Oh god that must have been awful for everyone involved. Are you able to talk to a pro if you need to? Maybe consider taking Fri off for a long weekend to decompress. Hope all’s well for your colleague and the rest of the team too.
My boss just tried to talk to me about The Ashes and I just stared at him completely uncomprehending of what any of his words meant. "howaboutthatfourthtest", he said as he passed my desk, with absolutely NO CONTEXT. Cue me being like what test? Are we testing something? Are we testing ME?
Thank you! I am going to eat some of the donuts I got yesterday and then my partner is coming home early from work and we will hopefully be going for a nice meal somewhere. We have to base going out off baby’s moods so we shall see 🥲
Ugh. Mr Peeler has yet another speeding fine. I pay his rego, insurance, give him petrol money each week so he can at least pick up the kids from school, I paid his last (how many!) fines because he didn't even ring up to arrange instalments.. I just can't even. I get that he's dyslexic etc. But fucking hell! I'm not paying this one, fuck it. I'm working hard and trying to save so we can have things and he's just pissing around. The other day he was late picking up the kids because he just "popped in" to a mate's place in the afternoon and "had a whiskey," then found himself stuck in traffic. Wtf is he even doing drinking before picking up the kids?! I'm fucking relying on this fuck!
Just getting it out of me before I get home or it'll come out in an angry rush which will in turn make him angry, defensive or both, and the kids will be right there exposed to it all. Thanks for listening.
None of my business of course, but the relationship seems a bit unbalanced? You seem to be covering his expenses (and his arse)...what does he contribute, is he working? I used to be the major breadwinner in our 24 year relationship, but things took a turn about 10 years ago and, because of things, now I'm not. There's not a day when I don't think about that, and I do everything I can to be a worthy contributor to the household even if not financially.
Mr Peeler better like sleeping on the couch or better yet, outside because this is some bullshit. Being dyslexic or whatever isn't an excuse for the shitty behaviour he is displaying. And drinking before picking up the kids? Absolutely fuck that noise. He needs a good kick up the arse. If you don't do it, he's going to continue to behave irresponsibly. Don't vent to us to get it out so you're calmer when you get home. You need to unleash hell on him and set some boundaries because right now he is walking all over you. Sorry to be harsh but I just hate seeing good people get treated like shit.
No offense, I like and respect you, but you may need to have a verbal smackdown with old mate. It's hard because he's dad too, but yeah, he needs to pull his head in. Apologies for the tone. 💜 💜
Fuck. I'm so sorry you have to put up with this crap. You could potentiaaly think about seeing a relationsip counsellor or mediator. You need to be heard and his disrespect toward you needs to stop.
working on weaponising my ASD contrariness and defining my anxiety as being a stupid screeching monkey. Note that I am not stupid, the anxiety is a literal panicking monkey pulling on my hair and trying to make me do stupid things. Yes bitch. I am othering you. Because I do not like others trying to make me do shit (panic) that makes no sense because they're idiots who want herd validation for their idiocy.
This is called self awareness. Might be worthwhile to watch Monkey on Netflix. Each of the animal spirits depicted are an aspect of human nature. Monkey is clever but also a bit wild. Clever monkey tries hard to control wild monkey but the nature of monkey is irrepressible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-SUoHmpRdM
I think I'll watch a version of it. It always makes me a kinder gentler person ( but still ready to fight if I must )
i went out earlier to like.. go outside, got two blocks away almost got blown off my feet went fuck this and went home again. it started raining shortly afterwards. today can go in the bin tbh
Okay so I'm thinking I might wear my purple cardigan with black pants to my interview tomorrow. That cardigan has been super lucky with making a good impression on people, fingercrossed it comes through for me again!
However, today it's black leggings, brown shorts, and brown t-shirt (with jacket and beanie, of course), and let me tell you I'm feeling MIGHTY CUTE ✨️💖

Edit: the wind the wind! Changed from shorts to jeans* over my leggings. Function over form, woman!
