It's not so much the guy they're afraid of, they're afraid of what his actions could spur others into repeating. They're afraid of what can be done to them if multiple people follow suit. And y'know what? Maybe that's what we need now. Enough of us fearing them, and them fearing us. We don't need them. They need us. And it's well past the time to give them a reminder of that. Through force, if necessary. Preferably without bloodshed, but at this rate it doesn't look good. They've shown time and again they don't care about how many of us lose our lives to preventable circumstances, so it's time to MAKE them care again.
Follow the money—because that’s where the power is. The elites crave control, and to grow their wealth, they must control society. Any social group that could challenge their narrative is relentlessly suppressed. Reddit, once a space for free speech, has transformed into what Facebook was—a corporation that bends to their interests. Now, Reddit is just another part of the network they control.
Naw, ever see A Bug's Life where the Crickets only bully the ants because it's to distract them from realizing a thousand ants are stronger than one cricket?
DAmn, that's the version where Flick doesn't have the most amazing tits. He's still male in mine, he just has great booba, kinda like "TheyCallHimCake"
People up voting Luigi posts got banned? Yeah I'm glad I'm not on there anymore. Lemmy seems like my kind of community. Honestly feels like how reddit used to feel like. Good honest people.
They’re receiving warnings and stuff it’s been pretty fucky the last week with them so I’m out. I’ve heard of some bans for some odd stuff but I suppose some of it is hearsay. Yeah I’m really digging Lemmy it feels much more like the earlier internet where algorithms didn’t dictate everything and you can just find stuff organically
upvoting is ridiculous, but from what ive heard another site, Upvoting, in general flags your account if its new on certain subs, i think they are just expanding it to sitewide.
They are afraid of copycats, but they had months to try and stop them by just loosening their strangle hold on society. I heard another exec got offed last month in his home in Oregon. it's starting
The thing is, I think our attention spans are too cooked to be overwhelmed like that anymore. A new crisis every 20 minutes? I can get through 40+ tiktok videos in that time, and half of them will be about something they are trying to terrify with (trans rights, science defunding, bird flu, racism, palestine, the oligarchy, luigi, etc.)
The old media can't keep up, but I'm in my mid-thirties and even my old brain can handle being pulled in dozens of directions and still think about/remember Luigi, unprompted, multiple times a day.
Strangely reminds me of the Always Sunny episode where they convinced people that a water stain on their kitchen wall was the Virgin Mary, and Charlie started blessing people. On a serious note tho, portraying Luigi Mangione and Donald Trump as saviors seems equally fucked up to me.
1 is not the same, trump is treated as a god emperor by his followers, and he can do no wrong despite what he has done. the other being showing what was wrong with the society and backing why he did it.
they should... once you take everything away from somoene, they have nothing to lose... they have to be getting close to that on some of the people on the lowest rungs of surviving
As always, follow the money. Those in power want more and more money and in order to do so they need to control the population. If there is one remaining social aggregate that can foster sentiment against them, they will come down hard on it. Reddit became a corporation like Facebook and then now they want to add Reddit to the list of social aggregates they control.
i love how they were scrambling to rein in the conservative audiences of these msms, and social media early on in the manhunt of luigi. the grifters kept quiet for a whole month before they were able to reorient thier strategy to divide "left" vs right again.
It's an addiction, like being addicted to heroin. We should have done an intervention long ago, but the addicts are running the show. And capitalism seems to favor and promote the addicts so we have a feedback loop that I fear cannot be stopped.
Luigi reminded the people that we have power. We don't need to be subservient to the whims of corporate interests. We can choose to go a different way. He's in jail but millions of people who are inspired by him are roaming free, any of which could become the next Luigi, and wack some CEO who is devoid of empathy or ethics (which is all of them). Anyone could be the perpetrator, anyone could be the target.
It's like a large chunk of the USA is now part of anonymous. Expect us.
