I'll attempt (half heartedly) to do some housework I didn't do yesterday. The mini peelers need their school uniforms washed so that's first cab off the rank. Then I'll produce some kind of chicken dish, maybe my ginger plum sauce chicken.
Cats are hounding me while I try and do the housework. Its cute but the kitten plays with everything but his toys when he wants me to play. Vaccuum scares the shit out of them, so that's my hack. They'll leave me alone if I leave it running while doing other chores.
Already done an aa meeting. Have loads of laundry to put away, dishes to do... domestic stuff. later go for a walk. My body is kinda fucked up and I now walk with a limp for some reason.
Bf's cat has been super demanding this morning, so I've been walking around with his laser pointer to play with him, but now he's trying to drink my Berocca. Good call on the vacuum, good luck with getting your other domestic stuff done!
Just puttering today rather than initial plan of walking to the main strip and checking out the little market - feel like I've worn myself out the last few days doing the gottas on top of trying to get out more per doctors' suggestions.
Really want to tackle clearing Mum's room as part of Operation Sort Shit - I pulled everything around trying to clear a specific area and now it looks like a total mess.
I did my research last night for where I'd go for breakfast in Bright, walked up to it in the chilled morning drizzle eager for some (reviewer described) fluffy yellow eggs and coffee only to find, to my horror, that a sign on the door said "We are closed for annual leave until June 26, sorry we missed you"
I was so disappointed I left town immediately. I drove without a specific destination, in search of a place of fluffy yellow eggs and delicious coffee.
I find myself now in Wangaratta, sat inside a cafe I spotted as I drove through the city centre. Eggs ordered, sipping my coffee and listening to my audiobook through my headphones. The sun is shining.
Oh the pic is gorgeous. I’ve heard of Suva. (Never been) thank you for posting the photo. Have an amazing rest of your trip. Drink up that warm weather as you’ll be sad when you get back. We have a whole top of 11C tomorrow 😢
Also thank you for adding the little description, helps for any vision impaired people
I have solutions for this depending on which device I'm using.
If I'm watching my TV, my soundbar has a Voice button which has 3 levels which it will boost the center channel to help with it, or I can connect my bluetooth headphones and they handle it better.
If I'm watching on my PC, I use some free software called FxSound which is an equalizer for Windows. Even just installing it and using the General profile is a noticeable improvement over the default balances but it also has sound profiles for Movies, TV, Transcription, Music, Voice, Volume Boost, Gaming, Classic Processing, Light Processing, Bass Boost and Streaming Video. I recommend installing FxSound for all Windows users, I have it on all of my computers.
If for some reason I'm using my phone, or using my phone to Bluetooth to my headphones or to my car stereo I use an equalizer on that (Android) called REEQ which has preset profiles or you can make custom ones. That app has definitely increased the quality of the audio from and streamed from my phone.
It’s so annoying. But why is it so? Never used to be a problem with regular tv, or dvds, is it a feature of streaming technology, or is it just currently fashionable to make voices indiscernible? I always have to watch with subtitles on.
I feel like turning rules-based ideas like "don't dox people" into positive values-based statements is a very healthy experience. I need to do this in more areas of my life 🙂
Nawww! I was low key wondering if I hadn’t shown up if someone would reach out. Thank you. How’d we forget ghostghost? And omegatau! And saxmachine?! Oh my god we left so many behind!
I posted to the Melbourne peregrine falcon, mental health and photography subs telling them that we were here. Then u/Penguin_in_the_sand responded and told me about a new sub called MelbourneDailyThread and told me to post on there as well, so I did. It's weird how all the other Melbourne-related subs are still alive and kicking, just not the actual main sub! Felt weird to me anyway.
A former coworker who mooved on to greener pastures left a couple cows as mascots. They've now taken over and are demanding higher pay(hay?) And greener grass hehehehe
Good morning! This is your Chef speaking. For ingredients purchase purpose I have made a roll call spreadsheet. Please check that your name is there, and add those who are missing / you've messaged. There are a couple of people whom we can't remember the names of. Would be great if you know their names. Much appreciated.