My biggest complaint about clothing in Melbourne was that everyone (well, most people) wore blacks and greys all winter. I made it a point of being as colourful as I could be within that 'professional' dress code. Bright red backpack, purple scarf, assorted colours for beanies/gloves - contrasting against the black shoes/pants/jacket that I wore for work.
Yeah purple is a fruit. My new almost favourite t is purple and says fux war. yadda yadda it's a kyiv indie label shirt and I never miss an opportunity to spruik them.
Going to both of Lizzos concerts were the perfect end to a what has been a fucking hard year, they encapsulated every bit of happiness, heartbreak, pain, learning, and growth I've had through this time and reminded me of how much I love her and myself.
Have been in WA this week getting training for the new role. Everyone has been really friendly and welcoming which has been great! I miss fluffybutt :( One more day and I'm back.
TIL of the 4th Earl of Sandwich (via this thread). This excerpt from his Wikipedia page sounds like someone Aussies will be familiar with:
Sandwich retired in 1782. Despite holding a number of important posts during his career, Sandwich's incompetence and corruption were legendary, inspiring the saying: "Seldom has any man held so many offices and accomplished so little."
Thank you everyone for the birthday love yesterday 🥰 Ended up feeling a bit down because I had an awful day at work, and on top of that I didn't hear from any of my friends (which I'm not taking personally, but I was already in a bit of a mood lol). Husband took me to a nice Argentinian place in Black Rock for dinner and we finished with some cake at home in our PJs, so all in all it ended up being a pretty good birthday.
The place is called True South 😊 A bit on the expensive side, we spent $150 for just the two of us, but the food was really good and we were very full!
Completely forgot I'm supposed to be cooking for 5 tonight and not 1 heh.
shiat.
Emergency cashew chicken for the main. Fucking saved by 5 week old potatoes for chips (double fried none of this fandangled microwave business) for the entree.
Thing is I'm not actually shocked anymore. Yet another shooting. Honestly I think inside I have switched off a bit, perhaps as a coping mechanism from the constant stream of bad news emanating from the media.
Years ago only local news would be reported, maybe some international news and news was just on in the evening or what we read in the morning paper. Now it's news from everywhere, and truly most is not relevant to us, and all the time. It's insane.
Switch off the 24 hour news cycle.
And switch off 24 hour news notifications on your mobile too. Look at the news and weather in the morning, that's it.
After years of stressing myself out I have come to the conclusion if something is personally important I will get a letter, a knock at the door or a personal message or phone call. No point worrying too much otherwise.
I thought I'd get some movement in and walk to the cafe for a cuppa (which is a 22 minute walk each way jeez gotta love these car dependent suburbs). Stepped outside to right a potted magnolia that toppled over. Came right back in and ain't stepping outside if I don't have to. 10C feels like 0C no thanks.
We are in the cinema about to see Oppenheimer. I’m very nervous. I have spent the entire day translating the account of a doctor who spent the days following the bomb treating the victims so I am in a very biased mindset, I know. But god I hope this is done well. A group of colleagues and people I put out a private and public plea to Nolan and Atlas entertainment to include epilogue text in the film and acknowledge the plight of the hibakusha and the downwinders and the Marshallese and all the other global hibakusha. They were ignored. Urgh Urgh Urgh. I’m trying to not be pessimistic.
I had a ticket for 7:30 but just cancelled/refunded it. Really not up for a 3-hour hard drama tonight. The only thing I was looking forward to was the boysenberry choc top.
Are you able to share some photographic references of this idiot please. We must judge their felinity to understand the situation. Specifically if they have very cute toe beans with which they do idiotic things with.
i genuinely love the relationship that (I think) Australia and NZ have with each other. Sure, there's competitiveness, but when push comes to shove it takes a back seat to how close we are (geographically and socially). I loved watching the Ferns win tonight, and I epecially loved the moment between the Aboriginal and Maori elders before the Matildas match jist now.
I know that it's natural, and there's possibly a reason to it, psychologically speaking... but can I just say, fuck anticipatory grief. I know it's not its fault, but holy fuck it sucks to hurt so much before the actual event. And more so when it affects your loved ones so much.
