Got the news - I got the job!
Funny thing was, they were trying to call me all week but they thought I wasn't answering until they got through and found that they were calling the wrong number - it had somehow been entered wrong, so just as well I sent my resume through to the original person!
Just a few extra bits of paperwork and the induction next Thursday and then we'll see when I actually start (probably week after).
Well I spent all afternoon doing some online learning modules so I'll confine it to ice cream tonight, but I'm thinking some takeaway and bubbly tomorrow night.
My friend and I have yet to get together to celebrate the house sale so it'll be a double celebration!
I got approval from work to travel home during Christmas / NYs and work remotely so i'm going homeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee to family. Best part is it's a surprise so i'll land home and surprise mfer my parents! So excited wooohoo!
Also hope that my organs are safe cuz im going via Scoot. An other airline was charging $1000 more so fk that 🤞
Hooray!!!! It will feel great reuniting with family and especially as a surprise - and provide a nice opportunity to take stock of where you're at in life abroad :)
A bit of a ramble here. So you know when kids are young and they get asked "what do you want to be when you grow up?" A doctor, a vet, a teacher. And your reply "well you can be anything you want to be".
Then they get a bit older and they still have those dreams so you have to let them down gently. A doctor maybe not. There's blood and guts involved and you're not really good with that kind of stuff are you? A vet. Well you've gotta shove your arm up a cow's rear end. I mean they give you a glove and all but still are you prepared for that? A teacher. Um yeah they get paid good but you gotta put up with arsehole children and their arsehole parents. Not enough pay for that.
Anyway after much consideration, my daughter would like to do something sciencey. That's cool. She has her heart set on uni. She's smart. Whatever makes her happy. My only question was "Does this mean you're not leaving home anytime soon because Mummy would like her sewing room back?" Her response "Have you seen the cost of houses lately? We are in a crisis. Nah it's probably best I stay here".
The thing is from the time she was little she has always wanted to do something sciencey. Sure shit changed along the way but she always had that as a goal and her mum and dad will support her no matter what. We are investing in her future so at least she can have one. I don't ever want her to leave home.
Yeah, I've got to take them for seven days and not interact with anyone until I've scabbed over. Honestly, feel fine apart from an ear ache and the rash itself being annoying. Have been given a cert for next week as well, but might just WFH and save the leave for a time when deaths actually at the door.
Been a while since I've been but that water isn't too good. Swimming through a shitload of plastic and probably a thin layer of bunker oil.
Also poor form award to the wanker who was sinking tinnies and yelling at women that they looked hot. The beach should be a place where you can get your kit off and not have that shit happen.
mmm, unless you look really closely at the door - you can't see the little divot but hopefully it's gone with the second coat of paint. Else, do I wait for paint to dry and putty+sand again?
If one more person knocks on my door I'm gonna let them full have it. 3 people this week trying to sell me shit. this is my home. I dont harass you in yours so leave me the f alone.
We even have a big red notice on our office door at work not to knock (we are IT, but not end-user support, there's a whole team for that). Knocking/thumping/banging on the door is an almost daily occurrence when someone can't work out how to unmute their
Zoom meeting...
Thankfully we have permission to tell them to take a hike but it's still annoying!
It looks like I've got shingles (appt later to confirm since I'm developing the symptoms my specialist on Wednesday said to keep an eye out for)... What a pain in the fkn arse!
That's going to be an embarrassing email to my new section since it's contagious to those who've not had chickenpox.
@bananafungus@bot001 if they were born before 2005, yes, there's going to be a cohort who could potentially be vulnerable to chickenpox who didn't get vaccinated before it became part of the 18 month NIP vaccines.
I'm planning to get the shingles vaccine as soon as my GP gets stock, the rules changed on Nov 1st and now some are eligible for free. I don't think I am but it's meant stock has got stretched =p
I didn't get any work done yesterday, but I did get started today - the trick was to tell myself I am good at what I do and people need me, and actually believe that for long enough to get the dopamine going. It probably helped that I caught up with someone from work yesterday. Stupid brain tricks, it's like working with a petulant child sometimes to just pay for a roof over my head
A bit random. I see two possibilities here. One is that you are concerned for the safety of all those working under powerlines.
The second possibility is that you are in fact a serial killer, who will be targeting those walking while looking down at their phones. "Look up and live" is as much ultimatum as warning. In some obscure corner of the internet we will find a detailed manifesto where you explain these people have been infected with a social media-transmitted virus that turns them into phone zombies. You are trying to cleanse humanity of the virus before it is too late.
