What is something you thought you knew your whole life and only just recently found out you were wrong the whole time?
  • The way we use our brain. I thought that everybody's brain was used similarly to hire I use mine. But I'm fact everybody did it differently.

For instance, some people use more of their visual cortex to do maths, and assign colors to different numbers. For some maths takes place more in the language part, or timekeeping part.

Richard Feynman did some experimenting with this: https://youtu.be/lr8sVailoLw ( from 2.08)

But it makes sense, in school nobody tells you how to use your brain, they just give assignments and look at the outcome, also you don't really control how your brain works, you can train it to do some things more efficient, but you can't learn to do maths in your visual cortex.

After boots on the ground comment, French PM doubles down: 'Putins troops are already in our country', pointing at Le Pen

www.lemonde.fr French PM suggests 'Putin's troops are already in our country,' pointing at Le Pen

Heated exchanges broke out in Parliament between Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and far-right leader Marine Le Pen, following Emmanuel Macron's statement that sending Western troops to Ukraine should 'not be ruled out.'

French PM suggests 'Putin's troops are already in our country,' pointing at Le Pen

    >By raising for the first time the idea of sending troops to Ukraine, the French leader "has taken a further step toward belligerence," blasted his rival Marine Le Pen, of the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party. She accused him of "posing an existential risk to 70 million French people, and more particularly to our armed forces already deployed in Eastern Europe."

    >"You've been waiting for the first opportunity to remind people of your true loyalties [and] "show your true colors," retorted Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who had left the Paris Agricultural Show to attend the verbal joust. "When you read the investigations that are being carried out, [such as one published by the Washington Post on December 30, showing the RN's persistent links with Moscow], you have to wonder whether Vladimir Putin's troops aren't already in our country," he continued. "I'm talking about you and your troops, Ms. Le Pen."

Watching sports is better without live spectators ('fans')

During Covid lots of sorts were broadcast without any spectators. I found that it increased my viewing pleasure. No screaming crowds trying to make the most noise with drums (soccer), no altercations, no people throwing things or making annoying noices (MMA), no crazy people next to the road pushing cyclists.

Just the people doing the sport, I can hear them shout, swear and get punched. I can see bike racing without fear a crazy fan will jump in front of the pack for a photo for their grandma.

I don't need an audience to get hyped or to distract everybody with jeers and racist shouting. For me the fans are the worst part of the sport. I don't enjoy watching them, I want to see the athletes doing their thing.

Ik denk een belangrijk rapport wat duidelijk een vinger wijst naar het structurele probleem. Helaas wat weinig media-aandacht, voor een topic dat zo belangrijk is.

A very weird problem with a link that turns nsfw for no explainable reason

    lemmy.world Let's talk emulators this week. - Lemmy.world

Previously on Lemmy: - Buying Guide: Low End [https://lemmy.world/post/4846313] - Buying Guide: Midrange [https://lemmy.world/post/4021671] - Buying Guide: High End [https://lemmy.world/post/5720634] Past Discussions: - iPhones [https://lemmy.world/post/3666684] - Repairability/Build Quality [https:...

In this thread, the second link 'midrange models' somehow links to a NSFW 'hot wife in kitchen' link.

Look at my posts in the comment chain. I first thought it was an error by the poster, but the source is legit, but even when I copy the source connect still servers me the hot wife in the kitchen.

Now I found this only amusing and strange, but it could really do harm for people in a work environment.

Maybe some more people can chime in to see if the error is reproducible?

    Vulkan vs Dx11

Hi there! Just seeing if other people have the same issue that I have.

My i7 Geforce gtx 1650 laptop does play the game, but it feels a bit slow whenin dx11, a bit like theres a delay, or if my chars are moving through denser air.

If I switch to Vulkan the performance is way better and way more snappy. Only thing is that it crashes every time I get into a dialog.

So I am wondering if others do have the same problem, or have some insights. TYVM!
