Truth is, these big companies don't care about you. Or your opinion. You can threaten them about "switching to Linux", but these companies will think twice and say:
if we take this complaint seriously, we might retain one (1) customer, which makes us $1000 in the future
if we follow Trump, we might get some favorable legislation, which makes us $10000000
There is a better chance that user reporting for this will be disabled more so than it is that this would make a difference. You know that right?
If this latest drama with Apple Maps (and Google Maps) is what pushes someone over the edge to looking for more user respecting options then the people further gone than I would really be comfortable getting used to. Both companies regularly do much more than should do more to turn you off.
If you want to go even further, you can grab StreetComplete and have fun wandering your neighborhood while contributing to OpenStreetMap by answering questions for things like business hours, road widths, road materials, etc. Unfortunately, it seems to be android only at the moment and I'm not sure if there's an iOS alternative.
as i understand it, there's tons and thousands of datasets available about public infrastructure, but for some bizarre reason, StreetComplete asks us to fill in that information by hand? How stupid is that? only to make a ton of errors while manually copying in that information.
Google and Apple have different versions of maps depending on what your country recognizes.
For example, it will shows territories claimed by China as part of China for Chinese IP addresses, but may show them as independent territories for other countries that recognize them as such.
lol good luck with that.
Did you ever think maybe the reason he's making all these ridiculous changes, is to keep the peanuts busy, while he slashes spending?
Cause it seems to be working.
Nope. These people are going to continue to froth at the mouth with every tiny little comment and joke Trump makes for the next 4 years just like they did for the last 8 years.
I didn't believe TDS was a real thing until I saw it happen to my own family. Normal, logical people turn into obsessed psychos whenever Trump is even mentioned in passing.
is exactly what apple will do with these complaints
you could just as well burn your money or drive your car into a tree, as a form of protest. it's a waste, either of time, money, or energy, but nothing is achieved that way.
Now where the hell did I say "do nothing". Hilarious that liberals' idea of "doing something" is "put a comment into Apple complaints that they can easily not even look at".
What difference does this make? Some lower level employee will see this, roll his eyes, and then continue on with his day.
Beyond this, do you think Apple can actually take any other position than aligning with fascism? That was always going to happen. They literally can't help but align with fascism- this is the culmination of late stage capitalism.
It's like politely asking a dog not to salivate when it sees a steak in front of it.
You're not gonna get anywhere and you're just wasting time.
Also on a side note- you should switch to Linux because you should take charge of your own hardware and learn how it works before it's taken away from you. You should do it for open source and for freedom. Not threaten to do something because a company is doing company things.

you push back every step of the way. that's how you deal with it. Apple maps reporting getting shut down for this is a sign that someone at a higher level took notice and it will have feedback to even higher leadership. So yes, this is feedback, even if companies do company things, it's also sending a signal that on the long run their company things might be better off aligning with the users. Is this gonna make any difference on its own? Nope, but a million of things like this may.
Honestly - this is from a playbook used by every autocratic administration: “Take the attention away from the more important things”. Seen it in EU constantly: Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, etc.
So sure, report it, but be aware this is a charade.
yup. at this point the bullshit coming out of trump's mouth is the least concerning thing in this admin. the heavy lifting is done by the heritage foundation and doge
Didn't get your reference to Hungary etc. Do you mean they are annoying but don't really matter in the overall scheme, or that similar tactics are used there?
Its about tactics - countries with autocratic leaders usually employ similar tactics where they e.g.
make a big change to some segment of law (more/less important - but has to be something that hits everyone or doesn’t make sense), so the media reports on that, then make changes to it again (due to public pressure), so that media and population gets these topics in waves, just so they make everyone blind to their corruption games they play in the background,
or they use some politician from their party/coalition to stir the pot in their ministry they lead by playing drama queens by accusing the opposition of corruption,
or they leave a “less important” political role to a crazy person, they do stupid shit that takes years to fix and you essentially have constant drama and info taking away everyones attention from the important stuff.
etc etc
But you get the point - calling it Gulf of America essentially gives you free patriotic bonus points from your followers and also makes your opposition / people invest in something that is, in the end, total waste of time (time which could be used for something else, like educating these populist/autocratic/however you call it tactics to everyone, so that your average Joe doesn’t get fooled by it so easily).
