So some of you may remember my recent trials and tribulations with my toxic boss who wanted me to fire an employee for no valid reason. Well I have been looking for a new job and have a first round interview tomorrow for an amazing job with an amazing company and I just want people to pray for me. I'm afraid it won't work out and I'm going to be stuck in my shitty hell hole job.
Edit: Thank you for the kind words and encouragement everysmurf
I've been waiting for this to go live to get back about how you can help. This is one way.
https://transjustice.org.au/
Support the trans justice project. I suggest this as they seem really well organised and this project is happening now.
You could also suggest the company you work for do inclusivity training, Transgender Victoria offer what I understand to the best of this.
https://tgv.org.au/training
Of course, there are many organisations you can donate to or volunteer with who support and or advocate for trans, gender diverse, non binary and intersex people. As well as the two above organisations, there is
All of these utilise skills from a huge range of fields so pretty much anything you can do they can use. There are more too, but these are the one's I can vouch for. Unfortunately queer orgs are low on the list of many government support initiatives so many of these organisations really do need money and or volunteers to continue their work. I volunteer a couple of afternoons a week, the odd Saturday and then a little bit every day for my role. I suggest you support these organisations as working alone can be challenging and they know what they're doing. Apart from that, keep up the anti-discriminatory language vibe here, it's a big deal for me personally to feel supported and safe here. Mental health outcomes are poor for a lot of trans people and I have to actively work on mine by only living in safe spaces. We all ultimately have to advocate for ourselves too. Some people have a lot less capacity for that than I do though and this outlet here forms part of that capacity. <3
Thanks Nath, Rusty and the whole DT family. Like, a whole lot!!! <3
EDIT< A single tear just ran down my cheek and under my chin after I posted this. I'm ok!
Oh yeah, see what I mean about the downvotes? ffs.
lmao. it's all my posts now. wow. someone is reading, well done, you have no idea about the level of persistence I'm capable of.
Have read this. I was particularly heartened by the statement on that TransJustice site:
We have been totally overwhelmed by the number of responses to our survey on experiences of anti-trans hate in Australia. We will provide more information in time but wanted to thank everyone for the support this project has received.
This backs up what I was saying: You are surrounded by people who support you.
As to the downvoter: I did make an attempt at that. The database under the hood of Lemmy is overwhelming. Basically, it contains all the federated content. If a single aussie.zone user subscribes to a community on another instance, then that content is in the database. The example posted in the other thread doesn't work for us: It shows who has upvoted/downvoted a single thread. But that's not what we want to do in your case. I need to search comment tables for posts you have been in and then cross-reference the comment_like table for postid, userid and commentid.
I'm not a Database admin by trade, I'm ok at database stuff, but this is some complicated bit of table join logic. It might be beyond me, but I haven't given up, yet.
Yep. I bought my house did all the paperwork etc, completely stoned to the eyeballs. It was to resist the feeling of growing up. Getting sober and off weed makes me feel more like an adult, struggling to pay bills while trying to affirm my gender hmmm, feels like adulting. Seeing a therapist, hmmmm, undecided on that one. I could have used one as a kid.
On the way home tonight, I glanced at a bus stop that had one of the new gas ads - the "Australian Gas is keeping the country running" ones. Someone had added in black marker "away from its responsibilities" under the printed text.
Nice to see that the BUGA UP impulse has not died out yet.
The employment trainer is showing a YT video explaining how to make a table in Word, including how to convert the data into rows and columns.
This is very good for some people, but I want to rip my ears off, spoon out my eyes, and throw them at my monitor. My brains are melting out of my ears, I was privileged to learn how to do this in highschool in the 2000s.
Edit: JUST USE EXCEL 😭😭😭
Editedit: also not the trainers fault, Workforce gives them a curriculum to follow and cover.
Definitely the case, the trainer said as much and apologised to those of us who already know how to use those programs effectively. She didn't have to apologise lol Workforce gives them the curriculum, they dont really get to choose which vids to show, etc.
It sucks that they won't give you recognition for prior learning. When I was retrenched during GFC I had to go in there and learn how to turn a computer on, how to log in to windows, how to create folders and drag-and-drop files, how to write a resume, and they expected me to put all those "skills" on my resume.