Have had this happen, something dies in ceiling or under house. Not much can be done but wait it out. Could call a pest controller to come search for it to remove, but no guarantee they will be able to find it or access it. Open windows to air out, or some room spray or scented candles to mask to smell. It’s pretty horrid while the smell is there, you have my sympathies.
This is exactly what has happened, I just located it by nose. I’m pulling fresh air through and am using nilodor but the cross breeze just seems to be spreading it 🤢
Prismacolours?... How do they compare to others? I've bought prismacolours the last few times, but now I'm thinking about Faber Castell polychromos....?
I only have a 30 minute 11am meeting today so it'll be good to get out in the sun. I might pop over to IKEA and have a poke around. I haven't been for a couple of years and I need some new tea towels anyway so that's a good enough excuse. Get me some meatballs with loganberry sauce or whatever that weirdo berry is, and gravy.
Got a full day of meeting and i'm still expected to have a bunch of extra work done. One of the meetings later on is why I havnt done a certain aspect of work. I'm going to laugh and say "what would you like me to have dropped to get that done?"
I'm not even in your household but my disappointment is immeasurable and my day has been ruined. never forget the cook rice button unless you want your family to hate you ;(
Have you tried some of aussie freeze dried stuff? Ours go apeshit for salmon and chicken, not so much emu cookies but a mates cats happily took those right off our hands
I appear to have discovered a new method for sprouting stubborn seeds: give up and order seeds of a different variety. Knowing there is competition on the way could just do the trick. It appears to have worked for my artichoke seeds, anyway.
I think there might be a bit of a plague of those "pretty white butterflies". Coming back from IKEA and I was startled by how many of them I saw in huge clusters. Most looked like they were trying to get it on too, in pairs.
I was shown an ad to an electric note device. You write by touch and erase by pressing a single button. Reviews said accidental writing and erasing happened often, and once the battery runs out there's no way to use it anymore. It inspired me to buy this: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/mini-magnetic-draw-board-assorted-43112357
very useful when I want to write 5 words but don't feel like it's important enough for a post-it. No electricity needed, no accidental writing, quarter of the price, and fall damage resistant.
Looks fun. Not every problem needs a Rolls Royce solution. Cheap and simple is often the most environmentally friendly too. A basic white board could also do the trick.
I have white boards for more permanent things. I like this for super temporary things because I don't have to cap/uncap the pen, or pick up a detached eraser to wipe it.
There's a rather famous story about the first space race - the US spent millions on developing a biro that would work in zero gravity - and failed to do so. The Soviets used cheap pencils.
That urban legend is only sort-of true. NASA also used mechanical pencils at first, but they're flammable. The money invested in the space pens wasn't paid by NASA. And once the space pen was released, the Russians used it, too.
I parked my car in a dubious spot at the station because I was about to miss the train and didn’t have time to circle around. It was one of those spots where either side has parked too close to the line. Why people don’t park properly? Anyway, I hope to get back before those cars have been moved. I have no faith in those line parkers.
It's been glorious going out in the city. If I wasn't trying to get my sleep pattern back in order and also not a solo brown woman I would've stayed out walking for hours.
e: also going into the city feels so much more enjoyable atm after the insanity of Singapore. So much space! ...I'm sure I'll go back to feeling meh about it in two weeks time
I remember when public transport was divided into local neighbourhoods, and the bus driver would use a hole punch to mark the date and time. Sometimes they'd punch the wrong place and you'd get an extra day free.
Going to school on the train, in winter the connie would sling a metal cylinder filled with hot coals in each compartment to put your feet on so they didn't freeze.
Ok here's my story of moths. My mum has this rule. Do not leave clothes on the line overnight. No exceptions. Why, because black clothes attract moths. When I moved out of home, l left my clothes out thinking my mum was just paranoid. The very first item I pick off, a dirty big fucking moth flew right into my face. Never again.
Hah! Back when I was a kid, the milk was delivered by a horse & cart - in East Ringwood. The stables were in East Ringwood village next to Dublin road opposite the train station. 3 gorgeous clydies.
I feel like I'm going to be one of the youngest ones here, but I am old enough to remember when installing things on your computer the window would be full screen and have a blue background.
(I was going to mention dial up, or renting from Video Ezy/Blockbuster, but they're too easy and also my local Blockbuster went out in like 2016 or 2017?)
