The next few days are going to be wild. Brace yourselves
Tomorrow, reddit will be shutting off 3rd party app access. If the twitter migration is anything to go by, that means that the wave of new users coming in the next few weeks will be much bigger than the wave we saw earlier this month.
Our lead techy admin @[email protected] is also recovering from broken bones and surgery, so she will be slower to respond to issues :)
All of that being said, we're as prepared as we can be. We're currently running our instance on hardware with excess capacity to spare, but who knows if it will be enough.
So, good luck to all of us, and see you on the other side :)
Commenting to help bump this comment up. We're grateful for the work you provide your community. Take care of yourself and do your best! We'll all see each other on the other side.
Yeah. It's bittersweet for sure. I used to thoroughly enjoy reddit 5 or so years ago... and at the risk sounding like a crotchety old man, "it's not as good as it once was!" Things change, and I'm eager to see if lemmy is as good as it is in theory. Federated site sounds so futuristicly positive!
Same, I've had a reddit account for 8 years, but I lurked since maybe a couple of years since it's inception. Used RIF for maybe 6 years.
I hate what reddit has become. I'm not someone who regularly participates with any communities, so I cannot really be relied upon to generate content, I'm a perpetual consumer rather than a producer.
I'm just looking for somewhere that gives me access to the latest news about the things I care about. So far Lemmy seems to have a lot if promise!
Do you have any advice on finding the subreddit equivalents? I followed a lot of hyperspecific subs like FortniteLeaks and Indiettrpg design and lfg stuff, and I've no idea how to find things like that here
RIF was how I found reddit in 2010. There wasn't even an official app for a few more years.
It's so sad how the apps got brought behind the barn and shot like they did. Sorta glad I found this community because of it. It's feeling like how I felt when I first installed Reddit Is Fun and seeing all the small communities.
So I was going to go check and make sure Joey wasn't working and well lol it's up. Also their subreddit mentions red reader being up. What's that about?
BaconReader went down too and I finally decided to make an account here. Interested to see how this goes but I know I won't be using the official reddit app
RIF has stopped working for me in the last hour, time to finally ditch the Reddit grip and jump ship, honestly not a massive difference in community now, and hopefully some of the smaller niche subs will move over to Lemmy, enjoying my experience so far!
Apollo is (well, was) one of my favorite apps. Just because of how well-designed and thought out it was, especially with the iOS design language. Sad to see it go, but at least I’ve got wefwef.
Memmy and Mlem are both native 3PAs based on Apollo. They both have test flight betas, but they’re also both full currently. Memmy has been submitted for app store approval though and should be available soon.
Now Twitter shitting itself in the name of forcing subscriptions is causing a mass migration to Mastedon. The Fediverse is going to get incredibly popular....fast.
I could deal with not having reddit sync, but opening twitter today and seeing that I have a tweet ration made me immediately sign up for lemmy. I imagine a lot of people are similar
The reddit app I used stopped working yesterday (yes I know why but it's funnier to pretend I don't) so here I am! Trying to figure out how lemmy works in the context of the larger fediverse.
On that note, jeroba throws an error every time i open it about how this instance is older than the lowest supported version, but it seems like i can still use most of the sites functinality? Just thought i'd mention that
Yep, that's a screw up by the Jerboa devs. If we upgraded to 0.18 we would lose captcha, and version 0.18.1 with captcha hasn't been released yet. So there is no way for us to safely upgrade to the version Jerboa wants just yet.
Mine isn't crashing on launch, but whew, seems like a few regressions in the latest build. Errors out the wazoo, lots of stuff not loading and hanging. I might dump the F-Droid version for now since I think the Play Store one is slightly older.
Like what? I'm about to launch an app just in time for the shutdown, my goal is to capture this wave and spread them out. If I haven't covered it already, I'll see if I can take care of it today
Jerboa kept crashing on me too. Im giving 'Connect' a try. It's ok - thou Im not a fan of the keyboard or the fact I constantly accidentally collapse threads
I was gonna keep lurking Reddit until Sync shut down, now I'm on Lemmy. Took me a little bit to figure the platform out tbh, having third party apps for it now seems to be great.
Was waiting for Narwhal to break and it never happened. Turns out the dev got a deal to not pay anything until he can release a ‘Narwhal 2’ that’s subscription only. Wasn’t an Apollo user but the dev got shafted and reddit didn’t offer anything close to what the Narwhal dev did. Still deleted my account as planned and deleted their app off my phone.
Honestly, it's really hard to say what will happen. I do think there's gonna be an exodus from reddit, however it's hard to say where people will go after that. kbin has been coming up in discussions about reddit alternatives, but same with some of the other federated setups. I've been searching for the past week for something that looks/feels like reddit and this is the closest thing so far. I will say, hopefully since it's going down on a Friday, there might be a lull until Monday before people really start coming in.
I really don't think that many more people are going to switch at this point. Not even sure why so many people think they'd be fine with everything the last two weeks have held, but the actual date of the API change would be the breaking point.
Many simply don't know about it. I was talking to a friend yesterday. I know he uses Reddit as we share memes and stuff. He said that he had no idea that that was happening. I helped him get onto Lemmy.
I mean, I knew it was probably hopeless that there would be any reversal but I stuck around until a day ago. I imagine that 3rd party app users, especially those who know they hate the official app, will be more likely to emigrate now that most apps cut off today. The only reason I used reddit as much as I did was because of Boost. I'm sure there are plenty of others who feel the same about other apps and stuck around until the end.
As for how many... I'm not sure. I saw a lot of people in 3rd party app subs posting about losing access but of those how many will go to Lemmy? We'll see I suppose.
Why not bring them along? I created a lemmy instance of the subreddit I used the most -- and posted about it in the subreddit. IF everyone does that (or promote existing lemmi communities), the traffic will move...
I stepped away from that website years ago, saw voat come and go, and am giving this a shot. So far, it checks all the right boxes! Welcome one and all.
I kept my reddit account until today, coping that Reddit will go back on their word and allow Apollo to continue working. Granted, it didn't. So I looped shreddit with a PowerShell script and sealed the deal today and just put the final nail in the coffin and deleted my account. Guess it's Lemmy from now on.
Agreed! I'm a part of the reddit exodus, but I've been looking for alternatives for a while. A shame so many of the early options were so racist/fascist. Here's to a federated community without all of that nonsense!
Hi, I'm one of the RiFugees, using the same name I did on Reddit. This looks like my place on lemmy for now, thanks to all who had the foresight to set it up!
First comment on Lemmy! I think that it'll be hard to for people to understand instances at first but hopefully over time the value of chosing how you interact will be clear
I'm probably gonna be taking a weekend off just to let the initial wave wash over us. Best wishes to Kaity, I'll see you fine folks on the other side. :)
