I kept saying this would happen. Citizens will be detained and eventually probably deported. Because Trump literally believes that people can just have their citizenship taken away from them on a whim.
Yep, me too all because they were brown. Racism was always the point of Trump deportation stick. And fucking mega base is loving it. We can thank those who set at the election and the never Harris crowd for now all stuck in this hellhole. Except for FlyingSquid who luckily was able to escape. But fucking people had just voted he would had to escape which probably wasn't easy.
It is not easy, but it is something I was lucky to be able to do. Right now, no job, my savings are running out, my wife (a librarian, risking imprisonment) is still stuck in the U.S., and if I don't find anything in a couple of months, what I do have saved up will be gone and I don't know what we'll do.
But yeah, a lot of people will be worse off than us and I'm sorry.
It's already happened in Arizona before. It's why Joe Arpaio was convicted -- contempt for continuing to profile and round up immigrants after a court told him to stop. Pardoned by Trump.
And even after all that and tent cities, he ran for office again. Didn’t win but the fact he was even allowed to try again is a major flaw in the system
I'm white and hang out with mostly white people who don't understand how scary this is.
I ask them if they can prove to me - right now - that they're a citizen. Lots of them legitimately think a Driver's License is enough.
I explain that it is not proof of citizenship and that lots of people have licenses without being a citizen. So if they were brown, they might be arrested based on their lack of papers.
And once arrested and sent to a camp, your ability to produce any documentation you may have diminishes to almost nothing.
Demand your white friends show them their green card or birth certificate.
If you think that's a joke, ask around. I've been asked that twice in my life. But because I'm not Default American™, I have to prove a lot harder that I was born here.
My cousin and his wife adopted their son from Guatemala. Great kid, growing up to become an admirable adult. They're right-wing Trump supporters in the state of Florida. I know they voted for this shit, and probably don't conceive of the idea this could ever harm THEIR son. But all it takes is the fact that he doesn't look American enough to some racist in a uniform for him to get snatched up in a sweep. Really hope he doesn't face this kind of harassment, but now its become much more likely.
The accelerationist fucks can all get fucked. We told you spreading anti-democratic sentiment and allowing those doing so to lie on social media would lead to shit like this but no, we had to be told we love genocide and be otherwise dismissed. We were fucking right and any rational, un brainwashed person could see it.
Inb4 "oh you can't allow any criticism of Democrats. Duopoly, fascist. GeNoCiDe bLuE mAgA blahhh".
Yeah we all can and certainly should be unloading criticism on democrats but when you're headed to a country-ending election you are an irresponsible idiot if you can't do it with the caveat that it's extremely important to vote against trump. We're reaping what these idiots sowed and it probably will mostly hurt society's most vulnerable.
Oh they already got ahead on that -- I read "the democrats platform sucks so no wonder [fascism isn't a big deal]" kind of shit for months before the election
They were saying this before the election, too: "Biden/Kamala are not perfect human beings, so I'm morally superior by not voting Democratic or voting for a useless third party! Look at meeeeee, I'm so very sparkly and special!"
Deleted what I had written in this comment. It's just not worth it to invest energy going over this again. America is fucked and that especially includes people like me. The trans community is already facing widespread institutional violence like we never have before. Thanks to the rise of fascism. I wholeheartedly reject the need to blame a minority group for the problem and not those in power who actually ran on conservative pro-colonist ideology. This reality was arrived at with a Democrat in power. Electoralism doesn't work.
Shooting a dog is nothing compared to shooting a person, so it's no problem if I shoot a dog.
This is the stupidest take I've ever fucking heard.
People don't support hard progressives because they associate them with brain dead ideas like this. You're part of the problem you hate. You're just as bad as the fucking nazis because you're helping their cause. And oh sure, it's not bad now, but that's what Germans said when those assholes were just starting to get moving.
Pull your head out of your ass and think in practicalities. Idealism should guide direction, but practicality should drive action towards that direction.
And I know this isn't going to convince you. This is for the third parties reading this conversation. Don't be like this asshole.
Edit: and fuck, if you didn't now the term accelerationism before forming this kind of opinion, you truly have no fucking idea what you're talking about. Go read some shit
Edit edit: and I think you still don't understand what accelerationism means because it makes no sense in the context of climate change, which you've mentioned is a larger concern. Unless you're making the assumption that at any arbitrary point climate change is reversible, which would also be blatantly uninformed. Fuck, I hope you're not old enough to vote
When mass deportations started under Hoover it was common that American citizens were swept up and sent to the Southern border of Mexico. Many of them were children who would only learn late in life that they were US citizens. This continued through Eisenhower's presidency.
Yeah I'm a white dude and back when I had long hair and didn't understand civil rights I got illegally detained dozens of times. Profiling is real, and obviously POC understand this. But also, police have no respect for the constitution or actual rule of law and civil rights. Most of my worst experiences were from police forces in cities mostly ran by authoritarian neolibs.
What, you mean the racist people aren't doing a great job verifying which brown people they are supposed to be looking for, and are just grabbing anyone? Shocking...well not that shocking.
“We now know that Navajo people and enrolled members of other tribes are being detained in Phoenix and other cities by ICE,” Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley said during a committee meeting on Thursday. “The reports that we have received indicate that we need to coordinate an operation or some type of response to help our enrolled tribal members here on the Navajo Nation.”
On Thursday, Navajo tribal leaders reported that they have received calls and text messages from Navajo people living in urban areas who have been stopped, questioned or detained by ICE.
...
State Sen. Theresa Hatathlie joined the committee meeting virtually and shared her report and concerns in Navajo. Hatathlie represents the Legislative District 6, which encompasses the Navajo Nation.
Hatathlie reported to the Council that she received a call about a case involving eight Navajo citizens who were detained for hours with no cell phones or ability to contact their families or tribes.
So, multiple elected officials are independently saying in public they've received multiple reports of this happening, one is saying he hasn't been able to speak to anyone who was detained or get any information out of ICE about what they've done. Since ICE and other federal agencies will lie about this stuff there are going to be a lot of situations where we can't verify exactly what was done to whom right away.
