Early Access: Become a tester for Boost for Lemmy and share your feedback 🚀
Hi Boost gang,
The first version of Boost for Lemmy is almost ready. If you want to test the app for bugs and give feedback before the app is published, follow this link https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.rubenmayayo.lemmy to enable an early access option on the Boost for Lemmy Play Store listing.
How do I hide, or limit the height of images people embed into their comments such as this one, in Boost?
This image is huge for example, and ideally I just want a small version I can tap to expand, and not have to scroll past this whole thing (plus it seems like it's cropped on the sides, only showing half a phone screen on either side - or maybe that's the full image I don't know?).
Why keep the old one installed at all? Surely it doesn't work since they disabled the API, as absolutely fantastic as it was, now it's just a dead app taking up disk space.
Quick question. I thought Reddit's API price debacle (the entire reason I'm here instead) forced Boost for Reddit to shut down, or at the very least charge a high price. I'm surprised to see it still working. What exactly is going on?
In my experience veta aps usually have more, to collect statistics, crashes, and things like that. Once tha app is stable usually It need less collecting but I can be wrong to
I just installed the app and so far it's working pretty well, though if I'm being honest, I am definitely a little concerned by all the baked-in tracking.
In terms of features I'd be interested in seeing there are three that come to mind:
Community icons in compact/ dense views. While Lemmy is still in its infancy, I have to browse c/All most of the time and being able to visually see the community the post is coming for is definitely helpful for browsing.
Multiple accounts in one feed. In my opinion, this is one thing that Lift-off has over every different Lemmy app. With so many instances with varying levels of federation, I find being able to browse all my accounts at once to be a very convenient feature.
Being able to download to an SD card. I know SD cards are a dying breed, so this is probably low priority for you, but as someone with very low internal storage; but a very large SD card, it's always a welcome feature when I can find it.
Overall I would say this app already shows a significant amount of polish. Hopefully the development can continue even further.
It's gorgeous. Just as I remember. Like it was never taken from us. I was trying out a couple other apps while waiting for the beta and I immediately uninstalled both of those and removed ads for Boost. It's a really well designed app in all aspects. Thanks Rubén!
Its so nice to have Boost back! Thanks so much for all your hard work, Im so very appreciative!
Btw, brand new comments are showing as 9 hours old, my own included. I'm in Japan, on a Samsung S23, let me know if there is any debug info I can give.
Thank you so much!! For everything! For making this app for reddit, and then remaking it for here, and for taking the time to see my comment, and fixing the issue! I am so very appreciative of all the work you've put into it, I can't imagine how involved a project like this must be. You've done such a great job. It is so nice to be back on Boost again!
That's weird. I have 2FA (it always prompts on the website) but I was able to log in without putting in my token (unless my 1password autofill automatically took it behind that scenes?)
Oh man, use the kbin.social web app. It's good. The only Boost functionality that I really really missed was the ability to hide read posts.
It looks like kbin.social isn't supported as an instance on Boost for Lemmy? So I just signed up on startrek.website with my same kbin.social username so I could check it out, and so far it's great
I can't yet. I mod two functionally dead mags that I'm trying to keep going. It's just small populations, and from Reddit, it seemed either no one jumped over OR they just don't care enough to find the community here. One did well to have 1 post a day in Reddit that wasn't spam. The other was pretty active, but it's a niche game so.
When it comes out, I'll probably wait until cross-mod comes out. Or I'll just keep an eye on it from Lemmy and mod from kbin as needed.
I've been happy with Sync but more polished competition is a good thing. First thing that bothers me here though is seeing total "karma" counts on my profile. That's not something I want to see.
The viewable list of user uploaded images is a great feature though and one I hope to see replicated.
The only thing I'd point out is that downvotes are disabled on my instance so it would be nice to hide the downvotes in the app but that's a minor nitpick. Also I don't think it prompted me to put in my 2FA code when I logged on.
Thanks for your hard work on this! Paid for premium immediately :)
I'd love to see integration for custom emojis, for example accessing Lemmy on the web I am able to type : and then an emoji name and it will autofill emojis from my instance.
Same here, I don't think I ever bought a premium app faster. Bought it before even changing any settings. Boosted the rocket once and still only paid a fraction of what Sync is asking. And it's the far better app already, no-brainer.
Am I doing something wrong when Im not able to download the app in the store? Says "coming soon", I applied to be a tester. But can't download the app. On Android
It is lovely to be back on boost! :) I did miss it an awful lot :) It's exactly as I remembered, once AMOLED dark mode and theming are there, I couldn't think of a feature I'd want :)
Adfree bought! :)
I opted out of the GDPR stuff (I'm in the UK) and am Ad-free, is that all that's needed to get the Amazon tracking stuff out the equation for me?