There’s also the unpredictability of how you’ll feel when the event comes to pass. It’s not really something you can control no matter how prepared you think you are for it.
I’m so sorry to hear about it and hope you and your loved ones will be ok.
That's why anticipatory grief seems so fucking redundant on the surface, you know? Because ultimately you're going to go through the grief anyway, so why suffer twice? But yet here it is. And you're so right... everyone's reactions have been different now. I can only imagine what it's going to be like later...
This relates to yesterday's post re cat? Feels. Sometime knowing in advance is just as bad as being hit by surprise or accident. Be gentle with yourself.
I've been around death a fair bunch but this one hits differently in that it's very close to home while I'm more in a position to be supportive compared to when I was a lot younger and didn't really have the mental maturity to help. And as much as you don't want to call attention to it, it's as you said, the relief that the suffering and what not will cease.
lol my parents suggested we go see Penn & Teller in Vegas.. "tickets are only $76, that's not bad" (USD remember)
then you realise this is ticketmaster and also it's America where the prices are never the prices
$76 x 3 = $228? Nope.. $76 x 3 = $339.85
If there is a Order Processing Fee (why is there even one?) then what in the HELL is a Service Fee? And wtf is a Facilities Charge and why would that not be included in the ticket price? Then naturally + tax because America is dumb.
So yeah we're not spending $500 AUD on 3 Penn & Teller tickets.
Edit: I found another website selling them for $71 each and less of the nonsense fees and it came to $382.53 AUD total for 3 tickets instead of $500. Ticketmaster costs $117 AUD more just for being Ticketmaster. Turns out we're all soured on the idea now anyway so we're still not buying them. I've already seen them last time I went in 2012 anyway.
This reminds me of hotel invoices I would get in the US, with so many line items including fee this fee that. The advertised price is never the actual price!
Depends.. if they were a couple of nobodies that sort of money would be outrageous but they're legends. If you don't hold much value in their reputation then nah. It's still a fun show but I wouldn't pay too much to go back a second time. I'm glad I saw them the first time (when our dollar was worth more than theirs).
The US has no laws requiring the advertised price to be the "bottom line" price. It's just false advertising. But they don't do anything about it because the businesses lobby politicians to protect their racket, and half the country would complain that any government regulation is intently bad.
I spend idle thoughts on the painful past,
There's no one here to beat me up.
So I do it myself, mimicking their voices,
Laughing, I should have made better choices.
I used to daydream the feeling of being free,
I'm here now, so, why's it so hard to just Be?
Family stole away my childhood dreams,
I guess, trauma doesn't fall far from our ancestries.
Used and abused, I was their homegrown sin,
Some scars are deeper than the depth of my skin.
I was set up to fail right from the beginning,
So I didn't see that my escape was not an ending.
My saviour was not the white knight I needed;
But a wolf in sheep's wool, friend's warnings unheedee.
A decade of draining my bank dry by day,
At night, he took a different kind of pay.
I'm safe, so why does the fear stay the same?
They're wrong, so why is it myself that I blame?
Suffered and now I feel totally insane,
Scared to call it by it's terrible name.
I'm not stupid, just insecure and naive,
A good sleep I beg to give me some reprieve.
Avoiding but calling it biding my time,
I'll be fine just a bit of a therapy rhyme.
You make good choices everyday, you choose to be a good person and to behave in a good caring way to others and yourself. Sure, there are other things, like career choices, financial choices, those can be studied and learnt and if you are lucky and have skill and talent maybe, if opportunity comes, you will be able to steer yourself into a more secure place. Choosing to be with good people. That can be learnt too.
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” JRRR Tolkien. The work that you put into overcoming everything that’s weighed you down is inspiring and admirable.
My goodness that was a cold walk with the doggo. Listened to a podcast on the Rubik's Cube. It was invented in Hungary behind the Iron Curtain (maybe '82 I think?). A guy in America had invented a 2x2 version 2 years earlier. No way they could have met or seen each other's work. Worked in exactly the same way. They just came up with it at the same time. Really interesting.