I was u/Positive_Complaint on Reddit.. felt like a change as that name was one of the random generated names Reddit offered me, even though I liked it. I think there was a Supersnazz or similar who was doing Australia's cheapest house type posts for a while.
Present 🎁.
Edit: can't recall exact username but gptodd or something? The guy that has given people airport lounge passes and has done some other really generous stuff
It has an official list of what they actually represent (which is what is read out when using text to voice software) and shows you what they actually look like on different platforms. You can paste an emoji into the search bar to look up what it means. Very handy if you are like me and spend way too much time wondering if that little face is actually smiling or grimacing.
I realised yesterday when the blackbird in my name showed as a red bird and a black square on my PC just how different they can display too. And all the little faces are so small, there are quite a few I can't tell what they are supposed to be.
Not sure how co-ordinated it was but there’s definitely a story here. I sort of migrated earlier than most here. It’s an impressive community and I hope everyone wants to stick around the fed.
What would you guys' love to see added to Lemmy? Personally, I kinda miss the Reddit trophies, how am I going to feel superior to all of you who signed up 4 days ago if I can't flex ending up in the x year club 2 days earlier???
You make an interesting point. I was reading Lemmy documentation and some GitHub discussion regarding gamification. I did like the little fun things/quirks of Rdt, but can also understand the reasoning for why/why not.
I am honestly just impressed that members of the DT have put effort in to keep going. So just seeing everyone’s posts for the time being is enough for me. Funny how when it closed the first time, I had things that I was like, I’ll do my little brain dump/share to DT, and then realised I couldn’t and it was admittedly silly and sad at the same time.
Automod tools and the ability to pin comments within posts is high on my list at the moment. But mostly better sort tools and the ability to create custom feeds. Although working with a couple of different accounts is a bit like having custom feeds.
Wait so the reddit CEO is now going after mods? My dude, you can disagree with them all you like, but don’t piss off the folks who keep your site from becoming bloody Twitter when they do it for free!
Oh and he praised Elon…. Whilst Twitter are getting evicted from one of their offices for not paying rent.
Get comfortable gang! Looks like we’re not going home any time soon. And even if it were, suspect it’d be temporary!
That's the thing that gets me: they had mods working for free, people contributing content for free.. they rammed ads down people's throats to the tune of about $500 million in the past year and he goes after 3rd party app devs, some of whom were students (who also made their apps for free). I get it, people like to make money but JFC!
I understand that if something is free, you're the product. Of course, you're still the product when you're paying for content. But in general, I get the idea. But why the fuck would you piss where you eat? Your content is created by and large from people. Whether it's original content or news articles, or whatever.
waiting at my desk for 10 whole minutes
for my oven to ding telling me it's done with it
In the distance I hear parties and pounding bass tracks
but I'm at home, warm and toasty, baking my midnight snacks
warm shortbread cookies with a caramel filling
cut shapes in the tops if you're able and willing
a delicious treat made with butter and dreams
and the magic of premade caramel creme
Koala was amazing back when I brought it. I think it was made in aus back then through and is no longer, but a lot of other people swear by the mattress in a box thing.
Good news, I got some pants at the market and they're really good pants too, I've had them on my wishlist for a while.
Bad news, my dad and stepmum believed for a good moment of that hoax where school students identifying as cats that started in America. So... That was fun. They're not like cookers, but I can see why it's easy to believe that stuff. But man...
Air fryer owners. What is the cleaning situation like? I have not joined the air fryer revolution yet. It’s seems like they might be good, but is the time saved in cooking negated by time spent in cleaning? I’m thinking compared to using normal oven, which does not need cleaning every use and baking sheet is easy to wash or put in dishwasher.
I actually can't get mine properly clean. I've tried soaking with dishsoap but stays greasy and smelling like a dirty bbq. I've been putting off trying something more drastic, I should get onto that.
