You'll have to use pto time to drown, but make sure it's approved first
  • That's part of it. Unions also made a difference for a while, until the propaganda machine convinced a bunch of people that Unions were bad. When in reality, Unions are a benefit to everyone, they protect workers from bad bosses, and historically they also protected bosses from getting the shit beat out of them by their employees.

  • Why does the media print rags to riches stories?
  • I have had someone tell me that they'd rather live in an economic system "like we have in America" where people have a chance at rags to riches, than a system "like Germany, where the social safety net means the average person doesn't have a chance at making it big."

If anyone ever tells you wealthy people are intelligent, don't believe them.

  • Melania Trump was paid for a rare appearance at a political event. It’s not clear who cut the unusual six-figure check
  • Not saying 6 figures isn't an insane amount of money for a speaking fee, but Obama was getting $400,000 in 2017. Obama is arguably a better speaker, and Melania doesn't get as many gigs as Obama did (there was a period in 2017 when he did 3 events within a couple months, which caused quite a bit of outrage on the right about his speaking fee), but 6 figures isn't all that unusual for former Presidents/First Ladies (Michelle's is reportedly around $200,000).

  • Warlord Straight Out of "Mad Max" Says Elon Musk Remotely Shut Down His Cybertruck
  • Tesla announced they can do this before they even announced the price of the cybertruck. As part of the buyer agreement, there is a stipulation that the original buyer can't sell the cybertruck until one year after getting it, and that breaking the agreement could result in the vehicle being remotely deactivated.

Honestly, that's probably what happened here, it was probably less that Elon personally deactivated it, but that it was sold to an intermediary, who then broke the Tesla agreement by "selling" it within the first year, getting it remotely disabled. Alternatively it may have just been a stolen cybertruck, which probably get it deactivated as well.

  • Who exactly is running the country? Certainly appears to be Jill Biden — and not Joe
  • It's probably okay. Even if Jill is running everything, it wouldn't be the first time in American history that a First Lady was unofficially running the country. In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson suffered a major stroke that paralyzed the left side of his body and left him bedridden for months. His wife Edith took over most of his responsibilities and it was kept secret from the public until after Wilson's death a few years after his term ended.

I'll grant you that Joe is in bad shape, but having spent some time as a caregiver for a stroke victim who lost similar function as Wilson did, Joe is easily in better shape than that.

I will admit that just because something has happened before and been fine, doesn't mean it's something we should just be okay with. But First Ladies have always had significant influence over the president, and to me, I'd rather trust Jill to run things than Joe at this point (and I voted for him).

  • Is the Gecko engine the only reason Mozilla still exists?
  • This is correct, and along side the Rust development, they also started work on a web renderer, in Rust, called Servo that at one point was considered as a possible future replacement for the Gecko engine. Around the time Rust transitioned to the Rust foundation, Servo was also pretty much abandoned by Mozilla, moved to the Linux Foundation in 2020 and then Linux Foundation Europe in 2023 where it is finally getting some steady development again. There is also some recent progress on building a browser based on Servo, although it will probably be some time before it's ready for daily use.

  • It's because they read it.
  • Jefferson was the one who rewrote it without the magic and miracles. Franklin proposed his own rewrite, but only did a chapter of Job as an proof of concept and said he didn't have the "necessary abilities" to do it himself.

  • Kamala Harris Refused to Meet With Uncommitted About Gaza — and Uncommitted Refused to Endorse Her
  • Not to be pedantic, but wouldn't making an endorsement make them no longer "Uncommitted"? Yes, Harris could and should be better on the genocide happening in Gaza, but "Uncommitted voters still uncommitted after not meeting with candidate" also isn't much of a story.

  • Side by Side
  • If the Democratic party gets to be too large of a tent, and the Republican party shrinks, eventually the Democratic party will fracture too, and we might get a real progressive party out of it.

  • Asking the hard questions rule
  • I think it mirrors the "could have not joined the army, but can't abandon now" dilemma okay. Like, it's not great, but if your choices really affected the outcome, it would be easier to miss the point and say you'd be one of the "good ones" in war who always makes the right decisions - even though disobeying orders would also get you in trouble.

It's not great as a game, but as an interactive art piece I think it's okay. Unfortunately it was sold as a game, so I understand why many people hated it.

  • There's a rule banning gas water heaters in 2027
  • Those are local outages due to trees causing downed lines, squirrels getting into transformers, motor vehicle accidents, etc. They aren't the same as the blackouts like you get from an overloaded or strained power grid like they have in Texas.

  • Walk-thru
  • I just hand them my debit card inside and tell them what I want. Usually with an apology that I haven't filled out a deposit/withdrawal form. Most of the time the teller will say it's fine and the same amount of work for them either way. I'm sure it depends on the bank or branch, and I personally try to avoid the bigger banks like Bank of America or Chase just because their fees are so much higher and I hear their service is worse, so that's probably a factor as well.

  • Cellphone Bans in Schools? NYC Is ‘Not There Yet,’ Mayor Says
  • For all the potential mental health benefits of banning cell phones, we should probably focus on stopping school shootings first. Until we've done that, I'm more likely to believe that cell phone bans are more about politicians not wanting to hear voicemails from dead kids telling their parents they love them one last time, than anything being done for the wellbeing of students.

  • Gamescom Date Reveal Trailer - Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
  • I want to like this, but some of that mocap animation looks really off. Especially in those scenes with the idol and where indie is slamming down that stone. Looks like the mocap actor was holding back and that the idol weighs less than it should. It's probably going to be okay, but after the excellent mocap work in games like God of War, where the animation really conveys a sense of weight, and in comparison to the Indiana Jones films this looks a bit floaty and like Indie is pulling his punches.

  • 'Let's Go!' Top Economist Applauds as Harris Signals Support for Billionaires Tax
  • I'm hoping she's mostly just playing soft on Israel for now is to avoid more criticism of being antisemitic. When Israel started their attempted genocide, most of the Biden administration was silent on it, and we didn't hear or see anything from Harris, when she did eventually have a public appearance about a month later, she was pretty much the first person in the administration to say anything remotely pro-peace.

I'm probably just huffing copium but I hope she's just taking AIPAC's money (not sure if they are giving her any, but better in her hands than theirs) and getting through the election, and then going to go full prosecutor on Israel/Netanyahu.