I love this stuff. 'Multiple discoveries' are a thing throughout history, like American Thomas Edison being credited with the lightbulb, but British scientist Joseph Swan came up with the same thing at the same time, completely independently, and both were patented in 1879.
I used to have an idea that ideas actually are there for everyone to tap into. They come from somewhere and if you're attuned you recieve it and know how to respond to it. I got from hearing about multiple discoveries and playing improvised music in a bunch of settings for a number of years. At times if switched in, a drummer and bass player for example could sync to rhythms which were atypical and finish inprovised jams at the exact same time with the bass player (me) faced away from the drummer. At times I would enter a kind of trance and just breathe and my hands would move without thinking about them. Cool idea anyway.
kidcalhoon2 is sick again, so I'm WFH today. She just asked a question about space so we had a look at some hubble/webb images - little mind was blown, as mine is everytime. Also, how did I not know about ESASky - zoom out on this cluster to see in perspective..... 😮
hmmm - link is broken - copy paste this one - sky.esa.int/?target=271.840294483813%20-25.00071092962996&hips=DSS2+color&fov=0.1672274403516001&cooframe=J2000&sci=false&lang=en&hst_image=potw2325a
Do you know what's good value for money? Coles vanilla cream wafers for 80c a pack. Do you know why I'm tell yous this? Because I really like them and I don't ever want to see them discontinued. So next time grab a few packs. You'll be doing me a favour.
I do enjoy those wafer biscuits. I remember as a youngster my parents buying the peanut flavoured one from the Chinese or Vietnamese convenience stores
I used to get these really cheap hazelnut wafers when i lived in yerp , of god, the food there was so cheap and good, their home brands were like our top tier brands
Man I was so scared and angry at myself if I got a keloid around my nose piercing. Especially since it's been almost a year since I've had it and no major stuff up.
Did the salt water saline solution yesterday and today but in what I won't describe because it's gross enough, might've just been a pimple or something. Which I'm thankful for, but I guess good news.
Put a band-aid over my nose and it seems to have gone down. Yay for me!
Ooft. I got both nostrils done at the same time recently. One went south and the other didn't. The folk at the piercing shop in st kilda were awesome though, sold me antibiotic cream which was three times a day for four weeks!! But keloid looked liked it might form and now, they're both almost fully healed. Ears next. I'm in 2nd puberty so getting all my old piercings I had in the 90s re-done as a revisit to my youth and a new start. Might not do the centre bottom lip though, it was kinda annoying.
Was super weird because it's been a bit tender due to having to re-pierce it a couple of months ago (my stud fell out and couldn't get it back in, went to my piercing place who had to re-pierce it because for some reason anything with a curve just couldn't go in except for a straight bar that I stuck in the hole so it wouldn't close up on me until I went to the piercer). Changed it to a ring maybe a month ago and so it was still tender a bit, but it was fine, I was playing with it a lot. But I reckon I must've accidentally bumped my nose, or played with it too much for it to develop a pimple or an infection of some kind.
But the warm salt water saline solution seemed to accidentally pop the thing and yeah, like I said seems to have gone down.
Ooo fun, I've been wanting a nose piercing ever since I was 18 but had always been chicken shit (and poor) to get them so I finally got one last year. I'm just wearing and acting like the emo/punk kid 12 y/o me wanted to be. But I don't think I'll get the snake bite piercings they wanted, they look cool but they seem like they'd just get in the way.
Oh bugger, I'm supposed to walk to Mordi station to collect Mrs_Owl's car (she's kicking on with team drinks after work) and then run a few errands. I better get a wriggle on before the rain hits. Thanks for the heads up!
Good morning everyone! Day 25 of exercises and day 9 of tummy exercises completed. Also still off the alcohol. Foot is hurting a bit this morning, luckily I've got a sit down job for much of today. I probably aggravated it yesterday when I crawled under our big freestanding pizza oven whilst cleaning it and squatted heaps while cleaning and polishing the lower parts of the cooling racks and surrounding equipment. It's a grotty job but one I like doing because it's so satisfying at the end when it's so shiny you need sunglasses to look at it!