It cooks the hell out of potato gems, I can tell you that much. Early days of having it I made pork crackling too (which worked REALLY well) but I'd recommend not trying that with your air fryer indoors, especially if you live in an apartment. I had to run it on my balcony so I didn't set off all of the smoke alarms lol
I'm a bit late to this party, but while I don't have one myself, we have an airfryer at work. It's one with a separate basket inside a drawer that comes out completely from the machine. My boss uses it to grill meat as he's into keto/paleo. IT IS A PAIN TO CLEAN. The basket and drawer have to be soaked and then scrubbed because it didn't take long for the non-stick coating to give up the ghost. Work does not have a dishwasher (other than me and my slaves). So it doesn't get done more than once a day in the morning having been soaked overnight. One of these days in the not too distant future I will defenestrate the entire object. With happy squeals of delight.
I have a smaller air fryer, where the basket and draw are completely removable, and seperate to the heating element. I just soak it with hot water & some dishsoap, and it wipes clean pretty easy most times.
I use it 99% of the time over the oven as I live alone, and it doesn't really require any pre-cooking time.
Depends on the kind of airfryer you have. Mine is basically a toaster oven. It has a drip tray, so I can just yank that out and clean it properly every so often.
It also toasts better than my oven or toaster, so it ends up being used for a loooot of things. Fantastic thing. Got it from Harris Scarfe in a new years sale for like.. I think $200?
They’re…ok. Smaller capacity means quicker heating time, so can be useful for small apartments with no oven. They do make nice crispy food that would usually be fried, and that’s nice. However, the treats for mine have to be hand washed which is a bit of a pain. There’s also a weird bit between the door and the oven which is a little crumb magnet but you can’t get them all out. That’s pretty annoying.
It depends on what you cook in there. Sometimes I just wipe out the drawer and the basket with paper towel then wet the towel and give it another wipe. If it's really grubby I'll soak it in the sink.
This one has more comments so I vote it the winner..damn, bots can be helpful lol. I wonder if the old mods are still hanging around Reddit twiddling their thumbs or whatever
It is possible to do automatic posts and things now, but it requires programming knowledge that makes it a bit hard. On Reddit people had developed tools (automoderator) to make it easier, and I'm sure there are people working on that for Lemmy too.
I'm slowly getting my head around the basics of what applications are needed to create some automated tools, but I'm coming from a very low starting point as far as programming knowledge goes so I'm not sure how long before I can actually do anything.
I've got no idea about the old mods - they always seemed like unknowable mythical creatures, my brain struggles to believe they even exist outside of Reddit🤣
Kiddo is too big for size 000 but a little too small for 00. 00 has little grippy things on the feet, but says it’s 3 -6 months. Surely he’s not needing grip in the next couple of months?!
Decided to take a punt on a dirty spice chai. Yeah nah… won’t be doing that again. I’ll drink it don’t get me wrong, but it’s neither a coffee nor a spiced chai. And therefore it’s the worst of both worlds.
How would you all feel about me sending an invite to the folks at r/melbournementalhealth? I've noticed that their sub is still open and there might be a few people on there we know who don't know about us yet or know where to find us. Just an idea.
I'm not sure what your experience was, but I'm finding it frustrating in certain particular ways. I feel like it's getting worse in that every time I take the kids out I'm unfortunate enough to encounter someone absolutely off their heads. The kids look to me for an explanation. Sometimes it's mentally ill people having a bit of a tough time, and some understanding/sympathy is called for. Sometimes it's a case of, "and that's why you don't do drugs, kids!" But sometimes people are just jerks, and it's hard to explain.
Engaging in the masochistic activity of looking at apartments and imagine what it would like to live alone. It really really fkn irks me that someone on my salary in their late 20s can't afford a half decent apartment.
