Donations for the legal defense of Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, topped $55,000 Thursday, amid a wave of online support for the suspect that’s shown no signs of cresting.
There is no evidence this is an official donation fund
His full name is registered with the state of PA as: LUIGI MANGIONE.
Inmate Number QQ7787.
Currently at SCI Huntingdon (yes HUNTINGDON)
Address for mail: LUIGI MANGIONE, QQ7787, SCI Huntingdon, PO Box 33028, St Petersburg, FL, 33733
All mail is scanned by a third-party and then a copy is provided to them, so don’t even think about sending something “extra”.
To send money (everyone needs money in jail, even $10 goes a long way) you have to go through JPay. And again, need to use his name, LUIGI MANGIONE, and inmate number QQ7787
DOB is 05/06/1998
If anyone that’s done time recently in PA sees something is missing in this info, please leave a comment.
I'm not certain his PA jail funds will transfer to NY if/when he gets extradited. I know there was an issue with transferring my brother's commissary funds when he moved jails, and that was within the same state.
The thing holding back these donation funds is verification that they're actually for Mangione's defense. "The December 4th Legal Committee" could just be a scam.
I've never heard of "GiveSendGo", and who is [email protected] (the email address listed on the GiveSendGo page)? The fact that it's some random Gmail is kinda sketchy. Are we sure this is legit?
GiveSendGo is a Christian crowdfunding website.[5] GiveSendGo has attracted controversy for allowing far-right extremists to fundraise, including neo-Nazis, white supremacists and hate groups.[15]
Just FYI give send go is a Christian fund raising site that supports January 6th rioters, and it sounds like they are going to use the donation money for other cases. I disputed the charge on my card and got it refunded after I learned that
I never heard of that place before and I hope a lot of people were not too knee-jerk about it. It wasn't like, "official" in any sense that I could see.
He has 30+ years of criminal defense experience, and clearly has some media training (which let's face it, that's going to be critical in this case in particular).
The guy has even successfully appealed the PA supreme court. What more are you looking for in a defense lawyer, exactly?
Yeah from that video and the one later he seems to know his stuff. Using "put yourself in Luigi's position" is the perfect answer to avoid leaking sensitive info about your discussions with your client that the media are constantly prodding for, while still evoking sympathy for the defendant.
I admit I haven't watched the entire press conference...
But I think our standards have been drastically lowered by the last election if the dude in that video qualifies as "clearly having some media training".
The most noteworthy case in that article was a robbery turned double murder where the defendant is clearly guilty. I didn't see anything about appealing the PA SC, but whether or not that's impressive is highly dependent on the exact case. And it's not as rare as you seem to think it is.
I'm not saying he's a bad lawyer.
Just that he's not the caliber lawyer Luigi needs when the full force of the government is going to come down on him.
He seems like a pretty good lawyer to me. A lot of non-answers. No speculation or sensationalism. He's controlling the conversation rather than letting the reporters derail it. Any particular reason you think he's bad?
Idk, joking around and feeling relatable are pretty good strategies for making a jury feel more sympathetic to the defense. And as other people have said with how high profile this case being calm and good on camera is important. So far I've thought he seemed great.
Also, there's basically no chance he successfully blocks extradition. This is just a delaying action to have more time as a story. Being able to handle media well is probably his primary requirement.
With as advertised as this one is, it would be very difficult for someone to just run away with that money. If there ever is an official one I’m sure the funds would be transferred. But of course we will find out
why does he need a defense fund? He's going to be defended either way.
if they convict him, which they probably will based on DNA and overwhelming evidence, and send him to jail. would he need to pay his lawyers back for their time?
Did he give a sperm sample or something at the crime seen? What DNA?
And public defenders though they are as skilled as any attorney are very much overworked in many places. Private counsel can offer more attention to the details of a case and spend time researching potentially novel theories to defend their client.
They can sample DNA now if you've simply been in the area. They can sample it off the backpack he discarded in the park. They can sample it off the shell casings. They have his movement across many cameras.
Remember, they only have to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt".
I think lemmy users need to get their head out of their asses with the "we really don't know if he did it" thing. As much as anyone might think the crime was justified, the evidence is pretty solid. And with such an emotional newsworthy case, they're not going to bring it to trial unless the evidence is beyond reproach.
Same reason I don't cite poor farmers giving to Trump's presidency.
Faith in an idea is a powerful motive. The poorer you are the more you rely on faith rather ability and/or resources. Literally take a political science 101 class. Belief that something is right or true is like 99% of how organized humanity works.
And killing Thompson is the whole reason people elevate him. If Luigi Mangione is actually just some random dude getting his McD's after working on his fan-fiction manifesto and printing out copycat fake IDs for lols, then the story isn't really about Luigi.
Hey, don't lump people like me together with the bootlickers. Being a massive instance, you'll see a lot more stupid views coming from .world overall, but it's not representative of the userbase like with lemmygrad or the other political instances
