Damn, time to actually stop using reddit I guess. I wish I could say Lemmy scratches the itch, but there just aren't any of the communities I care about here. Just seems like there are a bunch of awful memes and copies of my least favorite subreddits.
There's definitely less content than on Reddit but I was able to find replacements for pretty much everything I was following, including niche stuff. And the less content is a plus too, gets me off my phone.
This attitude on here is really annoying. Starting a community is a big time commitment if you want it to be moderated and run effectively. A lot of us don't have the time to do that, no matter how much we want the platform to succeed.
Try checking out some other instances. Sh.itjust.works has some good stuff on it. I searched for Lemmy alternatives for reddit and found a few different instances that mostly scratch my itch.
That's what I'm seeing too. Mastadon is kind of cool, there are some cool things to see there but it's in the world of Twitter, Instagram etc where it's all about the self promoting, and not about building community really.
I was using RiF through Revanced and it logged me out and trying to log back in threw a User-Agent error. Reddit on web went down about 15 minutes later. It seems an unlikely error to be thrown because the site's going down (and I've never seen it using RiF legitimately).
Same. I guess it's time to pretty much cut out Reddit during the day.
Edit: thinking about it, probably most of the night too since I'm not on the computer all that much once work is over and if I am it's because I'm gaming or working on side projects.
Good night Reddit, it was good whole Huffman didn't fuck it up.
I was doing the same thing. I didn't realize how crappy Reddit had become until I was forced to look at Popular instead of my custom subreddits. Oh well, I was still using RIF to keep up on a couple of subreddits, but honestly, I've been making a lot better use of my free time, so maybe it's good for me for it to be gone for good
Former RiFfer here. Although I'm playing with Sync at the moment as I type this, I've gravitated toward Connect quite a lot. It's not Rif but it feels familiar.
Sync for lemmy is pretty close in my opinion. The layout isn't exactly the same but the different modes (compact, list, tile, big tile) and font sizes/choices can make it nearly identical.
A few things like how up/down votes work is a bit different but not crazy and the interface is really smooth unlike jerboa.
IMO none of them are a great replacement. I'm trying Sync right now and am enjoying it. previously I used Voyager, which was really different but felt more polished than most other apps. I really hope we can get a Lemmy is fun someday.
Hadn't heard of this one before, but it looks good. Love that I can fit like 8 posts per page. I don't see a way to jump to previous, next, or parent in the comments, but maybe that will be added.
Was expecting this a month ago. Guess its finally time to say bye to reddit. RIF was the only app that made reddit worthwhile on mobile. Sad to see it go.
Pretty bummed about that, but at least Sync seems like a good app.
I've noticed reddit getting worse and worse content since the API changes. I've had to filter like 6 different "rate me" subs that kept appearing on my feed.
Damn I secretly hoped it would just continue like that, I mean on the go I could have lived without being able to sign in, since I had most of my favourite subs bookmarked...
Yep, the Revanced workaround just died for me. I wonder if making a new fake app to access the API with would work again? I'm sure deactivations would continue to happen periodically even then. Redreader is an accessibility app that still has permission and is of course better than the official app, so I'll move to that if I want to use Reddit on mobile now.
Yes. It didn't just start working again on its own for me, but I got it working again: I updated revanced, uninstalled rif, added a description and URL in the app in Reddit settings (see below some people with user agent issues indicating that blank fields are a problem), re-patched the APK, installed the newly patched rif and I seem to be back in business.
Edit: also yes, I think they'll keep trying to break this kind of workaround, so I'm not thinking of this as a long term thing.
Full message:
whoa there, pardner!
reddit's awesome and all, but you may have a bit of a problem.
Make sure your User-Agent is not empty, is something unique and descriptive and try again. if you're supplying an alternate User-Agent string, try changing back to default as that can sometimes result in a block.
You can read Reddit's Terms of Service here.
if you think that we've incorrectly blocked you or you would like to discuss easier ways to get the data you want, please contact us at this email address.
when contacting us, please include your ip address which is: and reddit account
Do you know if this is a somewhat permanent solution? I'd like to stick it to spez for being a dickhole, but I don't think enough people actually cared to leave to make enough of an impact so if RIF will continue to work I would like to use it.
Im certain they will too. I exclusively used RiF and old.reddit for around 10 years (i guess before it was old reddit). I had no idea there were avatars for the longest time. All its gonna take is one or two more features before they say we "cant engage with the fun of reddit enough" and they drop old reddit.
And so say we all. Been a while since the Great Deredditing but is there any other app we can use for Lemmy that is closest to rif? Using Jerboa right now but theres still a lot to be wanted.
I've got Connect to look pretty similar to how I had RiF.
Was going to give Sync a try but after reading the terms I don't agree to the tracking for Google analytics and Amazon whilst Connect doesn't collect any data.
It seems reddit is actually down, as I can't even get it on a pc browser. I'm holding out hope that I can still rif anonymously, otherwise, I agree, it's bye bye morning/daytime reddit.
Me too. Rip in pieces, Reddit. Good thing I have gotten used to Lemmy and good apps for it have been developed quickly (I use Connect).
I couldn't be bothered to get used to RedReader as it's little bit different from RiF which was one of the best (if not the best) Android apps in regards to UI/UX. I do have the RedReader installed though in case I have to open a reddit url or look up something but I'm not interested in using it for longer periods. So I guess the lurking stops here.
The ship is sinking slowly so getting off of Reddit has been a gradual process.
I'm hoping talklittle (rif dev) either switches gears and does rif for lemmy or maybe releases the source code so the community can do so. I'd happily help them port it.
It broke for me today too but I downloaded latest revanced manager and applied the oauth patch again and it's working fine now logged in as normal, pretty easy fix really.
5 star overall rating in Google play, well deserved. I can't check the free ver cause it's hidden from store. I hope dev would try making Lemmy is fun as well some day :D
Update: if anyone's wondering, free ver sits at 4.8, i found it cause i had left a review on it
Geddit still works, it's an open-source read-only Reddit client that doesn't use the official API and uses RSS feeds I believe. It's really great for following the news and reading some wikis, though scrolling is painful right now.
Just noticed this, as I was still using it to view news, worldnews, ukraine, and a few other subs I consider essential. I guess I'm using old.reddit with RES until that breaks.
Yep this just started this morning for me. Since July 1st, RiF has been working for me as long as I was not logged in (no ReVanced Manager needed), but no more.