Don't get blown away people, it's wimdy out there!
Does anyone else find it somewhat insane that new drivers license is sent in the mail? It's got your photo, your DOB, your signature and your address on it. Not to mention the license itself is a form of ID?
Yeah it is quite weird. I mean, most bank cards don't even work until you enter a code into your app. But that's what happens when government agencies get privatised or given budget cut after bduget cut
I think it's more about incentive. If someone uses your card and it's not authorized the bank loses money that they could have otherwise lent or invested etc.
Someone steals your license, oops what a shame. There's no real consequences for VicRoads.
I made myself a bee weapon set with a bee sword and a bee shield in TOTK and tried it out on a black bokoblin camp with an aerocuda and oh my god i think i invented a whole new war crime.
Every time i swung my sword: bees. Every time my shield was struck: bees. Bees. Bees everywhere, biting everyone. Monsters falling dead from the sky from bees. Monsters flying off platforms to land on the ground with ANGRY, ANGRY bees following their parabola in perfect unison. Bees. BEEEEEEES
To quote his lordship: "It's like Macauley Kulkin at the end of My Girl!!"
Watching my place in the queue for a telehealth appointment on the HotDoc app go from 4th to 5th... who cut in line?!? Also I'm not entirely sure what the point of an appointment is when it's clearly going to be 30+ minutes later. Just give an hour window slot or something.
Update: it still said I was 5th in line when the doctor called me, only 15 minutes after my appointment time.
It's telehealth. Why isn't there an option for the Dr to ping you 10mins before it's time? The Drs already take time between appointments to type up patient notes. There's no reason they can't ping you when the previous appointment is over and get to you when they're finished with notes. Would give you enough time to drop what you're doing and find somewhere to take the call.
Paramount+ has some pretty decent stuff on it, but holy shit, do I hate not only its UI, but that some shows don't have subtitles even though it does. I was watching Catfish on Stan but it's not there anymore so decided to watch on Paramount+ and just... no subtitles.
(Also to preface, I'm hard of hearing, it's why I need subtitles, not that I have to defend myself but sometimes I do).
I took Foxtel Now up on their 10 day free trial. Their Google TV app is total ass. Finding things was nightmarish, and again not everything had subtitles
Neither my partner or I have hearing issues but we always watch with subtitles on as so many shows have really bad mixing
It has a lot of stuff I like, and also it has Ex on the Beach (trash TV yeah but I love when they get into fights and the drama). But yeah, it's so weird that shows I know have subtitles... just don't. I remember watching the earlier seasons of Ex on the Beach and the subtitles were out of sync, it was so weird.
Honest to god I watch pretty much everything with subtitles these days, not that I'm hearing impaired but the sound mix on so many things is so terrible and so many actors mumble and I keep missing out on important words or phrases. It's just a million times easier with subs. I'd be mad too and I don't even need the subs!
Sound mixing is terrible these days. There was a Vox video about it where a lot of movies are mixed for cinemas, and not the home because so many people have different sound systems.
Risotto was absolutely delicious. I normally add ham/bacon or diced chicken, this time I used some chicken mince. Plus mushrooms, pumpkin, dried tomatoes. Finished with a small amount of cream, parsley and parmesan. Tasted absolutely amazing.
I'd personally forgotten, victoria had even won the right to host the games until this happened. Andrews was damned either way. If he'd allowed it to go over budget the media would have criticised him for wastefully spending amid the cost of living crisis.
Victoria didn't win the right so much, more that it stepped up when other countries (and states) didn't. Durban in South Africa was supposed to host the 2022 games, but got stripped of the rights, so Birmingham UK hosted instead, but they were supposed to be hosting 2026, so a replacement had to be found urgently. The budgeted $2.5bn represented a good way to get infrastructure into the regions, but Andrews is right to say $6bn is just too high a price for what is now a relatively niche event. Oh, and that original costing was prepared by those geniuses at PwC.
Dinner is half way made. The rice with fruit and nuts is in the cooker. Mix for shemmy kebabs is made, just have to cook them. Might steam some vegies. Also have pumpkin soup ready made for starters.