I can't be the only one who feels like this is the absolute lowest priority of dumb shit to resist the regime over. It's just filler. Another thing he is doing to flood the zone. But one that really doesn't hurt anything. It's a distraction. Ignore it and focus on the actual damage he is doing.
As someone from the outside, you wouldn't even see the US specific naming. If complaining in a bug report about the fact and threatening to abandon the platform in favour of Linux is all you can do, man, don't bother xD.
The administration seems weak to business interest and with Apple having over a trillion dollar market value…customers being mad at them could actually somehow trickle back to Trump admin? It’s a drop in the ocean, I know. Just trying to look at it optimistically
To be fair, the entire history of humanity is full of exactly that. These are mostly just aimed at and recognized by the US. Same as Russia currently renaming occupied villages. Nobody else recognizes those, it’s just not that special or important at this point, with all of the other shit going on.
Ultimately, the names of places change. All the time. And will continue to change. It’s just what we do as humans. Somebody uses force and swings their dick around and locally others have to either accept it, silently or whining, or punch the fucker. Elsewhere people fight similar fights and care very little about the other dickswingers far away.
hmm I wondered this too. I have a ton of starred places as well as some custom lists. I wasn't able to find anything to do it, but would also be interested in this.
I hope it becomes usable. If they hold there promise. Linux Wayland apps could be run through emulation layer, FreeBSD apps would run native and many MacOS apps should work out of the box.
I can't understand would it even have the part in parentheses in Europe. Think how silly it would look if every location had the regional name for every nearby country added in parentheses after the primary global name. It would be a mess.
Eg:
Germany (Deutschland, Allemagne, Niemcy, Germania, Saksa, <etc>)
Feels to me like special rules Apple has to stroke special fascist egos.
But maybe its not Apple and this is a name set by your local governance. You mind if I ask what country Apple maps you're looking at?
Shout out to the menial workers at Apple Maps who are going to have a crap day at work tomorrow because of the thing their boss made them do, so they don't get fired and replaced by someone else who would do it.
You should abandon Apple for Linux anyways. Apple doesn't care about you, your privacy, or anything but them making more money, from you. This has been proven time and time again by evidence and whistleblowers.
Irrelevant: Scared me for a sec, thought I had an IP leak as I VPN to Switzerland but remembered I explicitly allowed Maps to be routed through a US VPN.
Was it decreed by an absolute narcissist for no reason other than the kind of blatant arrogance Americans are notorious for? Absolutely.
Was it also completely legal? As far as I can tell. It's not really these companies' place to resist map name changes, it's the citizens' and our representatives'.
Does it have anything at all to do with fascism? No.
All he can dictate is what official American maps call it. But he can't make everyone else rename it, Apple and Google did not need to rename it they could have ignored him who has no legal power to do anything to them but they are kissing his bronzed arse so of course they did.
Who has the authority to dictate what things should be called on a map if not the government? Tech companies are supposed to make these decisions? If they did nothing, that would be in defiance of the government, and most companies don't want to be involved in politics at all, regardless of who the President is.
At the same time it's the map's job to describe the world. Even for something like nation states where there's an official name, the map uses the common name. Our maps say France, not French Republic.
Changing the displayed name for a body of water shared by several nations doesn't make much sense, especially when the common name has yet to follow.
At least that's from the perspective of one of the goals the map ostensibly wants to serve.

Most of the things Traitorapist Trump does is a desperate plea for your attention. Remember that 1 day immigration "crackdown"? He just wanted your unneccessary attention for that one particular day. If finding illegals was that easy they would have already been caught by Biden. He will do another one, but it will be on a random day that Trump is worried you aren't paying him enough attention. There is no master plan on immigration, just a bunch of 1 day stunts. You can also safely ignore everything Trump says about annexing Canada, Greenland, and Gaza.
Ignore all Trump's meaningless nonsense and 1 day stunts. Instead of doing that, pay attention to his 2 big related things which are his (1) Enshitification Push and his (2) Fascism Push. Fascism involves Enshitification, but his Enshitification Push goes beyond Fascism and includes things like trying to normalize corruption, promote incompetence, and hugely degrade the quality of government. Somebody needs to track every single one of the specific details of those things. But here is what we do NOT need to do: don't fall into Trump's narcissism web and think that just because Trump says some stupid thing every day you need to pay attention to him every day. On most days you do not.
