Yea, for these scenarios I'd recommend posting in the more generalized versions like [email protected] and tag it with something like [Question] and then maybe cross-post it to the actual [email protected] to hopefully generate some traffic in the future
Lemmy is still a bit small to have a bunch of hyper-focused comms like Reddit, but maybe some day!
Yeah I left reddit when the API thing stopped me using sync. It was the final straw. Like you, I'd been involved for over ten years, but sometimes you gotta move on. I missed some subs, and Lemmy is definitely less active - but I waste less time here than I did on reddit and that's a bonus.
The biggest thing I miss from Reddit is how up to date the news on the front page was. Having said that, they changed the algorithm and it's been dogshit for years anyway. I dont miss Reddit at all, been here for over a year.
Welcome aboard! I see you signed up to LW, here the worst of the "Tankie Triad" has been defederated from (hexbear and lemmygrad) though lemmy.ml is still fed'd so beware.
Is that seriously how you greet new people? Literally the first thing you are saying is about sowing division. "Watch out for the boggieman instance!" How about you just give it a rest.
I left Reddit during APIGate and I tried lemme and it was full of racist nastiness so I closed my account and recently also left all meta apps and drasticallyreduced tiktok, and thought I might come check out how things are going and it's nice and cozy here now, think I will stay. Been off of x for the better part of 3 years.
I don't remember, sadly. It was like a year and a half ago, and I opened the app and saw some had made a post on the home page that was just the N word over and over so I closed the website (I was on desktop) and figured I would let it mature for a bit.
Thanks! What are the least political meme communities I can join? Politics has seeped into just about every subreddit and I need a break. I see in "all" here that there's also a lot of politics around here in the meme instances
So did I but be careful or you well also get swept up by the brainwashing here, buying a Pixel to run grapheneos, installing Linux on everything, buy privacy respecting email services, VPN and paranoid of everything. BTW I use NixOS and I am still mostly sane.
Its true, this place is a fucked up linux echo chamber.
After joining and after a lot of tests turns out distros like fedora and mint are literally what people want from steamOS.
I assume they are taking about the reddit post attached. Not exactly an exodus like last time but I would imagine at least a few made it here after reading it.
Agreed. I highly recommend choosing a different instance for your account.
The mods on [email protected] and other communities routinely ban posters that don’t violate the rules, just because they don’t like their political opinion.
See [email protected] for some discussion around mods‘ abuse of power.
If anyone's wondering what you should do first, the first thing you should do is block hexbear, and the next thing you should do is join any instance other than lemmy.ml. lemmy.world is a good choice, but there's probably one you'll like better.
If you want to know the most trans-friendly instance, it's lemmy.blahaj.zone. There are people who will tell you it's Hexbear. Those people are liars.
Enforcement without exception of a rule that was created to protect a marginalized group is not "cray cray", nevermind the use of ableist language there.
The 196 on world is the original mods, who were unhappy with Ada's enforcement of the rules on her server which she owns and decided that because of this they would migrate their community without consulting their members to .world, an instance which is known in the wider community to have moderation issues such as unfair or inconsistent application of rules (see /c/yepowertrippinbastards on Lemmy.dbzer0 for examples).
The now 2 other 196 comms on blahaj are comprised of the original community's members, now fractured into two groups. /C/onehundredninetysix was made while /c/196 was still privated by the original moderators.
Nothing new in particular. People are sick of power tripping mods. Also people that joined Reddit many years ago are sad to see it's turned into something else in many ways.
I'm brand new here, I am over Reddit as I just got banned for "threatening violence". I appealed to no avail. I got angry regarding a post about an adult purposely running down a 12 year old. I expressed what I "would feel like doing" to that driver if he knocked one of my sons over on purpose. I didn't actually threaten a real person, it was based on a hypothetical scenario.
But no apparently that's threatening violence.
So yeah, I'm here.
A post of an article calling for federated social media got big. A comment on said post pointing to Lemmy got 100s of upvotes. Reddit mods deleted the comment.
I saw a mention of Lemmy on a random thread in r/politics so I'm tentatively having a poke about, since I've already tried to quit Reddit once (for Tumblr - it didn't stick). I remember forums pre centralised internet, is it something like that?
Yes, you can consider it like a web forum but with the default sort set to "new post" not "new comment" as is done on Reddit. This tends to favour new content over longer discussion, although you'll get active threads like this quite often.
And thank you for choosing feddit.uk, I hope you enjoy your time with us and if you have any other questions then fire away.
Think of it more like email addresses. Know how a Gmail account can send email to an iCloud account just fine, and both display the same content? Same basic concept. You can have [account]@domain1.com and [account]@domain2.com, and they’re entirely separate accounts. Even if they have the same username, they’re on different instances.