Was gonna watch The Bear S2. But Disney app crashed. Turned it off and on again. Crashed again. Turned tv off/on. App now working. Stupid softwares on tvs. Why can’t it just work.
Well it's cold windy and miserable south of the river near the beach. Good oodie to the supermarket weather when you don't quite have change for the communal dryer and your clothes are washed but still quite wet. Ask here for other weather related suggestions.
I 'should' be doing more work on Operation Sort Shit but it's so cold I'm sitting on the couch in my oodie.
Also who was it who said they were playing the Sims? It's inspired me to try a new version of Strangetown.
Update: Zooks has joined me and is kneading the oodie while purring very loudly.
I usually hate shows like Idol and The Voice, but I'm all in for A2K which is Mr JYP putting together a K-pop group in the US. You can watch the first two episodes on YT.
This rain looks like it's pretty much settled in for the afternoon, so I guess this means a cold wet dog walk is on the cards. I don't think it's going to be a long one. Maybe if I can get myself a touch acclimatised I can find it within me to brave the back yard to pick some parsley for dinner.
Edit: Walk achieved with minimal rain. Parsley has also been aquired. An afternoon chill on the couch is on the cards until it is time to make the risotto for dinner. A quite literal chill probably, given the weather.
I've recently swapped from drinking too much coffee to drinking too much tea. I must say it suits my laziness when I can reuse the same leaves for 5 cups.
Seagoon Movies. Time Trap on Amazon. A competent movie with an interesting idea but small budget .Enjoyable. 2.5 hobbits.
Keep Breathing on Netflix. Interesting series , compare to Jungle, young woman has to survive in the Canadian wilderness and to do that she has to fight her inner demons that tell her she's a loser and to give up. 2.5 hobbits. I preferred Jungle with Daniel Radcliffe
Deliverance. This was a rewatch, watched commentary by the director and all the documentary material. Amazing movie. Very symbolic. Nature is uncaring and will defend itself if threatened. Humans are human, both cruel and kind, cowardly and brave. 4.5 hobbits
The last few times I've been to Taco Bell they've thrown fistfuls of hot sauce packets into the bag for some reason, so I've been collecting them. I just put one of the 'mild' packets onto some baked beans and that was an EXCELLENT decision! Next time I'll try the 'fire' one. Hot sauce on baked beans.. whodda thunk it? (everybody)
Yesterday I saw someone come out of a Maccas with the ol' soft serve which I actually haven't seen in a while. Reminds me of the old days when they were 50c. How much are they now? Anyone know?
50c was what I had in mind but yeah probably was even cheaper at one point in time. F--- is anything 50c now? Lol I feel like a wee bit of tomato sauce in a squeezy thing is like $1.10 now.
They're 70c-$1 now, depending on store. I'm young enough to only remember them being 60c, but I remember the day I had exactly 60c and stopped at a maccas in Melton and finding out they were 70c broke my heart. No soft serve was had that day
Thanks! Depending on store?? Is that how things are done nowadays...
That is truly heartbreaking. I probably would've tried with the 60c and a big sad face. I mean I suppose they could've just given you less in the cone but I guess that's not how business works....
I'll swing through a drive-thru and grab one every now and then as a treat. The choc ones are pretty good too. Not sure on price for them normally but they at least were doing them with a flake for $1 I'm pretty sure. That's what I'd get.
I've put off getting Aircon installed the past couple of summers, which has been manageable since the summers were relatively mild, but I think this year is the year I'll have to bite the bullet.
Holy crapschticks it's cold. I know I said I was having dinner but I was really just going around the place and finding any kind of food to put in my mouth.
Yes and it showed up nothing. We bought a Dyson air purifier and track our air quality on an app, and we consistently have spikes in VOC levels so 🤷♀️
Saw a post about the police drug and booze checkpoint.
I rarely drink, never done drugs, let alone while driving. But I low-key want to get tested just to see what it's like, considering that in the past 4 years, I've driven past three of these checkpoints without getting pulled over, but have witnessed being pulled over as a passenger every time lol.
