing is the UK has the rest of the world to trade from, but the US will impose sanctions on everyone and shoot themselves in the foot.
"Even reading the local newspaper, some of the headlines can be very upbeat, and beneath it are just loads of comments that, 'This is a disaster, it'll just never work, Bradford is doomed'."

Hmm, let’s see, one country was ruled by a murderous dictator using chemical weapons against his own people and crushing dissidents to a pulp in secret prisons. The other is a mature, functioning democracy with rule of law and a free press.
Yes, yes, I can see how you think that’s exactly the same.
The chemical weapons claim has debunked many times since the claim was made by intelligence orgs, and the white helmets exposed as a western regime change operation.
Which country is the “mature, functioning democracy with rule of law and free press”? Would that be the UK, which is crushing pro-Palestine protestors, arresting journalists for criticism of Israel, arming genocide, and participating in CIA torture black sites? The country that has openly declared it will defy ICC arrest warrants?