Wait till you’re actually paying a mortgage! It’s like you finally caught the wild horse and it’s actively trying to buck you off for being too new to have games the market like all the freakin boomers with 5 houses rented out that they do no maintenance on!
it's rough! side note, there are a lot of 'nice' apartments that are actually pretty shit, living in a cheap shoebox is actually alright depending on the neighbours (applies to anywhere really)
If you can get a housemate who's decent, it's a lot easier to live with one other person. We're in a fancy apartment that costs us individually way less than what my housemate's newish partner pays for her 1 bed place.
Watching a new to me movie everyday, not just lotr & hobbit 😏
Today was Good Will Hunting. I had been putting off watching this for decades because ... "reasons"
Yes, it hit as hard as I thought it would. But I'm older now and can see that movie was written by kids, genius kids but kids. 😉
It's true, easy work is relaxing, it leaves the mind free.
Luck is more important than most people know.
Choices in life aren't usually dichotomous, you don't have to choose between a person/people and opportunity. If you can, choose both.
Still shits me that society thinks smart people have a duty to self actualise and serve society. If there is duty the duty goes both ways. You want what brains can give, then give brains some support and respect their freedom of choice.
I recently read "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell, which looked at what leads people to make extraordinary achievements. Basically, genius is not enough, there is also a lot of luck and social support required. I highly recommend it, and it definitely supports what you are saying here.
Decided to start that sci-fi tv series Silo and the reviews mostly being about Rebecca Ferguson's accent kinda shit me. It doesn't detract from her acting or the show so I don't get what the big deal is. Like are people really upset she doesn't have that generic American accent and think that constitutes "bad acting".
I’m half way through and enjoying it. Though the pacing is a bit off. I feel like it blew its load plot wise in the first 2 eps and now we’re in danger of another lost or manifest….
I like her character and acting too but her accent is all over the place! And it does break the immersion a little bit.
I agree on the pacing, I'm on ep three and there's a bit of a drop.
Maybe it's because I watch lots of foreign language stuff and I used to listen to accents all day everyday for work so it doesn't bother me at all. Obviously I hear her jumping around but it does wreck my immersion or anything.
I watched 4 or 5 of them and got annoyed at the slowness and haven't watched more. I just read what the deal is online and went "ah ok" and felt I know what I wanted to know from the show, not interested in watching it happen really. Maybe I'll revisit it sometime.
I didn't think twice about her accent though.. I never expect anything from accents in future sci-fi because who knows how language and accents will evolve or why. Like in The Expanse.
spent the day gardening at the community garden. plucked out a lot of weeds, more weeds to tackle at home as well as the community garden. went to bunnings bought supplies to reframe one plot for pea and beans. Monday involves a lot of calling and harassing of people. yea long week ahead
Just had a flashback to a highschool cringe moment.
I wrote a poem and drew a rose all pretty for one of my first girlfriends. She framed it and put it above her bed.
The poem was basically about how the rose is really beautiful but you have to be careful to not get too close because it also has thorns and it will hurt you...
You want a high school cringe moment.. I wrote a poem for my crush who was waaaaaay out of my league. Dropped the piece of paper on the ground and scuffed it up, then pretended to "find" it in front of her and give it to her and she instantly saw through the ruse and mocked me for it.
I'm an original pearl jam fan. Was in the first wave over the fence in 95. Burnt into my memory that night. I remember Eddie said something like, there's a whole bunch of extra people in here now, everybody be cool and we'll keep playing........ everyone was cool and they kept playing, and it was amazing.
don't know much about history, don't know much biology,...... nor countries in Central Asia ending with stan
to explain the graphic, the squares are attempts at naming a country based on shape, green gives geographic proximity, blue direction, the stars and little building are for capital city, flag, population and currency
Ok I dunno if anyone else is experiencing this but it’s the second time it’s happened to me.
On Mlem or the web browser (on my phone, iPad or computer) I can’t see it access any content that was posted since last night. If I log out, I can see all of it, but the second I log back in it’s all gone.
On the Melbourne page I was able to sort by new posts and find the one Raven posted here and click on the thread. I can see that it exists and see that there are 40 comments but I can’t see any of them. Not even sure if posting will work.