(And for anyone who binds anonymous with 4chan, you don't understand anonymous)
He’s in jail but millions of people who are inspired by him are roaming free, any of which could become the next Luigi, and wack some CEO
Let's be real, all it takes is one person struck by tragedy who no longer has anything to live for choosing to go out this way rather than going quietly. Maybe their kid was killed in the nth school shooting of the year. Maybe they're dying of cancer due to delayed treatment. Maybe they're financially ruined by medical debt. Like you said Luigi reminded people of what is possible, and there's plenty of tragedies that can be correctly attributed to the choices of the rich that happen every day
This was the straw that broke the camel's back. I remember seeing something a while back on r/coolguides about alternatives for various sites, including Lemmy as an alternative to Reddit. Today, I saw the writing on the wall and decided it was time.
The worst isn't just the Luigi thing, it's that in the future, they will most likely expand it to include any topic that the administration disapproves of.
my sentiment exactly. this is just the start of it. once they became a publicly traded company, it was no longer a social media for the people. may free speech live on ✊
Fair, I’ve always been aware of Lemmy as a paranoid schizo, but I think that I won’t want the right to use Google before they become a tool of the government to find people who speak out.
Yeah, this is one of the few (in relation to the vast amount of slop) where it's just awesome and I'm happy the tech behind it exists. It's a great combination of several people's work (original photo, edited photo, the makers of the AI itself and the person who put it all together), and it's easily one of the most flawless animated AI things I've seen. No uncanny valley like there usually is. And the coolness of Luigi portrayed like that just by itself.
Just superb on so many levels!
Kill one rich guy - complete and utter censorship.
Be a rich guy who is a twice impeached convicted felon presidential traitor making decisions resulting in casualties over the thousands - whoah, now, wouldn't want their feelings to be hurt!
Oh, I mean, power tripping moderators has always been a thing, even in my phpBB forum days when I was a teenager. I’m sure some of us older than I will have similar stories about it happening on certain BBSes. But the user base and therefore impact of that moderation going to shit was much more limited in most cases.
Vistaprint.ca is Netherlands-based and prints all kinds of marketing materials like flags, banners, stickers, flyers, business cards…
While Etsy is a US based platform, there are still small business owners from Canada who can also provide digital printing services on any kind of merch you want.
Amazon is dead to us, there is always an alternative.
Oh don't worry - Lemmy will soon have people posting child porn, gore, or other things en-masse before reporting the site/domain. I've seen it on almost every Reddit alternative since Digg shut down.
They'll run hit pieces against this place for being extremist, they'll do all sorts of nasty shit.
So first they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you.
Yeah, I mean I barely understand this federated stuff. To my understanding, each instance has their own rules. I can't post nudes on my Lemmy.ca to my understanding. I think if there's an instance that is running "afoul" then the instance I connect with can block the entire instance?
Reddit has CSAM on it. Reddit has a subreddit selling porn that is now known to feature CSAM. I along with a few others tried to kill it. We're all here now.
very gross, some of the medical subs were getting close to CP because minors were asking about "skin conditions" and they were showing thier private areas, and perverts were rushing into dming those people, i think the mods shut that down very quickly.
reddit did have problems with that in medical subs. i dont think most of them are heavily moderated(i think there is more moderation now) because minors were being contacted by perverts to show them more. and some users were shocked that there was a part-time teenager modding that NSFW sub, also theres significant amount of self-harm glorifying posts too. the 2 subs i know that are very restrictive is askdoc and dental on what you can even comment or post.
Thiel is into more evil sht now, his obssesion with AI, LOTR and spying resulted in his 2 companies palintir and anduril. Plus thiel, being gay if sht hits the fan he will flee to his compound in NZ.
and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
I don’t know if that’s evidence he was super violent. I might guess this story was made up to prevent people of business stealing power and influence from church leaders.
I think that it was more the fear in that he was the closest thing to bring so many of us together since, i don’t know, maybe ever? We can’t agree on who controls the price of eggs, but we all get fucked by healthcare and rich people!
waking people up to a class war issue which is the real ISSUE, isntead of the CULTURE WAR bs, that trump news is being pushed reddit, and i pointed this out and it was met with deaf ears.
