The overworked IT person who just happened to quit his job on 18 July 2024
  • I personally get nervous when any software wants to mess with drivers unless it's graphic drivers.

For work we don't plan on using cloud strike. We needed to get everything up asap and the os allowed us to do so quickly. Seemingly unrelated systems and Azure was all down for quite some time.

  • This latest debacle is making my department move from windows to Linux. We were already planning it very slowly but then everything crashed at the same time...and all our other services worked except the ones on windows boxes. We can't afford downtime so it was decided.

What could be done to make PeerTube more popular?
  • that might be me. Ive been pushing as much as possible on /c/video peertube stuff. Whenever I find it.

One of the best and worst things about peertube is that the suggested videos side of things that youtube has isnt a thing. You can search based on hashtags but getting the same fix like youtube is very hard. Its also good in that most creators that are on their are really interesting/dedicated to their craft. And copyright isnt really a thing on peertube, so music/videos/etc....are a LOT better. At least for a time.

This is probably the video? https://lemmy.world/post/15969866?scrollToComments=true

You're Being Lied To. The EV Market Hasn't 'Stalled'
  • I've seen some shops in LA that claim to take certain car models and turn them into evs. It's a long shot but I'm taking a look when my car dies or we need another car.

My civic will probably last another decade given how cheap the parts are and reliable the car is.

What are your experiences with mono repos?
  • Most companies will never have a monorepo at the level of these bigger companies. So I personally don't think most people need to worry about the limitations of github/lab as platforms.

However if you happen to be having those kinds of issues, I think looking at what the big companies are doing and/or starting to split things up makes sense.

There's also alternatives with custom ci jobs within non GitHub/lab within the git universe that may help out with those sorts of operations. I know actions still feel very beta in some toolsets so it may be easier/more useful to run your own arch. I've been enjoying forgeo/gitea for example, but it's not like you can't do the same with girlab runners or GitHub enterprise. Depends on use case.

  • California man creates AI chatbot to waste the time of telemarketers
  • Most "AI" is just a series of if/then statements and/or LLMs that try to predict the next word.

It was part of my research back in college so its crazy what companies actually say AI is. Im probably preaching to the choir around here but man it grinds my gears.

  • California man creates AI chatbot to waste the time of telemarketers
  • Just found the site: https://jollyrogertelephone.com/

I swear im not getting any money from this company, I just really like the idea. I wonder how it differentiates between a "good" number and a "bad" one? ATM I just use multiple phone numbers for services so the spammers cant hit my main line.

Its a bit old, but I kinda love the idea. This is what LLMs should be used for.