When I try to change the sort order of the Melbourne page or view the posts, I can only see the stuff made by mods. Last time it fixed itself the next day but idk 🤷♀️
Oh it worked. So odd. I seem to have it working now but I don’t know how. I fiddled with the settings, changing them from the default to something different and then changing them back and that seemed to work. Still not working on Mlem at all though.
Maybe something to do with Mlem being beta? I’m not using Mlem, I’m pretty iffy about installing beta stuff on my phone. I just use the browser on my phone.
Nah it was/is doing it in not just Mlem but every web browser on every device I own. So it’s some glitch with my account specifically. Mlem has completely shit the bed for me and just errors out every time I try to use it, so I’ve deleted it for now. I’ll try again when it’s out of beta
Spose so. I said I'd do it, but procrastinata beat me to it. Let's run two and see what happens? Could be fun. Didn't work out how to pin it to the top though. Any hints?
Any hot tips on how to put a smoke alarm back after changing batteries? The Bunnings lady makes it look like child's play but the top came right off (rather than being attached via a flat cord) and I'm struggling to align the top back to the body and slot it back in :(
Lol yeah I feel like they didn't really think about this when designing these because unless the whole thing is transparent you can't really see and try to align the bits that fit
At the p's place helping them get a few things ready for our trip to bro's wedding in JK. To say things get tense is an understatement before trips. Been a while seens I've been with them but same ol..
Old man bought some 'tiles' the find stuff airtag type things for their luggage. I set them up all good to go. Work great.
I leave them on the table next to the passports and he freaks out saying I need to put them in an envelope so they can find them before we leave...
G'day again DT peeps! So, the steam "summer" sales are coming up at the end of the month (AKA the time I can spend a shitton of money on games and not feel bad). My Steam library feels a little lacking, does anyone have any suggestions? My only thing is I'm not big into shooters or survival type games. But I'd love some reccos!
I personally really like the True Fear Games, so far there’s two out of three released. The last has been held up by funding and development issues. The games are hidden object type games but with an actually good jump scare side to them. Very atmospherically creepy
Have you played Unpacking yet? It's an Australian-made game that'll take you about 4 - 5 hours to complete. It's been my favourite casual game for the past few years. Very sweet little game.
I'll second the recommendation for Divinity Original Sin 2, and I'll add to that the amazing Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (fun mechanics & story! good lgbtq rep!), and the upcoming Baldurs Gate 3 (which has its full release in August). Rimworld is also an absolutely mad game that you can do just about anything in. Hit MMO Final Fantasy XIV has a steam version, but be warned - it has the best story I've ever played through in entirety, it's very long, and it's very, very, good. If you have an addictive personality, maybe handle that recommendation with care.
Have you played any of the Dragon Age games? They're all fantastic. Inquisition usually goes on sale for like $15.
Dorfromantik is another really chill casual game I like. You place hexes good. Yep.
Thanks for the reccos! Unpacking looks pretty chill, on the wishlist! Divinity doesn't seem like my type of game (I don't really like RPGs either for the most part), same with Pathfinder. Rimworld I see recommended everywhere (along with Rust and factorio). Rimoworlds graphics remind me a lot of Prison Architects (from a quick look at the trailer). Never played dragon age
Dorfromantik (holy hell I'm never gonna remember how to spell that) looks quite good though! I'm a little on the fence about it, but the graphics look beautiful and they have trains! Trains = automatic buy (well, not quite, but close to it)
I got quoted 520 to 580$ to do a pink ombre on virgin hair (pretty short, just below chin length) and I know they use Olaplex etc, but that feels excessive? Am I wrong?
I looked around on some other salons, and they quote between 150 to 200 ish (without treatments like Olaplex etc, which seem to be another 70$ on top). I think I might ask around for salon recs, I remember I did a full ombre on long hair like 5 or 6 years ago and it was 300, roughly. (I know things are more expensive now but the jump to almost 600, for short hair, seems just crazy).
