  • Byron Bay is to be stripped of its nudist beach – and naturists blame ‘conservative creep’
  • Playalinda beach on the space coast, near Titusville and next to the launch pads. Last parking lot is clothing optional. Really clean and natural beach. Also great for watching rocket launches, if they keep the beach open for it.

(The structures in the distance are rocket launch towers, it's legitimately the closest you can get.)

  • Byron Bay is to be stripped of its nudist beach – and naturists blame ‘conservative creep’
  • There's one in my area of Florida. It's the busiest part of the beach lol. Other people get judgy if you tell them you go, but the people there are super normal. It's really more about yourself being free in nature. If you go to ogle at people you'll be disappointed and also unwelcome, naturists don't generally tolerate creeps. They like to keep it chill and everyone interacts like any other beach. Occasionally there's even kids there.

But it's technically illegal in the state... But the cops turn a blind eye and haven't gone after it (it's been this way for decades). The (federally run) park even put up signs to warn that you made encounter "nude sunbathers" at a certain part of the beach.

  • Estoy muerdo inseido
  • I've been learning Spanish using a method called "Comprehensible Input" in which basically you just.... watch and listen to things in Spanish. That's it. No translation. No grammar study, no vocab memorisation. I've been at it about 9 months, and almost 800 hours of listening/watching time. (Which is about half of what supposedly will get you to conversational fluency, at least for romance languages. Less related to English languages can take longer)

It works. I can understand day to day conversation easily. I'm watching Breaking Bad with a Spanish dub. I can read YA novels (and listen to audiobooks). I miss some words and phrases here and there of course, but I still get the meaning from context most time and that helps me learn.

My speaking lags significantly behind my comprehension skills of course, as I've only practiced that a small fraction of the time. But it's grown leaps and bounds. I can speak 10x better than I could a month ago. Supposedly it doesn't take nearly as long to develop that skill once you start racking up listening/reading hours and that's been my experience.

The beginning is a slog though since you have to watch things you can understand.... Which basically amounts to videos of people talking at you like a baby with drawings and hand gestures so obvious that you can understand what they're saying even if you muted the audio, but once you get to the point that you can understand actually interesting content it becomes SUPER easy. You just replace all the time you spend watching and listening and reading things with.... Watching and listening and reading things in the language you want to learn. Once you reach that point it doesn't take effort. Learning Spanish has changed from something I'm trying to do to an inevitability. It's honestly like magic. If I've gotten this far in less than a year I can't imagine where I'll be in two.

If you're interested in the method check this playlist and this guy can explain in detail (turn on English subtitles if you don't understand Spanish): https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlpPf-YgbU7GrtxQ9yde-J2tfxJDvReNf

I'm not trying to advertise for the site he runs, you can totally apply the method through free resources (and he has hundreds of free videos for this too). But it is an incredible resource that's super cheap and can get you past the beginning stages. I've moved past their content at this point but it was invaluable in the beginning.

The Lemmy Club has updated to Lemmy 0.19.4!

Sorry it took 35 minutes over my promised timeframe. My fault. I should've been keeping up my Ansible config not bumbling around manually. Then I would've known that I needed to uncap pict-rs' memory limit. Ah well we got there in the end.

    ----

0.19.4 mostly changes things in the backend, but there are a couple notable user features:

    • You can now see all media you've uploaded and delete what you wish (only affects media uploaded after the upgrade)

    • Better federation with Mastodon and other similar software, all posts are tagged with the community name (in the background, you won't see it) so that Mastodon users can see them.

    • Vote totals now have settings. You can see a total (Upvotes minus downvotes), both seperate, or a percentage.

You can see the full changelog here.

As always, thanks for being a member of The Lemmy Club.

    Defederation of eviltoast.org

    Hey all -

Just a quick announcement that we're currently not federating with eviltoast.org - it seems to be the base of the spam bots we've seen recently. I don't think the site administration teams have anything to do with the spam however they also seem to be absent, and are not doing anything to combat it. Until such time that they are actively cleaning up their spam issue they will remain defederated. I'm pretty lax about our federation, but this has been a persistent issue (See rule 9). I'm sure the spammer will probably find another host at some point though.

