Trying to have a conversation about education in the U.S. over here and would greatly appreciate some participation from you all
  • Just wait till the vouchers get trotted out and all the special tax exemptions for homeschooling. I fear for gen alpha and the kids coming after.

Thank you for working in Special Ed. I hope you're able to weather what's happening and what may come. My life was changed by an alternative learning classroom. You are making the world a much better place. Thank you.

  • Well ya know, that can be the case. Close family or social gathering? Yeah, it's a tiered process inching towards the door and taking 20 minutes to put on a jacket standing in the entryway/mudroom.

Your co-workers dinner party and it's round 8pm and nobody's brought out the pie and coffee? "Whelp. I'll be seeing ya"

  • They become paramedics to help. But they are facing violence, threats, sex assaults
  • Has it gotten worse since the early aughts? I was in when Fent had just hit the streets by us. First responders thought they could get it by just touching an OD'd patient. It was rough.

    Edit: oh Vancouver. That's different

  • Not for nothing but you think there's going to be a Dept of Education next year?

The Fed Gov is not stable enough to rely on for any kind of National guidance.

I think it has to be grass roots and instead of a PTA bake sale it's a PTA sit in at their representatives offices till funding is drummed up and secured. Isn't this what all those lotteries were for?

However that's not really possible in the states where it's needed most as the parents are often working 2 jobs and do not have the time, nor the ability to have an arrest on their record that might jeapordise future employment.

So the young people need to protest. But now that's difficult because they never had any civics courses, and their critical thinking is piss poor because, ya know, no schooling.

The system is working as intended. No one is coming to save you. Go to your local government meetings and raise hell. Everyone else is.

  • A big part of learning Linux is screwing up computers and starting over.
  • I'm lucky to have only had one system nuked by a faulty power supply that shut down during a kernel update.

I usually just reinstalled back then. But I didn't get into it till the late nineties. Back when Ian was still on the list serves.

Unless you mean nuking the OS or borking the bootloader. Then yeah, countless.

  • News should be factual. It's the opinion pieces being treated as articles that got us into this mess in the first place.

Read the AP wire about a story, then see how CNBC covers the story and compare it to Fox's coverage. You'll find that more often than not you have to look at both stories to get the full picture.

I just use an RSS reader to get most my news. The only long form stuff I read now are exceedingly specific substacks (soon to switch to Ghost) and anything Pro Publica put out.

  • A slightly too long "Hmmmmm, so it is then" is also acceptable.

Still my favorite MN colloquialism is Slaps hands down on thighs and stands up "Whelp Ok then." And then without pretense or hubub, leaving the place immediately.

Almost as good as the Irish goodbye which is a massive favorite if mine.

  • I want to make it dead-easy for others to chat with me. I want a browser-based, FLOSS, E2EE chat solution that doesn't require the other party to log in. Does that exist?
  • I think that's by design and the nature of the setup. Anyone with the URL can communicate.

If your other comms method is compromised this doesn't have much use. Which is a different problem all together. I think this would work great as something like a deadrop so two completely faceless people can communicate. I like it a lot.

  • I don't know yet. It's more a thought experiment than anything else.

Looks like the URL is part of the seed and salt which is cool.

Proving who you are is done in another stream. Like MFA.

You do a one time pad, generate the URL with that. Communicate what's needed, then the URL dies.

    I'm still noodling with it.

  • Plex is locking remote streaming behind a subscription in April
  • Just because I and my family benefit now, doesn't mean it'll stay that way. Also again, I don't want to support or platform an app that charges others, who are not me, to share their own collection.

If they want to charge for the Plex TV or Plex Movies they host, and leave the app free of cost for a person's own personal collection to be shared. That's fine.

I have no confidence that'll happen though.