I pointed out that these are basic skills in every office job; should I also list knowledge of use of photocopier, how to change paper in photocopier, how to plug accessories into usb, how to operate hot water in tearoom? (They did concede that I was outside of their target audience and just gave me a pass for the whole course).
One of my friends started at my workplace. We work in an open office area and because of that I bought over ear earphones. It's generally accepted that when someone is wearing them they're trying to work.
My friend keeps coming over for a chat. Like not just a short one she fully sits down next to me.
I'm on a deadline so I think I'll just be straightforward and tell her that if my headphones are on I don't want a chat. Seems reasonable but I hate having these kinds of conversations...
If nothing else view the interviews as a chance to hone/sharpen that skill - that can be a tricky hurdle for some people. Just remember that an interview is as much for you as it is for them. Who knows, there might be something worthwhile after all.
Truth, I have spent my morning writing my STAR answers in a concise and clear manner, and brushing up on interview skills for both f2f and video. Hopefully this round of applications and my preparing result in a job. Would love to make more than the $650 a ft I get from c-link hahah
I went to Coles to exchange money for life and I put my card in and no prompts. So I tried it again and no prompts. So I proceeded to put my pin in and the cunt beeped at me. Of course there's no attendant so I called over the top of a queue of people "scuse. Which way do I put my card in?". I get told. I try it again and it works.
I think I just confirmed to the 8 senior citz that were lining up that indeed technology does suck because they all turned to look at me.
Apparently you don't actually have to insert the card - just hold it over the screen. Then do the PIN thing if needed. That's what I do if I have to go to Coles.
Few reasons, but the main one is I was losing weight a little bit too much (10kg in just under half a year). I wanted to lose fat and replace with muscle, but the extent that I was losing it was kinda worrying as I was getting a little too skinny and not gaining any muscle mass, so I decided to call it quits and just eat what I want while still continuing the moderate amount of exercise I do daily.
Edit: I should add that I'll still do IF a few times a week, but it's not going to be a daily thing like it used to be. Plan on still doing 2-3 times a week depending on energy levels.
Haha sure! It's a bit of soy sauce, Chinese black vinegar, spring onion, coriander, and a special powder I made that's basically just MSG without all the additives. Throw that in a bowl with your choice of flavoured oil (I always do chillie or sichuan pepper) and top it off with the water used to boil the noodles and a fried egg. If I'm feeling fancy I'll also add some chopped tomatoes, but usually too lazy for that.
As someone who has the occasional Big Mac and last week had a Whopper for the first time in years, this Guardian piece about the advert vs reality of both burgers came as no surprise to me at all. The Big Mac really is pathetic these days.
I'm reminded of that scene in Falling Down Whammyburger
Big Macs are tiny now I feel, at the moment I prefer the Whooper more but I only in the last year had a Whooper for the first time so I don't know how they stack up to past version of it.
I used to HATE when people gatekeep parenting. Stories of mums or dads being like "Oh you don't know what tired is you don't have to have kids". Swore I wasnt gonna do that. Who am I to say you arnt tired because you have a different experience to me?
But I just had a friend try to tell me something about parenting, about the sacrifices you do or don't have to make. And I just wanted to laugh in his face. He isn't a dad. He would not have a clue the sacrifices required, or the decisions you face on the daily. I'm sure it came from the best of intentions, but it felt like a Call Of Duty player telling an Army Officer he was shooting wrong.
In the end I decided to walk away, because "Bro you're not a dad you are talking completely out of your ass and its condescending AF" is usually a friendship killer.
So I think maybe we're all best off just sticking to our own lanes a bit more. There's no way for a parent to say "this is hard" in a way that isnt off-putting to non parents, and its hard for non-parents to offer advice that doesn't sound like someone who read web MD trying to advise a surgeon.
When we brought our daughter home we were told to give her 3 hourly feeds because she was a little jaundice and in my head I'm thinking "when do I sleep?" but you do it. When I went back to my doctor I asked him if I should wake her for her feed he's like "hell no". Of course it makes sense not to but no one tells you that.
BC (before child) you tend to but things off to another time because you can but when you're a parent it doesn't matter how tired you are if it's for your kid you get it done.