Thanks for being a member of TheLemmy.Club

Edit: it looks like thier admins have cleaned it up. Removing for now.

    Highlights

Welcome to release v1.99.0 of Immich. This release adds the new logo, fixes many bugs, and improves the application. Some of the highlights include:

    • \[WEB] Sort photos and videos to display direction in an album.
    • On-disk cache on the mobile app to provide a better viewing experience.
    • There is a new endpoint for OpenTelemetry metrics to monitor performance.
    • Optimized queries for large libraries.
    • Add upload progress and speed indicator.
    • XMP sidecar file is now recognized with both photo.ext.xmp and photo.xmp extensions.
    • Drag to select - Now press your thumb to drag and select in the selection mode.
    • Improve user feedback in the mobile app's backup and album selection screen.
    • Various improvements for the library scanning process.

Asset's display direction in the album

We added an option to change the order of the assets in the album so you can view the assets from older to newest and vice versa.

    album.view\.order.mp4

    Mobile asset caching

Improving cache for remote thumbnails and the images, they now stay on disk so that they can load faster and give a better experience while used offline. You should feel a faster loading experience across the app.

    Performance monitoring with OpenTelemetry integration

Immich provides a variety of performance metrics to allow for local monitoring and insights. This integration is primarily in the form of Prometheus metrics. However, exporting traces is also possible due to OpenTelemetry instrumentation. Please visit the documentation to learn how to enable this feature

    Note

This opt-in feature allows you to monitor Immich's performance. This data isn't sent anywhere beyond what you've configured.

File size progress and upload speed indicator

We added an indicator to show the file's size that has been uploaded and the upload speed under the progress bar in the backup screen.

    Simulator.Screen.Recording.-.iPhone.15.Pro.Max.-.2024-03-14.at.18.08.37.mp4

    Drag to select

You can now drag to select in the mobile app when in selection mode; this will help make selecting in bulk easier.

    drag\_to\_select.mp4

And lastly, I want to express my gratitude to @immich-app/contributor who make this behemoth of a release happen 🎉

And as always, bugs are fixed, and many other improvements also come with this release.

Updated to 0.19.0 - took a biiiit longer than expected.

0.19 is a major update for Lemmy!

    Big changes:

    • Instance blocking for users: You can block the posts of users of any instance from showing in your feed.

    • New Sort - Scaled: boosts smaller communities

    • Better 2FA: actually tests your 2FA before applying, so you won't get locked out. If you had 2FA before, it'll be reset.

    • User data export/import: change instances easily!

    • Lots of performance and background changes.

Check here for more info: https://thelemmy.club/post/6199772

    ----

Well borked some things during the upgrade that required going back to the backup. But we got there eventually. I will have to mess some more with Ansible to bring it in line with my current deployment so future upgrades go a bit more smoothly.

If you were logged in, you'll have to log in again. If you had 2FA set up, you don't anymore and will have to redo it.

We were down for heh, 2.5 hours. Any activity on the Fediverse in that time won't have synced to our instance. However if anyone votes or replies to that comment it will sync. So we shouldn't miss anything worthwhile :P

A dozen or two TB of storage for media on the cheap?

Well I'm just about fed up with streaming bullshit. I currently have a home server that's just a raspberry pi4 with a bunch of docker containers and it served my light usage well.

But with transcoding on Jellyfin I'll be needing some more power. And a bunch of storage. So wanting to perhaps build a new little server.

CPU requirements aren't high at all. Need to transcode maybe 2 concurrent 4K streams, A cheap discrete GPU or a CPU with a decent enough iGPU could handle this. Other applications are basically negligible, like Vaultwarden and PiHole, torrent, using as a general file storage server.

I also recently acquired a mini PC which is plenty powerful, but doesn't have any way of adding a bunch of drives. So another option is setting up a pure NAS and just using the mini PC as the server. It's got an i7 10700T and iris 630 iGPU.

I've been using Linux and self hosting basic things for years, but I'm pretty new to this level of hardware and little experience with RAID.

    Budget: ~$500ish - storage goal: 12+ TB