Federation refers to how the instances share data with each other. One of the largest things to look for is what instances your instance federates with, because that will determine what kinds of users you end up interacting with.
Ahh, okay, so if I wanted to go just looking at a specific subject it might be better to make a second account and join another instance, and keep up two accounts?
Ah, thank you! I downloaded an app first, since I primarily use my phone for everything and apps are just easier. I think the one I'm using is called Boost? It is less confusing than I was worried it might be :)
A bit between a forum and reddit. You don't have to sneak away to subreddit, just comment wherever and whenever. There's usually some good interaction. Much smaller places than reddit and less monkeying with comments and votes and such.
If you aren't a Marxist-Leninist, you might wanna stay away from the big 3 Marxist-Leninist (aka: Tankie) instances [lemmygrad.ml, hexbear.net, lemmy.ml]
Agreed, also if you're not a Neoliberal I would stay away from World (or if you're Queer, a minority, or someone who isnt comfortable with seeing bigotry).
Wanted to say this too. It's Lemmy's biggest problem and keeps putting me off. I don't recommend Lemmy to people in person anymore because of them. I don't know if I would be more disturbed if they're mostly state actors astroturfing or just deeply unwell real people
I know right, ML Tankies are so much worse than fascist capitalist Nazi's, they sure spoil everything amirite (watches a capitalist do a nazi salute at a presidential inauguration). Lets continue to ignore politics and see where this goes.
Oh don't insult marxists leninists like that. I guess what you really mean is that those instances are for russia/china simps or nationalists. There's nothing marxist about their views.
Just recommend the biggest instance that isn't federated with them. Anyone got a list?
I do think it's valuable to recommend the bigger instances. If they're on a big instance, they don't have to worry about federation at all at first. It takes no effort to slowly learn about federation, and later they have the option to move to a smaller instance.
This lemmy.zip person didn't have a good onboarding experience. @[email protected] maybe?
That’s actually me. I simply didn’t want to carry over that username but I guess I should claim it too. Lol
Yeah, I originally joined Lemmy during the first Reddit exodus. Then, I squirreled and did not spend the necessary time to learn much about it. However, this go around I’m here and I’m serious about learning it and using Reddit much much less (in hopes to abandoning it eventually).
Some folks helped me to find apps. I’m using Avelon and I really like it. It makes figuring Lemmy out MUCH EASIER than simply bookmarking.
infosec.pub [Users 4,240 total; 325 / month] (this also defeds lemmy.ml, which the ones above doesn't do, but this is kinda small)
Edit: Also, if someone make an account on a small instance and just search and subscribe to everything, then it would make sure the communities are synched. (someone please go do that)
Reddit mods have less power to remove unwanted speech than Lemmy admins do. If you are upset because mods would not let you say something in their communities, Lemmy is not going to be more accommodating for that.
Howso? The Fediverse literally gives you the option to choose from among several different instances. It's trivial to migrate to an instance you find better suited to you, if you don't like this one.
Id like to point out there are also some really good mobile apps for lemmy. I use sync for lemmy. Hopefully others will recommend there favorites. There are quite a few good ones!
Tankies almost made me quit day one until I learned what instances were and how to block them. With Hexbear and .ml gone from my feed, Lemmy is a lot more normal.
An article titled "Decentralized Social Media Is the Only Alternative to the Tech Oligarchy" hit the front page of r/technology and the top comment mentioned lemmy as a reddit alternative. Although the comment was removed when the OP later edited it to include a direct link to join-lemmy.org. Which probably indicates those mods have automod configured to automatically remove links to that site. But the good news is, it still got a lot of attention. It'll be interesting to see if any instance admins will be able to verify an uptick in account registrations over the next few days.
Hey newbies! Confused about how it all works? Don't worry, you'll get used to the confusion. Also, check out [email protected] for a good niche community.
Damn I've been here this whole time and I'm still not subscribed to that community. Nice one!
It actually is true that it takes time to find your way around the fediverse. But that's also kind of nice because it means there's always cool new communities to find. A lot of my current favorite communities are ones I didn't find until after being here for over a year.
I should take the time to make a list of some of the hidden gems and sticky it somewhere.
If anyone is looking for an unpopularopinion sub here, check out opinionhavers which I'm trying to get going.
There is also this one but mods took it offline for a while to protest something or other, so I figure it's good to have alternatives. The mod drama over there if you care.
It was shut down for around a week to a week and a half, and now it's back. That's what I meant.
The point was: now that it's been shown that the mod is willing to take the sub offline in protest of various stuff, maybe it would be good to support an alternative as well so eggs can be in several baskets instead of just one.
