Uh, well. Depends on the people you're with. I am a Southern interpreter (or Minnesotan/Canadian interpreter if im south of Missouri)
"Bless your heart" to most Minnesotans is confusing. It's light hearted enough to not be a strong emotional expression of sympathy, but it's far too strong in terms of the condescending effect it has.
A more appropriate way to express the same sentiment with the same effect would be: "Well, as far as things go, you have it pretty fair."
But a Minnesotan would say to a Minnesotan: "That's a bit different."
Depends on group dynamics but the one I have heard all my life is… “oh that’s interesting” the most passive aggressive response ever but still holds true!
As a former teacher, I can honestly say most gens I have dealt with legitimately believe this fact. It’s the ultimate face palm moment! It’s more prevalent in the MAGATS due to no/lack of education, critical thinking skills, and the worst believing everything they read on FB or FauxNews… It’s honestly embarrassing, I had to quit teaching because I couldn’t take it anymore!
But honestly, thankful to live in MN where I have a Governor who doesn’t give two shits about “What should be said vs what NEEDS to be said”. Plus Canada is RIGHT THERE…. Haha!
I seem to recall a US reporter covering the Olympics (?) in the UK a while back and interviewing a black athlete where they kept saying "African American" and the athlete was like "I'm British."
Thankfully my generation had Charlize Theron. It definitely made me google why white people came from Africa. As a Canadian I didn't learn a lot about the details of Africa... Or more, likely, I didn't understand them all
News should be factual. It's the opinion pieces being treated as articles that got us into this mess in the first place.
Read the AP wire about a story, then see how CNBC covers the story and compare it to Fox's coverage. You'll find that more often than not you have to look at both stories to get the full picture.
I just use an RSS reader to get most my news. The only long form stuff I read now are exceedingly specific substacks (soon to switch to Ghost) and anything Pro Publica put out.
100% agree with you! News should be factual otherwise you end up in some fictional based conspiracy theory situations, like ‘Pizzagate” and “Alien Reptilians” …. etc…
But that RSS reader is probably clutch in our internet world now! It’s ridiculous what “news” people believe due to being gaslit for years!!
What the heck, do you want some ‘Esquire UK’ news rag? Telling you what’s up? Or what? Because those stories are NOT fact but rather speculation/flat out false. But I do love me some fiction on people, it’s honestly hilarious, not going to lie!
Clearly, you think news with ‘facts’, in your opinion, “isn’t news” … um WHAT? I legit am confused.
I mean, I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I sure as hell hope journalists and news outlets are putting out factual information… but instead we have people who believe stories on Facebot, Newsmaximal Wrong, Faux News, TikNot, and X marked dead … true journalism died during Drumpf’s first election from hell, so facts always please!
If you do not think this is “news”, ‘governor calling out a douche who paid his way up Drumpf’s illegal immigrant ass (as well) to basically gut out government for his own gain, who has never done ANYTHING but buy already established companies and ultimately try to gain from it (Starlink, Tesla, SpaceX)’.
While I understand what people are going for with this sort of framing and name calling it is hollow political rhetoric that doesn't move the line. The uncomfortable reality is that Musk, Sacks and Thiel came to America and prospered there because it is a place where their views are widely shared. As with Putin's foreign interference, the truth is the American billionaires controlling their media and much of the rest of the worlds are just as bad if not worse. It was just easier to point the finger at foreign interference than acknowledge the much more terrifying reality.
Murdoch is a filthy Australian immigrant. Are all Australian's bad? Tariff those fuckers. Are all immigrants bad? South Africa and Australia are Commonwealth countries. Does that make Canada bad as well? Hey, isn't Musk also one of those nasty Canadians via his mother? Trump must be right about them. Whose side is Walz on with this?
You're overthinking it. Can't do that when it comes to conservatives. Waltz knows this, and he's done it his entire career.
Thinking requires effort. Musk profited because he was already wealthy. He was already wealthy because his parents prospered in apartheid South Africa. Thus, him being a baby of nepotism.
Sanders doesn't talk down to conservative voters. He cuts through the bullshit. The truth is the economic disparity between blue and red states would be ample grounds for insurrection if US citizens didn't have the class consciousness beaten out of them. The fact that the MAGA cult captured those states doesn't negate the reality of a divided country.
As much as Waltz might be a good moderate administrator of a nice mid-west state and a nice bloke I don't think he has what it takes to unite a country. Politicians like Walz are funded by nepo babies and immigrants as much as any other politician. They aren't all like Elon Musk. Talk about the real problems perhaps. This war isn't going to be won by focus groups and sound bites.
If I wanted easy upvotes I would write 4 words everyone wanted to hear instead of waste time trying to write a thoughtful response.