Empathy and understanding, without offering advice or judgement, is apparently difficult for many of the humans in our lives. Everyone has it hard, parents especially, and a childfree telling a parent (or vice versa) how to live is egregious and ridiculous.
You're a better person than I for walking away tbh, I would have lost it.
Thinking of you and your family, you're absolutely smashing it man, you are fine and good and doing amazing!
Empathy and understanding, without offering advice or judgement, is apparently difficult for many of the humans in our lives.
I think this really nails it. I honestly think that some people actually want to be genuinely supportive, but lack the skills to express it and it comes off poorly.
Effective communication and thought expression are dying skills.
I thought ** I ** was reasonably prepared and knew what to expect, and the reality of parenthood still kicked my arse. Still wouldn't change it for the world :D
Ugh. Went for an interview on Friday morning and have that sinking feeling I didn't get the job. They said they would get back to me early this week and so far i've heard nothing. Feel like if they were keen they would be reaching out by now to do reference checks etc. I actually prepped hard for this - wrote out STAR answers, verbally practiced questions and went in and gave some new angles to my work examples that were different from all my other failed interviews. Was still bloody nervous though and I think it showed in my voice - maybe that didn't sit right with them? Sigh. I seem to be getting applications into the interview stage but just can't seem to seal the deal.
Send a thank you email, thanking them for their time and consideration. Doesn't have to long or overly verbose, but it puts you back on their radar - they'll either say they're still working on the applications, or they'll politely reject you. But 'thank you' emails tend to go a long way after an interview, as it shows you respect the time of the interviewers, blah blah etc.
Keep trying, and consider any "failed" applications as interview practice. It'll be alright, friend, you got this!
Ah I sent through individual 'thank you for meeting me/I do really want this job' emails to everyone on the interview panel on Monday! Maybe I will wait until the end of the week and follow up with the recruiter who scheduled the interview.
I used to interview people. I started with a huge pile of resumes, and whittled it down to a list of "second look". Then that list got reduced to "Interview". I wasn't interviewing people that didn't look good for the role. If you were at that stage, and your interview went well, you had decent odds of getting hired.
I managed all this with a big spreadsheet. I made comments about the candidates after each interview so that I could remember which applicant was which.I would tell people a rough time they'd hear back (if it was "Early in the week", it'd be because I was interviewing candidates until then.
Don't give up hope yet, there are several possible reasons why you haven't heard back. Interviews for other candidates might have been moved/rescheduled. It's possible they're running late for other reasons. It's possible they've offered it to someone else. It's possible someone else turns the role down and you'll still get contacted.
It's too early to tell. But, feel proud that you got to the interview stage. They only interview the people who look good. Interviews are exhausting and take a long time (not just while you're in there with them). Even if you don't get this role, you've learned something and you're obviously doing something right.
I have already spent 8 hours on making masks and I haven't even set up the sewing machine yet. Just takes so much time to find all the components and get them ready. I have to buy the parts and fabrics. Then wash and iron the fabrics. Print and cut patterns , cut fabric, then assemble , then sew. I'll make about 60 for the seagoons and for other family. All this in readiness for the next wav of covid.
Finally test drove a car I liked and looked to be completely above board. I've never driven a diesel Pajero though so I could be wrong, but my cursory dig didn't bring up anything major. Fingers crossed the mech inspection says its all good because I really really liked it!
My folks had a petrol Pajero. Lasted over 300k KM. Great car, only downside was the turning circle of a tank. And it was thirsty.
Just a heads up, Diesel maintenance is expensive. Mazda quoted me 10k in parts alone just to replace the injectors in my Diesel 6. So make sure you allow for a decent maintenance budget in case things do go wrong.
Yeah, I've heard the petrols are thirsty. I don't mind the added cost of a diesel mostly because I'm expecting it, plus for me the added cost outweighs a couple of things.
We love our 2014 diesel pajero. It replaced a very vintage Patrol. Much more car-like than the Patrol, but still capable of towing well and the little bit of bush driving we do.
