Apple bows to Kremlin pressure to remove leading VPNs from Russian AppStore
  • Apple pulled out of the country after the invasion of Ukraine, but they left the AppStore up for people with existing hardware. Since they have a walled garden, if they kill the AppStore, they would also be killing access to things that Russian dissenters and refugees would need access to.

  • Apple bows to Kremlin pressure to remove leading VPNs from Russian AppStore
  • Thing is, if they kill the App Store entirely, they also fuck over Russians that already have iPhones and are fleeing the country, and or dissenting the government.

Looks like they’re trying to leave as much of the App Store as available as possible. That said, at some point the government censorship will become so bad that they might need to pull the plug entirely.

And that said, if they allowed proper side loading, this wouldn’t be an issue. They could just peace out entirely.

  • LG sees battery breakthrough by 2028 that has eluded Tesla
  • The Internet is terrible at understanding R&D timelines. We’re operating on timelines that can be 10-20 years from R&D to a consumer products. It’s been this way forever. NASA’s tech advancements were a great example of this.

If you want check on the progress of big scientific advancements, you can’t be looking back at the papers published last year, you need to look back at the papers published a decade ago.

And that all being said, this specific tech is at the end of R&D pipeline. It’s going into scaled manufacturing. It’s going to be a thing you can buy soon.

  • LG sees battery breakthrough by 2028 that has eluded Tesla
  • This thing is happening though. If you look up “dry coated electrodes,” you’ll see that this has been in development for over a decade, and manufacturers are now starting to build manufacturing lines for this. It’s not a lab experiment anymore, this is going into mass production.

  • LG sees battery breakthrough by 2028 that has eluded Tesla
  • Dry coated electrodes are pretty legit, and lots of manufacturers are starting to build up scaled manufacturing processes and tooling for it. It’s not a lab R&D thing anymore. This is going be a thing shortly.

This one is at the end of the R&D pipeline. Technology advances can take a good 10-20 years before they’re available in consumer products.

If you read the article, you can see that this isn’t a new research paper. It’s a company telling its consumers and investors when they plan to have production at scale.

  • Apple bows to Kremlin pressure to remove leading VPNs from Russian AppStore
  • The real answer is to let people load apps from outside of the App Store.

If you’re going to run an AppStore, you’re going to be subject to the laws of every country, and you’ll have to segment it by region.

  • Apple bows to Kremlin pressure to remove leading VPNs from Russian AppStore
  • TL;DR: they stopped selling hardware in Russia, but people still find a way to import it.

It also looks like they are still maintaining Russia’s region in the AppStore.

  • Community for moderation accountability?
  • Sorry, long day and I’m pretty tired. I mistook “comm” as communications, not community.

  • Sanders: Supreme Court Is “Out of Control” and Must Be Reformed
  • I love Bernie, but he’s 82 and has heart disease.

  • Community for moderation accountability?
  • A couple of thoughts on the timeliness critique.

One of the big reasons that the removals, reports and comms take forever is because the mod tools are trash. People simply don’t see the notifications until they log in to the web app and look in the header.

Another reason that stuff takes forever is because people don’t volunteer to mod. Lemmy world videos has had requests for moderators out for weeks. Next to know one wants to volunteer their time to help the community.

If we want fast moderation, we need more eyes. Especially since Lemmy doesn’t really do a great job of sending notifications.

  • If the president of the US is going to step down from an incumbency race, I’ma bet that’s an Oval Office or White House press briefing room announcement - with the full White House press pool invited. That needs as much attention as possible so the maximum amount of people know what’s up on the Nov ballot.

  • Telegram says it has 'about 30 engineers'; security experts say that's a red flag
  • Yeah. The most secure companies I’ve worked at actually only had a small group, of very competent people, who were paid well, treated with respect, and not presented with a lot of organizational or infrastructural red tape.

I’ve worked with teams of 10 that had shit locked down tight, and teams of hundreds who had software that was exploding and getting exploited left and right.

If someone tells you more head count = security, I would not consider them an expert.

  • Telegram says it has 'about 30 engineers'; security experts say that's a red flag
  • To be fair, in a large company, there is usually only about 30 people who are actually good and know what is going on, and hundred of others who are checking in trash.
