TestFlight version is currently unstable - use App Store instead if you want

Hi everyone,

We are aware that the TestFlight version is pretty unstable at the moment, with a lot of bugs and crashing. This is because we are in the middle of rewriting our entire state management. We appreciate the testers who let us know what issues there, are but please be respectful when doing so.

If you don't wish to deal with the current instability of the TestFlight version, please download the App Store version as that is meant to be stable. When using TestFlight, you get all the latest features, but that also means you get the latest bugs too :D

As another reminder, creating bug reports in GitHub is still the best way to have your issue addressed.

Thank you to everyone who helps us test Memmy!

User Feedback

Thanks everyone for all of the feedback we are getting! It's hard to rapidly develop and push new updates while maintaining 100% usability, so your feedback is crucial to making sure things work the way they are supposed to!

If you are interested in getting the latest updates or chatting about issues and ideas, you can join the Discord server.

Please make sure that you are running the latest version of memmy as well. Changes are happening quickly and there are new features getting pushed daily. I suggest enabling automatic updates in TestFlight.

Happy scrolling!

ability to use iOS text recognition in images.

I’d like to be able to use the iOS text recognition in images that way I can easily translate memes that are in different languages.

Other than that, just want to say thanks for the amazing app. I really do not miss Apollo at all. Memmy has come a long way so quickly.

In addition, I love the purple space icon. It’s so great!

[Feedback]

After first trying Mlem, Memmy was my main Lemmy app for a good while, until I have been trying out some other ones. Coming back to using Memmy, I am pretty happy how well-rounded it is.

For me, the most important things are functionality and readability. The customization and font options are very nice. I especially like having a theme like the Golden Hour that is easier on the eyes, and still get to pick a theme color! With the red, it gives me a chocolate factory vibe that I enjoy.

The automatic reader mode for links is great for minimizing distractions on links, ability for switching feed link icons to the right is nice for being a lefty phone user, and the icon options are nice to have. The actual communities’ pages having the banner makes it feel more complete. The markdown editor seems well done and the Jump button is great for reading efficiently. The concise UI is very pleasant. And most importantly, the function of the things that are implemented are seemingly all working and are pretty snappy.

Having the post click first before the going directly to the link is actually really nice, because half of the time I try to click a post on other apps and end up clicking a link to somewhere. Also, the saving of a post draft is nice, although I wish there would be some pop up message or small banner that would say so.

Some things that could be improved: the favorite icon on the left list of communities does not seem to work, the Moderates feed does not load (but is a great idea), adding a Mark above as read button for the Feed would be very welcomed, the read messages do not appear in the Inbox, and lastly I tried to post this using the app and it only blinked and did not post.

All of that said, I’m really happy about the balance of features and functionality and will stick with Memmy for a good bit.

Compact view without on long titles

After the recent update the compact view is unusable for reading news boards, where nearly every post has more than two lines of text and the new memmy app cuts them off with a […] in the end. Can we please get the option to allow multi line titles in the compact view again? I am now only able to read the full headlines with deactivated coompact view which is annoying as I want to read the headlines not have a small preview image for every news.

Thank you.

Bug Report: iOS - replying to a comment results in replying to the main post instead

edit: appears to be fixed with a recent update!

If I use the right-arrow reply button next to the vote buttons at the bottom of the comment, it opens a reply to the main post instead.

If I use the “Reply” option under the three dot button, it opens a reply to the comment as expected.

I’ll try to get this on github at some point.

edit: observed on iOS 16.7.2, iPhone SE (latest model)

Creating a URL to host an image prior to publishing a post/comment seems like a security flaw

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/5623132

> When using the web browser to draft a Lemmy post/comment that contains a direct image upload, the instance creates a self-hosted URL that publicly shows that image prior to the user deciding to publish that post/comment. This creates a liability in several ways: > > > • If the Lemmy user happens to accidentally select the wrong image, such as one with personal or confidential information, that info is now public without the user consenting to its release. I would expect that to be illegal, or at the very least compromising? > > • Malicious users can mass upload illegal content to the Lemmy instance’s servers without that content being reported by users or presented to the mods of a community > > • Even deleting the post/comment that contains that image does not delete the URL or otherwise wipe the image from that URL. > > While the web browser does have a pop-up box that allows the image to be wiped from the URL, this option only exists for a few fleeting seconds before the box disappears. Additionally, on Lemmy.world, and perhaps other instances, this option is nearly illegible. > > ! > > I have altered the image to make the text legible. > > ! > > A similar, but more severe, issue arises when using the Memmy app. When using Memmy to draft a Lemmy post/comment that contains a direct image upload, the app creates an Imgur-hosted URL that also publicly shows that image prior to the user deciding to publish that post/comment. The same issues of non-consensual release and inability to delete the content by deleting the post/comment are present. However, further issues arise: > > • While it is possible to request that Imgur deletes an image uploaded by someone else (or anonymously uploaded by Memmy on your behalf, in this case), having to go through Imgur as a middleman just creates a further obstacle to remedying an accidental upload. > > • Imgur’s uploads essentially forbid any NSFW content, which is a stricter standard than some Lemmy instances. Not only might some images violate Imgur’s rules, but the ability to access them on the Lemmy instance will be short-lived if Imgur decides to remove them. > > • Using Imgur as the image host for pseudo-social media seems to be against Imgur’s Terms of Service. Their website reads “Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network.”. If Memmy continues to use Imgur this way, Imgur may take action and block Memmy from uploading images to it, and perhaps even delete all images previously uploaded by Memmy, therein removing them from Lemmy as well. > > • Malicious users can use Memmy to mass upload content that is illegal or otherwise against Imgur’s ToS to Imgur and beyond the moderation reach of Lemmy. This is obviously bad for Imgur and those who browse it, but it may also lead to Imgur taking action and blocking Memmy from uploading images to it, and perhaps even deleting all images previously uploaded by Memmy, therein removing them from Lemmy as well. > >• If Imgur, or any other third-party hosting site, shuts down, then its images are also lost from Lemmy. > > • Unlike the web browser, there is no option at all to delete the image from its host prior to publishing. > > What can be done about this? I think the easiest/best options may be as follows: > > • Make the instance-hosted URLs private so that only the user and admins can see them until the post/comment is published. If the post/comment is deleted or the user edits the post/comment to remove the image, either make the URL private again or wipe the image from it. > > • If a post/comment draft is discarded without publishing, wipe any uploaded images from the instance servers to avoid illegal content spam. > > • For Memmy, use the community’s instance as the image host instead of a third party like Imgur. > > • If there is some way to make the image appear in the draft without hosting it on a server, but rather hosting it client-side, that would be ideal. I don’t know enough about the relevant tech/coding so I don’t know if this is possible.