The Pajero definitely is one of the more comfortable cars I've test driven. My only gripe was, and this could be a make and model issue, the steering wheel felt a little plasticy. Not a deal breaker though, if it truly annoys me I can always swap it out later down the track.
had an all hands meeting earlier today. I really wish they would disclose ahead of time if marketing are running it so I can avoid the complete waste of time circle jerk. I swear to god when they are on their death bed 40 years from now their dying works will be "not a good customer experience"
Heading into Adelaide tonight - it all looked so balmy when I checked the weather last week but it looks like I'll be waking up to the first part of the storm tomorrow. Boooo.
How long does something have to be in the work fridge before it's fair game? Asking because I've been staring at the same two cans of unopened soft drink for going on a month now.
Breakfast was a breakfast burrito with chorizo which I wasn't able to finish. I ordered a pink lemonade and for some reason they brought out 2.. then whenever I finished one they replaced it without asking. I drank like 3 and a half big glasses of pink lemonade because I friggin love the stuff.
Anyway here's the burrito. It's actually hours later and I'm now at IHOP with another pink lemonade lol
Oh and I went to the Pinball Hall of Fame earlier. They have just about every pinball machine I can think of. Free to enter which is rare for Vegas.. I spent a total of $3 there. I also won $350 after breakfast because I'm a winning machine, visited a dispensary and had a nice chat with the budtender there. It's a sunny 33 degrees and after IHOP I've run out of stuff to do today.
It's funny that Coles is now pulling out the whole red hand thing, now that people are getting a bit louder about groceries costing more.
"We’ve never been more excited. Whenever you see the Big Red Hand at Coles, it means you’re getting ‘Great value. Hands down.’." Yeah sure, $1.30 off, what a big bargin! Can't wait for them to pull the whole "members only" thing that Woolworths seem to be doing as of late. (Sorry that's a Reddit link, only other things I could find were Murdoch Media or crap).
I guess this is the end game for capitalism. Hyper personalised, manipulative, subject to constant surveillance. All design to ensure you spend more than you intended to and give over more and more data.
You ain’t got no money?
He’ll get you some
You ain’t got no car?
He’ll get you one
You ain’t got no self-respect, you feel like an insect
Well don’t you worry buddy, cause here he comes
Through the ghetto and the barrio and the Bowery and the slum
A shadow is cast wherever he stands
Stacks of green paper in his red right hand
Didn't take my afternoon meds yesterday because I forgot. The tiredness just crashed over me and swallowed me up. Maybe kinda good for my brain to reset a bit. The intense dreams started again though. Back on it today! Last day of FT work and it is HECTIC and I'm flying interstate this evening for a conference that I haven't even remotely read up about in terms of the speakers. Gotta prep the house for the other person coming in to catsit while I'm away. Let's goooo
Exercises completed. The washing I did last night and forgot about due to visitors has been remembered and hung out. Children have been warned that I will be later home than usual due to having to replace broken saucepans. Mr P has been warned that a package containing basketball ring for kids will likely arrive today. Missed my bus but fuck it, I'll catch the other one and do my park and laneways walk to work. Have a lovely day all!
Obsidian is the best thing to come out of Bethesda and it isn't even a game lol. I wish they would stop re-selling Skyrim and pump out an ES6 or a proper Fallout game, but here we are with another space game.
Was excited to introduce kids to Passiona. They didn't like it at all. I had a sip myself and I don't blame them it tastes weird. Tastes like they have subbed in an artificial sweetener. Did they change the formula or is my recollection just hazy after not really drinking this for a decade?
Anyway crisis averted. I tried it again today and it tasted normal. I am/was recovering from sick so I reckon my tastebuds were a bit out of calibration in that end of the flavour spectrum.
Finished a hard day at work, very strenuous but satisfying (I like that kind of thing). Basketball ring arrived while I was at work, and was assembled by Mr P. Minipeelers were enjoying it until elder minipeeler got a splinter in his foot. Mr P attempted removal and broke it, leaving some in there. I got home and had to remove the rest, the whole thing would've been around 2cm which is long for a splinter. Mr P copped a severe chastisement for allowing the children to play basketball outside in their socks. I'm one of those "put your SHOES ON!" parents, even in summer. It took ages to get the damn splinter out, it was really lodged in there deep. That shit is my jam though, weird thing to be good at but 🤷🏼♀️
Perfect weather for a big gardening day today. I'm going to finish digging out the roses in the front yard, then take Chomp out to do some mulching - including the dreaded prickly rose cuttings. Then I have a few apple and pear trees to plant. Lots of choices after that depending on how I'm feeling - I can do some more work on the new beds, organise the next lot of seeds to be planted, do a bit of weeding. I'll see how I feel when I get there!