For sure! I could tell a while ago that it was happening at Reddit (autism level recognition of slight changes). There are more and more posts from places like r/Conservative making the front page. I’m sure they have help, because they aren’t ever the highest quality posts. Not that much is on the Reddit front page these days lol
i mean yeah, generally when a society idolizes a killer, it's not for a particularly good reason (society wise)
and before anybody tries to yap about it, no there would only be a potential long term benefit to this kind of thing, slight shift in politics, maybe on the extreme end a government uprising, which will take many a year to come to fruition, and cause many years of instability. Generally these kinds of things only bring short term problems, when acted upon, humans are just animals, the salem witch trials happened for a reason, if left unchecked, this would turn into a bloodbath very quickly. Lots and lots of people would die. most of them not billionaires.
The romanticisation of a murderer is quite frankly astounding. You can agree with his side of the discussion and not be ok with murder. I don't think enough people get that.
All throughout history, murder was almost a requirement for creating a better life for people. If we hit a point in society where murder is not okay, that takes away the one final chip the working class has against the rich.
Even just looking at the health insurance side of things, we're talking about a horrible ethically misaligned industry that makes murder look like shoplifting. Ideally no murder has to happen, but it becomes a lot more grey from a utilitarian perspective and when considering the sheer scale that the world operates at.
It's because nuance in an internet discussion is very hard. All people participating must target mutual understanding and not just trying to win an argument.
You're not wrong, but you're getting down voted... Lemmy, you crazy.
Everyone is allowed an opinion.
In my opinion, when discussion doesn't work, action is required, and sometimes that action is wacking a dude to prove a point, or simply to remove the harm they're causing to society.
All the people praising Luigi say "this does nothing" when someone suggests an alternative to just shooting CEOs. Well you know what did nothing? Shooting Brian Thompson did nothing. United Health Group just hired a new CEO to run his division, and the real oligarchs continued looting the country even harder than before.
So no, they don't feel threatened. The top oligarchs like Elon barely even registered it. If you wanna know what they're afraid of, look at where they spend money - buying politicians and opposing attempts to regulate them and break up their monopolies. Lucky for them there is no well funded lobby for consumers, people denied health care, or even the poor and middle class generally. Tell the next Luigi to work on that if you really wanna scare these people.
The top oligarchs like Elon barely even registered it.
Elon admitted to Jon Rogan a week or two ago that he's using his kid as a human shield to protect himself from an assassin.
If you wanna know what they’re afraid of, look at where they spend money - buying politicians and opposing attempts to regulate them and break up their monopolies.
Actually, mob justice and dying actually does scare them. It's the one thing they can't just buy their way out of.
The very rising sentiment of Luigi Magione being a good man is the real threat, because before the October revolution, they realized that proletariat class was able to rise against the bourgeoisie. Is a revolution imminent? Maybe, it’s not completely certain. But we definitely will see true leftism in the rise.
One of several reasons it did nothing is that most Americans aren't interested in action. Luigi is. I don't think his is the only action or even the best, but if other people were taking action it would be a lot more effective.
they were quick to quash the news around luigi, hence the momentum kinda died down, social media and MSM worked hard to turn the tide back to culture wars.
Witty is the head CEO of UHC, and hemsely is the Chairman of the group. Witty doesnt even care, in fact hes elated because they were all being investigated for insider trading, and thompson is a threat to the whole company because he can turn on them in a dime.
Welcome to Fedi! We're building a new way to be socially. Dig in! If you can't find a particular community that you want, build it, and others will add in, too. Cheers!
Welcome. Warning u Lemmy does have a lot of tankies so be warned. If u want news with ai summaries and a free speech respecting comment section I run [email protected]
If you've replaced the functionality of reddit in your life, and reddit itself is heading in a direction you don't approve of, why continue discussing it?
For the same reason we talked on reddit about twitter and facebook all the time. It were previous systems some of us spend the better part of a decade on. It is interesting to share the impression while watching together the Vesusvius erupting and sealing Pompeii and discussing its last chapter.

People said the same thing around the API changes, and it seems more like being bitterly obsessed with an ex. Would I love to see the downfall of any major social media site? Sure, but that's different than being part of a community that is constantly discussing a website you used to go to.