Make hide/blur nsfw per account instead of universal

Community Grouping (see Bean app) - a la Multireddits

Would love a way to group communities I find similar, that was I can view the group and get all the posts about a topic from multiple communities over many instances. Bean app has this feature. Think multireddits for a Reddit comparison.

2

Downvote Button

I’m on a server that has downvotes disabled. I’m wondering if we can get an update that hides the downvote button/slide when it’s disabled? I accidentally press it 2-3 times per day and the error dialogue can be frustrating. I was thinking there could be an option for what to replace the ‘slide right to downvote’ shortcut with when it’s hidden. Such as share or copy link.

Feature request

Inn B love the app, been using it since the original beta came out on test flight.

My feature request is to either mark everything in the inbox as read, or have it automatically moved to the all section in the inbox automatically after reading and closing the inbox to go back to the main feed.

In the image below, none of these comments need replying to by me from my comment, but to clear them I have to login into Lemmy from my computer to mark them as such.

Before anyone asks why not use the phone browser, for some reason I can’t login to Lemmy on any of my phones mobile browsers. This has been brought to the attention of Lemmy devs via bug report.

Search inside a specific community

I don't know if such an option exists, but if it does I have not been able to find it, and I think it would be a very useful feature.

4

When searching for communities have the option to order by amount of subscribers

3

Default sort in communities

Would it be possible to implement a default sort on community pages?

Like the default sort for my feed is Hot, but if I go to a community page I like to sort by new. But it defaults to the same as my feed sort (Hot).

Thanks!!

in app system browser

Sorry is this has been mentioned before.

I’d love to be able to have my system browser of choice be used while I am still in the app. It’s terribly annoying clicking on a link and leaving Memmy to view it.

As an aside, I love y’all’s app and appreciate you. Keep us posted on when you add your tip jar, eh?

Blocking a community immediately hides it from feed

Not sure if this is a duplicate, apologies if it is, but one thing I really appreciated about Apollo was that when I blocked a subreddit, it immediately was removed from my feed, and I also was not set back to the top of /all. Not sure how annoying this would be to implement, since it would probably require refreshing the feed with the new block in place and finding the right “scroll depth” to jump back to after.

Mostly I just want all of the random porn and things in a language I don’t speak that I’ve blocked to get removed immediately (especially the porn ones, since the bots seem to spam those communities, so I’m more likely to run into a few posts in a row).

To be clear, I know I can block NSFW posts, but I don’t want to do that. I don’t mind seeing some nudes or whatever as I scroll, but when I run into a series of yiff or whatever from a niche community that I’m not into, and I block it, I don’t want to see it anymore, not have to rage scroll to get past it

Upvote comments from “inbox”

Sometimes when I click on a reply it doesn’t come up exactly where the comment is in the thread and it can be hard to find.

It's everyone's cake day
  • That’s a lot of cake.

  • Is Memmy dead? No longer available on the Apple App Store
  • Arctic is a nice native iOS app that’s frequently updated. It’s in the App Store and a TestFlight is available in the [email protected] community.

  • Compact view without […] on long titles
  • Yes please!

Here’s an example of how Thunder handles it - each compact story can have variable height if required to show the long title.

It makes them somewhat inconsistent height wise but honestly nicer to read without the elipses.

  • User Feedback
  • It seems to be working for me right now. Have you disabled “Show Read Posts”?

    https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/e895f206-3d27-48a5-bcb1-c94a8383feed.png

This setting is reflective of your Lemmy setting, so look on Lemmy and see if it’s disabled.

Unless you are just referring to being able to see it as being read, which could possibly be that the indication needs to be a bit more obvious. Right now the title color is changing. There used to be a read icon which we can add back if that’s useful.

    Let me know.

  • Does anyone know where to view your saved?
  • I checked there, but it’s not there.

  • Is there a way to hide/block entire instances?
  • my instance level blocks

  • Memmy made it to Wikipedia!!
  • Is it because of the parentheses? I wonder if URL encoded link works instead?

edit this works for me in Memmy.

  • [Fewture request] in app system browser
  • iPhone Settings > Safari > Default Browser > [Preferred Browser].Its not a Memmy thing, its a system-choice.

    Should work for ya

Edit: Oh, you mean like "in-app". I thought in-app was ALWAYS Safari but I sort of remember being able to use alternative browsers in Apollo, although I feel like it was out-app rather than in. Hmmm

Edit: I think its a good practice to not view things in-app if privacy is a concern. I don't think its an issue with Memmy but there was a lot of hackles raised (rightfully so) that many apps like Facebook were abusing in-app browsing where people didn't expect to be tracked/datamined, especially if logging into personal accounts etc.

  • Font size change in last beta?
  • No problem! Hopefully, it’s a bit of an eye test for me right now :)

  • PSA: How to support the developers of Memmy, and instances