I got it and had a bit of a hard time getting in the beta. But I got in, and I'm loving it. So much that I sent up the no ads payment. Didn't really see any, and I hope I don't, but I just wanted to say I appreciate the dev and wanted to show support. Thanks again for being here, loved it for Reddit, really love it again that's it's in Lemmy!
Lovely work, Jerboa is nice, but old habits die hard and boost is what I'm used to.
My only complaint is that BankID won't allow me to pay to remove ads, but that's not really the fault of the app.
Can anyone who is a moderator confirm that they don't have access to mod tools? As an admin, I can't see an option for checking out reports, or for a way to ban/purge users. Seems like I still need the Web browser for those things.
Thank you for developing this app! Being able to use Boost again has felt like being right at home. Your UI/UX design is just amazing, and I've sorely missed it since Reddit's whole thing happened.
This is amazing, thank you! I'll be buying ad free the moment I finish this post.
For anyone unable to login due to 2FA: a workaround for now is to login elsewhere, disable 2FA, login to Boost, then re-enable 2FA. Bit of a pain because you get a new token but as long as you don't log out of Boost it appears to stick.
Long time boost reddit user. Feels natural again. Already bought ad free on principle lol. After the whole Sync for Lemmy price gouge fiasco. Like jesus
Where does one give feedback?
Edit: right off the bat the blur for nsfw needs to be a bit more muddled. I like nsfw and stuff and tend to stick to /all so it shows up often. But the blur isn't really doing a food job when it's like just a out of focus naked woman compared to a general sense of shape the other apps ive used hit. There's no plausible deniability lol. And I just need to see red and the title to know not to click gore stuff
Is there a way to see a list of the posts I have upvoted and downvoted like I could with Boost for Reddit or is tracking those metrics limited by the lemmy platform? I have been missing this info in Jerboa and just assumed it would be tracked in Boost for Lemmy.
That's disappointing. The only reason I thought that might not be the case is because when I installed Boost and linked my accounts for the first time I was able to scroll through my home feed and see my upvoted posts made in a different app. Maybe the Boost app can keep track of upvotes and downvotes made within the app somehow as a special feature?
Thank you. I am trying it out right now and it feels great.
Would it be possible to add the number of posts in the search results next to the number of members when searching for a new sub? It just so happens that many subs are created but content is missing. So it would be nice to know in advance how much content is there before clicking it.
Also would it be possible to retain the search results? Whenever I click on an empty sub and go back, the search results have been purged and I need to start a new search. Quite annoying if you are trying to find me subs.
I've been using Sync while waiting for Boost and I've come to really like the feature that allows you to upvote posts by slightly swiping left on the post. Would love to see that adopted by boost!
Youtube links default configuration is to open in the external app, but it still seems to try to load internally when clicking thumbnail or link in a comment (opens externally from main link though), and gets stuck on spinner (something to do with preroll ad in video?)
When someone replies to your comments, you get a notification. But clicking the notification takes you to the 'mentions' tab, instead of the 'replies' tab
Hi, if I long press the home screen icon to access quick actions like Local or subscribed it launch the app in blank with no content (only the navigation bars). In order to fix this i have to close and launch the app again.
I was able to log in under a test account, but not this one yet due to the lack of an Authenticator TOTP field at login. I look forward to that feature and testing more extensively.
Autofill overwrote the instance field with my user id when selecting a password sometimes.
The UI looks freaking awesome 👍😎. Thanks for creating this!
Managed to export my old settings from the Reddit app, and importing it just works flawlessly! Thank you so much Rubén! You definitely more than earned a launched rocket from me :)
Immediate feedback is that it does not allow login with 2FA (TOTP) yet => "missing totp token".
Edit: Ads removed! Great work!
Edit2: Found another comment and the info that this will be fixed with the next beta... also just set my custom theme to my old boost for reddit colors and it just so nice to have exactly the same user experience with the new lemmy app again. Thank you so much @[email protected]
It's mostly small things that I am so used to that makes Boost so great. Thank you for porting it to Mastodon Lemmy (Edit: got my ActivityPub apps confused :) )!
Edit: found how to fix this in "account preferences"
Mine hide in the short term when I "Mark as Read" (you can turn on the "Mark as Read" checkmark button in post settings). But the marked as read/hidden status isn't holding over, if I navigate away from the page I was on. So every time I navigate to All, I'm seeing the same posts I just marked as read a couple minutes ago
I used ReVanced Manager to continue using Boost as my Reddit app of choice, so I'm obviously loving the look and feel of this app for Lemmy too. Looks and feels pretty much exactly the same. Great job by the developer!
Hi! When I try to add a second account (in fact this account that I am posting from now), I always get an "incorrect login" error. I have triple checked that the login information is correct -- also I can log into this account on other lemmy apps and on desktop. If it helps, the first account I have logged into using Boost is on a different instance than the second account.