I remember renting from video shops and if you didn't have your card you couldn't borrow. Then towards the end it was "ah just give us your name and the password and that should do it".
I remember when kids made their own way to school. Most rode, some caught busses or walked. Very few were dropped off.
I think of this often, as my kids either ride or catch the bus and this is considered weird today. When I was a kid, there were hundreds of bikes in the racks. Today, there might be 20, usually fewer. Maybe a dozen kids are on the bus. But try and get a car near the school and you'll be in a queue. They all get dropped off/picked up these days.
Can confirm this. During primary school we walked or rode our bikes (4 sibs). Getting dropped off in a car meant you had a broken leg/foot. Secondary school I was at a boarding school. On weekends we'd pick up a sandwich lunch from the school kitchen and get on our bikes and go for a long ride. Had to be back by sunset for rollcall. No supervision. The miracle was that we didn't get in trouble - not even close. Couldn't do that nowadays - the school authorities would be screaming and so would the parents. We'd also take one of the school dinghies and go fishing all day - the kitchen took the loot and served it up for breakfast the next day.
I was dropped off in the morning, but would either catch the bus or walk home. Mostly I walked, as spending money on lollies on the way home seemed a better option than spending it on bus fare.
That was in the days you could choose your lollies individually - prices at that time ranged from 2 for one cent for things like chocolate freckles up to 2c a lollie for some fancy things. Or you could just let them choose by ordering mixed lollies - 20c of mixed lollies was a pretty standard amount.
I'm old enough to remember going to my friend's place in Dubai (where I grew up) and her mum would take us to the Laser Disc rental store to borrow movies. Or I guess I'm old enough to remember Dubai when it was pretty much mostly sand!
I remember when Healesville Sanctuary had way too many emus. They were really scary, and one stole my lunch.
I also remember when Healesville Sancuary had way too many ibis. I didn't have my lunch stolen, but they would swarm anyone eating and it was a very near thing.
I’m a little late to this today due to things but I still remember the Commodore 64 and making my own mix music tapes with the good old cassette player.
Fancy. We had a Tandy 16k. Which was upgraded to 64k. We had fancy acessories though - namely a good old cassette player. Before we got that we had a book of programs we would hand type, but if you turned it off or lost power everything was lost. The tape player was a game changer, you could save programs you had typed out, and get copies of things other people had done - the birth of illegal sharing right there.
Tried for T Swift tickets again, as hopeless of an exercise as the first time around. All gone. Delaying the sale of some tickets changes nothing on chances of getting.
So I looked at my energy usage over Tuesday and Wednesday when it was warm and I did use my aircon a bit. As far as I can tell aircon use only slightly increased energy usage which would suggest my a/c is fairly efficient.
split system? yeah they use bugger all so long as you turn it on before it heats up outside. Very good at maintaining temperature, but far less power efficient to cool it down from hot.
Scooted along the Yarra from Docklands to Swan St bridge and back then around the marina/New Quay and back home. Did some fancy maneuvering. That was fun. Lots of people out enjoying each other's company.
That sounds really nice. I sometimes think it would be good to live inner city and be able to do things like that. But I love pets and gardening too much.
Going on radio again tomorrow and I found out today that the 3/3a tram doesn't go through St Kilda any more. So now I have to go to Malvern 😭 to catch a tram.
Though tomorrow afterwards my sister is having her birthday dinner at a KBBQ place (which I'm pumped for but also jealous because I wanted to do KBBQ for my dinner last year but mum didn't want to do that) so mum suggested that she can drive me to St Kilda. So whoo!
Ah dang it. Minipeelers want to see the FNAF movie but it's rated M. Knowing them (they love jump scares and horror themes) they could handle it, but they aren't legally allowed to so they are more than a little upset about it!
So I can take a 10 and 12 yo to see an M movie as long as I'm there to watch it with them? It would be cool if I don't have to pretend they're 15. Miniest would fail, although she said she's suffering from a condition that makes her short 😂🤦🏻♀️
My nearly 10yo went with his Dad. He loves the games, and has no trouble separating fiction from real life. He loved it!
I will admit to a moment of questioning my decision, but you know your kids best, and you know if they'll cope with a more mature film.
They're both familiar with the games and the Elder loves the books. The separating reality from fiction is an important factor isn't it. I've always been at pains to point out the difference, whether it's a scene from a movie or a picture of an influencer lol
It was my partner's birthday yesterday and I made him a playlist called songs that convey how I feel about you.
