Now I wonder, though, did he buy a Tesla for this? Or did already have a Tesla and thought of a creative way to get rid of it?
What's going through my mind is a scene from Straight Outta Compton:

Could not find the answer to that but I don't think so, given what he has to say about the installation. Also I don't see why he wouldn't get an already wrecked car for dirt cheap to do that.

Edit : the car in the picture even shows clear signs of wreckage, e.g the hood with giant scratches all over even though it looks like the head wouldn't even have touched it

The Olmecs or Olmec were an early known major Mesoamerican civilization, flourishing in the modern-day Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco from roughly 1200 to 400 BCE during Mesoamerica's formative period.