At the moment electric cars are for rich people. You basically you need to be homeowner and wealthy enough for the car and the installation of charging infrastructure. And God help you if you live in an apartment building.
There would need to be large scale infrastructure change for electric cars to become the majority. Charging in apartments, service stations, not to mention could the grid handle it?
Currently there are some places you can charge for free, like my local Woolies has a few car parks for charging. Usually about half are taken. I imagine this won’t continue this as the number of EVs increases. Or maybe it will become paid or part of a shopping membership.
I’ve got a high as a kite kitty with the munchies (for treats not dinner). Prancing around merrily and smooching. She just walked over and headbutted my full coffee mug hard, and it went everywhere.
Onto the recently changed bedding, down behind the headboard, into the drawers, under the base of the touch lamp, on my art stylus, on my Apple earphones, a few books, a medication packet, box of tissues… thankfully the stylus is still working and it missed my sketchbooks. Fingers crossed for the earphones. I grabbed one of her cotton blankets and mopped it up fast while she tried to cuddle in my lap.
I’ve wiped up what I can access. She’s settled in on my lap but when she gets up I can blot the carpet and give everything a thorough clean. Maybe soak the carpet spills in biological cleaner so it can just sit without scrubbing
Any string players here? What do call a violin that's strung as a viola? An orchestra person I know mentioned it to me in passing, but i haven't been able to find it again....
Does anyone know if you can use an 8bitDo controller with a ps4? I know you can't with a ps5, but I can't find a straight answer about the ps4. Seems like maybe, with an adaptor?
Anyone here have suggestions/know of an unbiased financial advisor?
We’re paying way too much on car rental now so looking to replace that with our own car.
Tossing up between buying a brand new 2023 Corolla hybrid sedan for $37k driveaway, getting a used 2020 Corolla hybrid hatch with 52000km for $30k driveaway (but my wife and I collectively agree that the 2023 option would be better). From dealer.
Also tossing up between a novated lease vs a People Choice Credit Union car loan (not doing cash anymore). Have trouble doing a true comparison taking into account the balloon payment but from my limited abilities, it seems like the CU is cheaper when factoring in that $11k novated balloon.
My personal experience is that Novated Leases are not financially competitive compared to a car loan and buying outright. Especially at the lower end of car cost scale like you are.
The GST savings are minimal/non existent, the tax savings are minimal, the maintenance and admin costs are inflated and of course that damned balloon. You'll end up paying way more than you should for the car with the added pain of a direct reduced income.
Tossing up between buying a brand new 2023 Corolla hybrid sedan for $37k driveaway
I suspect your struggle here is going to be wait time. As far as I know, most toyota models are on a 2 year delay atm.
Its shit buying something 2 years old for basically the same price, BUT it is good being able to buy it and walk away the same day.
Financially speaking this might be most sensible option, due to how much we are paying to rent cars... I love seeing my wife have huge smile on her face whenever we arrive at some forest or park.
That said, I also received another quote from another novated lease provider. First line of the email said 12 months wait lol.
Whoops. I stayed up a bit too late playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey because I've been needing to finish the DLCs. Good thing I didn't stay up just for Starfield, because that launches at 10am (which okay I only get like half an hour to play, not even).
Going to after work drinks tomorrow night and the problem with my job is that I educate germ filled toddlers who have the snottiest noses so my preference is to change my clothing regardless of whether snot ends up on the clothing or not. So do I wear a sweater dress and take another sweater dress to change into, or do I wear jeans and a top to work and then take a replacement pair of jeans and a nice top to put on. The dress is perfect for ease and speed, the jeans are sort of practical and more casual but not sure why. If someone could unscramble my thoughts and make a decision for me, I'd appreciate it.