He listens to one song on the playlist and tells me it was a pretty solid playlist. However, regarding the two heartfelt Taylor Swift songs on the hour-long playlist, he tells me I should switch them out for insert other songs that do not convey the same meaning as the Taylor Swift songs at all because they were "better". He didn't listen to the songs.
Maybe he's just not a lyrics person, though I'd think the title would convey that the lyrics are important. It sucks that I'll have to explain that and also that we are probably not on the same wavelength. I'm debating ending it.
Don't write it off completely... I'm not a lyrics person at all. For me it's about the feel and emotion in the music with the vocal - but not necessarily the lyrics, you know....
There's a thing called frisson (I think), which is that rush of emotion you get when listening to a song, look at a piece of art, read a passage that you really understand etc. Example for me is the guitar riff kick in my previously mentioned Fix You by Coldplay... The lyrics are ok I guess, but that guitar at 2:35 just hits so hard every time I hear it...
I think that's a little extreme in the reaction department. Maybe just talk to him about how you feel instead of making such a big decision without communicating first?
He's not a mind reader, and maybe he just doesn't like Taylor Swift?
You're going to break up over a playlist? Look I hope this doesn't come across as harsh but it does strike me as an over reaction. Not everybody is a Taylor Swift fan. I personally don't care for her and I don't think she can sing particularly well.
It's possible you have different love languages and he can't necessarily compute your gesture. But if you say, made him a lavishly difficult cake he might love it.
Play Song Pong with him! Make a new playlist, get some nice booze, and you take turns adding your fav songs to the playlist and listen to them, it's super fun and you'll learn a lot about each others music preferences. Back when my partner and I were just FWB, he introduced me to the game and we introduced each other to so much new and cool music we hadn't heard before.
Mr Seagoon is a bit of a muso himself and it took me a while for me to understand that he enjoys all kinds of music and the different emotions it can evoke. It's art. So when he plays a song for me often it's sharing the art, it's not telling me a message. I've had to learn to not be literal.
I'm just gonna point out the playlist you made was called 'songs that convey how I feel about you'... so yeah. Also the reception is kinda graceless.
You mentioned things are still pretty early on though. It might be that he's uncomfortable with the romantic messages, trying to softpedal that by changing the songs, and you guys aren't on the same wavelength. Which sucks.
It's your choice what to do and depends on whether this is a pattern of behaviour/there's a consistent one sided dynamic but I'm sure there's a guy out there that would be over the moon to get a mixtape.
Picture this, we were both butt naked banging on the bathroom floor
That was a big hit when I was in primary school, mainly the "wasn't me" bits - though I had to be careful not to let my mum overhear me singing it heh.
Anyone remember bloody Sean Paul and SHEK DAT TING MIS CANACANA, SHEK DAT TING MISS ANNABELLA
Has anyone been getting group spam texts? Like it'll be the scammer and then one other person? It's very weird, all the spam texts I've gotten in the past has just been one person until this week and now it's like group ones.
Hunting nappy bins at the moment. For zee cat litter. Turns out when you live in a house that isn't basically an open tent you can smell the turdbucket. Anyone rec? We're looking at nappy bins for the scent control, will just hold pee cakes, and we want to be able to put our own sugar spun garbage bags in, none of that tomee tippy individual baggy shit.
three cats, one with renal issues so he pisses like a firehose. We have a bukket, but it's rapidly depreciating in value :/ Also a pain when we do the weekly complete-empty-scrubdown of the boxxen.
so looking for higher volume better stank containment. The new place has the laundry / litter box on a western facing side of the house so it's kinda accelerating matters, even with religious cleaning and enzyme spray
🎶🎶I ran into her on computer camp
(Computer cabin war)
Hard core, it started like a bore ending up on the floor
(Come on now tell me more)
Seen as supremus, you better know she's a genius and a Venus
(Tell me more; was it love at first sight?)
That's right this was god-given grace with a face you could praise
(Tell me more; did you put up the fight?)🎶🎶
Found an old and very thumbed copy of Dam Busters today. I just scanned thru the book and read a chapter. They were so determined and so brave. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Chastise
Great movie and one of my fave wwii movies , I got that new 4k th other week 👍 So finding this book, which I had never seen before in a shop was a real bonus.
I just got an email from Catch Mobile apologising for the network outage. I guess that mean they use Optus. I honestly didn't notice anything wrong and had no idea I'd been affected.