Anyway, I want to also say thank you, Ruben! I loved Boost for Reddit and I am loving Boost for Lemmy!
I grabbed the testing version because I'm very excited for Boost to return! Unfortunately I found an issue right away. It appears that the app doesn't support 2FA for instances that use it. I got an error stating "missing totp token."
When I tap a comment in my replies, it takes me straight to replying to it. It'd be great if it took me to the comment in context under the post so I can upvote, downvote, reply etc rather than just reply.
I'm getting errors trying to upload images that I took with my phone camera, presumably because they're large. I'm able to upload them in Voyager, but it'd be awesome to be able to do it all from Boost.
A feature I really like from LiftOff is the ability to crop images before I upload them, could this be added?
Is this app going to be open source? Because I had a bad experience with another Lemmy app recently stuffed full of trackers that I really don't want to repeat.
Edit: never mind, I just saw in another thread that it's not, so it's not for me.
I can confirm that very long passwords do not work. I use a password manager with randomly generated 64-character passwords (or 32-character when 64 is not supported) and I cannot log in to either of the lemmy instances I use from within boost. Login works fine on their webui of course
It's good to be back! This might just be my having missed a setting, but my system navigation bar has a white background even with the OLED dark mode active here. Aside from that, flawless so far!
Wife is getting this error when navigating to the download page from the "You are a Tester" page. It loads a Google Play page with the download button, then gives this error. Opening the Play app doesn't give her the download button. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?
Thanks @[email protected] (testing how I can mention at users in Lemmy lol). Loved the app before, and this reincarnation is why I'm even in Lemmy right now in the first place. Already bought ad-free and also put some extra fuel in the rocket! 🚀
Edit: testing mention again, since I didn't see it become a link in my comment: @rmayayo
Not sure if it's Boost or YouTube Revanced at fault but got the following error when I tried to open a Lemmy link to a video: https://postimg.cc/q6sW77x0
Also, the sign-up journey is a bit confused. Clicking sign up takes me to joinlemmy, which then just lands me on a home page for whichever instance I click.
Might be more user friendly to prompt for a choice of instance and take them directly to that instance's sign up page. And maybe have a button for "not sure? Explore here" or something similar that would take you to joinlemmy
That was an known issue in the last Reddit build. Something related to YouTube API changes for the embedded player. Maybe it'll be fixed, but in the meantime, the dev said you just have to select "Always" to always be redirected to the YouTube full app.
Being taken to the instance that just selected makes pretty firm logical sense to me, personally. Is the sign up process/path uniform across all instances?
Is there an option for the comments where I can just long-press to select and copy text instead of needing to go into a copy menu and then using the select text option? That can be bit tedious, and I typically copy most longer comments and send them to my voice-aloud app for TTS. It's definitely the main feature I miss about the old RIF app - easy text selection and perfect Bluetooth keyboard/mouse support.
When scrolling through posts I noticed that occasionally the post summary would slightly scroll up cropping the first line in the summary.
After playing with it for a few minutes, I can reproduce the behavior by pressing on the summary, holding the press and dragging left or right, continuing to hold the press and dragging up or down.
It seems I tend to scroll with a slight diagonal motion instead of a pure up and down motion.
Screen shots showing the glitch:
The post in [email protected], the "hey guys..." line gets scrolled off screen with the "diagonal scroll motion"
Thank you! you have done an amazing job! 🌷
bought the app right away.
Not a bug but a question / request : will you implement a 'History' tab in the sidebar, like there was in boost for reddit?
I find it very useful having the ability to scroll through posts I've viewed but not saved.. especially after nights my mind wasn't so clear..
Thanks again rmayayo! 🌷
It looks like the "c" community links aren't working. Like this: .
The Trending Communities posts are full of these if you need more examples ().
Edit: weird, my comment links aren't working. They're showing as normal text for me, but when you go to copy, select text, you can see that they're hyperlinks.
Loving it so far! I'm glad Boost is back! I have one problem, though! I'd love to pay to remove the ads but when I press Remove Ads I get a screen with a blue background and "Remove Ads" right in the middle of the screen but there doesn't seem to be a way to actually pay to have the ads removed!
Other than that, it works really well. Feels very responsive, too!
Loving the app! I'm having trouble swiping away media. It doesn't feel sensitive enough and usually takes me several swipes. I've enabled the tap to close which works amazingly but muscle memory wants to swipe.
Recommendation/Hope: it would be amazing to have a media peek where I can tap and hold on a thumbnail and it enlarges the picture. Awesome app, thanks!
Idiot. Devs have to eat too. He has clearly been working on this for months. He deserves pay like all jobs. I'll gladly pay like I did for boost for reddit.
By your logic, all those open source companies (e.g. linux-based like canonical, redhat etc) shouldn't even exist. I wonder how they are even going to survive if they can't get somekind of monetary returns.
