What books are you reading at the moment?
  • It's my favorite series. Has been since the first time I read Gardens of the Moon. Abercrombie's First Law a close second though.

It's hard to explain why I love it. From the first chapter it pulled me in and doesn't let me go until I'm done (excepting the first few chapters of House of Chains ;)). The scope of the story is one thing. How events hundreds of thousands of years ago shape the events in the books, the chronological jumps, how seemingly unrelated incidents suddenly become entwined. Erikson is a master at making every puzzle piece fall into place; even if you're confused about something as you read it, a few chapters or a book later it will make sense. The little throwbacks to events in previous books, etc. Besides that, his worldbuilding is phenomenal and his characters are unforgettable.

  • What books are you reading at the moment?
  • I am rereading Malazan Book of the Fallen. Just started the fourth book, House of Chains.

The start of this book is the hardest for me to get through. The first couple of chapters are really boring to me and it's only after

    spoiler

Karsa is captured and Torvald Nom is introduced

that I start getting into the story. The rest of the book is phenomenal, of course.

Edit: damn, is there no other spoiler option that just greys out the words? Edit2: Geez, I only just now realize this is not c/books but c/sciencefiction. Sorry if this post doesn't belong here then, haha.

  • POLL - Will you stay on lemmy?
  • I certainly hope so. While I can't look into the future, I haven't been feeling the need to return to reddit at all, and I have hopes for Lemmy - if it continues to grow without devolving into some bot-infested, right-wing mess or something.

For now though, I'm definitely hopeful. The announcement of the Sync and Slide apps gives me a positive outlook here!

  • How do you pick books to read?
  • Recommendations from people I know. Depending on who recommends them, I'll pick them up. I also search for lists on google or "favorite book" polls/list on reddit. As long as I like the premise I'll try it. If the first book in a series is a good read, I'll continue the series, if not then I won't. And of course books from authors I already knew when I liked their books.

  • Lemmy's total users exceeds 740k today, up from 540k yesterday
  • I'm sure it will happen. There are already a few apps for Lemmy, and I know Sync is in development. I'd be rather surprised if no other apps are coming..

I don't use iOS, but I know there's an app for it, named Mlem. You could give that a shot, even if it's just a placeholder while you wait for something better. :)

  • I believe instances can block other instances entirely, right? Or have I misunderstood that? This would mean none of those bots in there could ever post in our threads here. I'm sure there will be cooperation between the instances on this.

  • Redditors after deleting their accounts with tons of karma:
  • Not as far as I know. But you could use something like PowerDeleteSuite to delete/edit all your comments before deleting your account. That's what I plan on doing. Just turn all my posts into Lemmy advertising, or just to tell Spez to go fuck himself. ;)

Edit, whoops, didn't see how old your post was. But hopefully it still helps!

  • There's a species of orchid called Dracula simia with flowers that look like a monkey's head
  • I just checked if this was real (yes I do that a lot :D) and omg, it is! I had never heard of it.

The wiki showed another version of this, called Orchis simia:

Orchis simia, commonly known as the monkey orchid, is a greyish pink to reddish species of the genus Orchis. It gets its common name from its lobed lip which mimics the general shape of a monkey's body.[1]

    Look how adorable!
