Wow no way... Slide has always been my favorite 3rd party app, and I always felt like the only one using it when I'd mention it on reddit. What an awesome surprise!
I stopped using it because apparently it had been abandoned by the dev, and switched to Infinity because it's extremely similar, but I loved Slide too. Will definitely use this.
Slide is the very first Android app that pulled me away from Reddit is Fun until Slide got abandoned. To see it resurrected for use on Lemmy would be a dream. I loved Slide interface. Was the app I preferred over Apollo too on Apple aside from the performance issues it didn't get sorted out before being abandoned, which led me back to Apollo.
SLIDE WAS THE BEST! It ran under the radar and the dev was MIA for a long time so I had to switch to Infinity but it was the best app I used for Reddit, soooo pumped to see Slimmey
I would give you a hand job on top of whatever the app costs. Slide was the best reddit app until it got abandoned. Slide for lemmy? I just jizzed my pants at the idea
For me, I liked the ability to swipe left and right between subreddits (the order on which you could configure), you could also swipe between posts. It's also open source and pretty customisable. Unfortunately it's not been updated in over a year.
I can't speak for everyone, but I really enjoyed the "get out of your way" style the app has. I also really liked that you had to slide to upvote/downvote on posts instead of having static buttons you can accidentally press. It also had a decent system for switching between multiple accounts. Finally, it's all open source so one could fork it and customize it if they wanted to.
The concept of swiping was used everywhere. Makes it quick and easy to use. You could just swipe right to close a thread, or the video/image. No need to use the back button, or reach for the tiny X in the corner.
And the seamless galley mode was awesome. Very unique (only found it quite similar in Joey).
I was the only reddit app I found that really worked with new comments.
what I mean with that is when you read a thread, then come back 5h later it would highlight all the new comments so you would not have to reread all the ones you already read the first time.
such a great feature (maybe others have it too, but from the many I tried non had it in that way)
also great ux with swiping allowed for super efficient navigation
There were a couple of other Reddit clients also available from F-Droid (Dawn, Diode, Infinity, RedReader), but I don't remember why I picked Slide over those. All I know is that I didn't spend much time evaluating others and that Slide was "good enough" to not annoy me into wanting to switch.
When Slide died slowly I eventually switched to Joey, which is very close to Slide regarding usability. One thing Joey did better was zoomable videos. How cool is that!?
I really hope for a comeback of Slide as an Lemmy app!
So glad to see former reddit third party developers and apps rising to the occasion! I sincerely hope that the Infinity devs and other FOSS initiatives are coming onboard too.
Slide is all I've used for so long I can't even remember different! I don't go on Reddit anymore, but I've been hesitant to actually uninstall Slide. Love to be able to use it here!
was a bit apprehensive about sharing it, its really hard to describe how much of a challenge this codebase is. I'm constantly juggling refactoring for maintainability against just "getting something that works", but if you're interested, there you go
I know my words may seem hollow. But I am thrilled to see this happen. Slide for reddit was a work of art on user focused ui, and I may of missed it more than I miss reddit.
Thank you so much! I tried several Reddit apps over the years and Slide was by far my favorite. I used it up until the blackout when I left Reddit for Lemmy.
Yes please, I just uninstalled slide last week. While some things would bug out ocassionally, I couldn't imagine using any other app with reddit.
I'm on Jerboa now and its just not the same.
I not sure if it's the right place for suggestions, and I know you didn't ask for any, but I hope you don't mind.
If possible, it would be great to have option to add custom instances, and to add the option to 'force' it to add the instance, even it the app thinks it's not a valid instance.
On Jebora and Lemmur, you can add only some of the instances (the app probably checks a list or smth). Both of them don't let you to add new instances.
Thanks in advace for your work man, really looking forward to it :)
Awesome! I tried various 3rd party reddit apps over the years and stuck with slide the longest. Always liked its simplicity, ux design and focus on pictures.
I'm an iOS user though, anything planned for that?
(I'm on Mlem beta meanwhile.)
I will! So far, the reason for that is thst Kbin doesnt expose any kind of API, so any app has to scrape the site, but I would definitely aim for dual compatibility eventually, especially once an API exists
When I became interested in open source software I started using Slide but then it slowly turned unusable. I tried many reddig apps and in the end settled for Infinity because it also is open source and it has nice UI (not as nice as slide). After all these years it brings me joy to see anything related Slide.
