For mods: I hope it's okay, if not feel free to remove it, but as a lot of people were commenting on the other thread while the reason of the change had been given in the top comment, I thought it was worth it to make a dedicated post.

As a non-techie, where/how can I find out if software is safe?

I'm a fan of FOSS and reasonable privacy with data. I also often look for and install software on my computers for random tasks as they come up. Today, when I was looking to install an extension to Firefox called Wikipedia-EN that helps me search Wikipedia by highlighting a word, the Mozilla page for the extension states:

> This add-on is not actively monitored for security by Mozilla. Make sure you trust it before installing.

As someone that is not educated in programming or perpetually current on tech news, what can I do to assess the safety of this and other software? Is there a site that transparently evaluates software and publishes its findings?

Is linux actually gaming ready or is it just not for me?

Ill keep it as short as possible, apologies if i keep rambling(ill put my specs at the bottom)

Over the last yew years, i have used quite a lot of distros, from mint (currently my main again), to manjaro to solus to endeavouros and more i cant remember, one thing they all (minus solus) had in commong (for me) was the fact that pc gaming...was horrible on them.

Many hours where spend getting different games to work, or rather trying to get them to work at all, most of them had failed, steam, lutris, default wine, no matter what has been used)

As an example:

Anno 1404 history edition (best anno, fite me), i bought it on steam, tried launching it, didnt work, tried several proton versions, didnt work, lutris, didnt work, i downloaded a crack to see, didnt work either, using a different file format, nothing.

Sometimes i was able to make it work, once and than never again, solus was the only one where anno 1404 worked out of the box, i managed to make it work in endeavouros once by installing two packages i could never find again. (most recently, i bought space marine 2, didnt work and keeps crashing no matter what i do9

But this was the best case scenario, games really work.

Is it just my hardware?

Am i using linux just wrongly for years?

Is it my fault?

Am i missing something?

Can i safely turn the power on on this open outlet? if not, how do i solve this? (solved)

The reason this outlet is open was because my washing machine was connected directly to it. I was advised to close it up by the people who took my old washing machine away. However i dont think i can wait until my friend has time to look at this. I likely cant turn the power on on the outlet at all right now i assume, how can i make sure myself that i can safely turn the power back on? electricity varies wildly in countries, im from austria if that helps.

Edit: a friend of mine who does some electrician work as part of his job (building pools) corroborated several of your comments (the only exposed cable is the grounding one and he offered to cover it up further at a later point after i put some tape on it)

thank you all for your answers and putting me at ease

Can't you log in to Jerboa using a Mastodon account and log in using a Mastodon app like Moshidon to log in to lemmy? How would that work?

@nostupidquestions Can't you log in to Jerboa using a Mastodon account and log in using a Mastodon app like Moshidon to log in to lemmy? How would that work?

The fedi community and app remains confusing to me. I don't know if they're separate federated communities or linked ones and if it's linked if they are seamless. I don't know how many levels of complexity I haven't even considered. Maybe you can only log in through Jerboa sometimes because I can't with my account.

Is the Video Download Helper companion app safe on Firefox?

There is an extension/add-on for Firefox called Video Download Helper that lets users download embedded videos from all sorts of websites. While it works as a simple Firefox add-on sometimes, for a remarkable portion of sites (e.g. on Vimeo) it says that it cannot do so as installed and states that the user has to install the companion app to their computer. Does anyone know if this is safe or is installing it placing myself in any risk? If you suggest against installing the companion app, do you have any other recommendations on how to download videos embedded videos from websites?

Edit: I'm on a Debian-derivative distro.

How are funds allocated in OSS projects?

Following up on another question about open source funding, how does it usually work when there is funding to pay for the dev's work, then someone new joins in and makes significant contributions? Does the original dev still keep everything? Do you split the funds between the devs? If so, how do you decide how much each person gets? Are there examples of projects where something like this has happened?

Has anyone else seen evidence of Robert Maxwell, Ghlisaine's father, as someone who "rescued" kids or even trafficked them?

Came across the above link (view in Desktop mode) claiming to be an article from 1990 saying that Robert Maxwell not only intervened with these children, they put them on his plane. I was trying to find more information and stumbled on this link after reading the below article which said that Maxwell "may also have helped Jews get out of Romania in the 1980s."

It struck me at the time, with how many similarities Robert Maxwell had to Epstein ...including a love of Ghilsaine, huge financial fraud concerns, and a death that many think could have been murder. And how many people who fight trafficking end up as human traffickers themselves because it allowed them access to victims. It's just so strange that THAT man would have access to these victim networks, and that it would be so difficult to find since he allegedly was doing a good thing, right? It's not even in his obituary in the Time from 1991. But that's some Nobel Peace prize stuff, right? So why is it so hard to find except in passing mentions in articles?

https://www.timesofisrael.com/did-father-robert-maxwells-early-abuse-taint-ghislaine-long-before-she-met-epstein/

It would be interesting if he really was human trafficking those kids, and it would mean that Ghilsaine wasn't likely recruited by Epstein after her father died, but rather she recruited him to continue her work.

https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/crime/ghislaine-maxwell-robert-jeffrey-epstein-b2472888.html

> Maxwell told the 2016 deposition that after Epstein was jailed she continued to occasionally work at his properties and kept her ties with him.

> “I’m a very loyal person and Jeffrey was very good to me when my father passed away,” she said in the 2016 deposition.

> “I felt that it was a very thoughtful, nice thing for me to do to help in a very limited fashion.”

Maybe she was loyal to him because he was her employee.

> [Giuffre] claimed that Maxwell had directed her on three occasions to have sex with Prince Andrew.

https://www.grunge.com/656382/this-is-how-ghislaine-mawell-and-jeffrey-epstein-really-met/

https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisettevoytko/2020/09/30/ghislaine-maxwell-reportedly-met-jeffrey-epstein-through-her-disgraced-father/?sh=17e34bc370f4

> According to Forbes, Maxwell and Epstein met through her father, convicted fraudster and tabloid king, Robert Maxwell. The pair was introduced as early as 1988, with Robert Maxwell reportedly providing funds for Epstein.

> The claim that Robert Maxwell introduced his beloved daughter to Epstein comes from a convicted Ponzi schemer who had dealings with the men, according to Distractify. Other sources have Ghislaine Maxwell meeting Epstein through mutual friends around 1991, the year when Robert Maxwell died after suffering a heart attack and drowning.

Finding out how those two met is likewise quite difficult, which is crazy since both of them went through several trials detailing their crimes. The Forbes article even notes that its likely they knew each other before Robert's death because of a photo of them together around 19 days after he died.

What's Mull browser about?

Saw that there's a Firefox browser named Mull for Android in this thread. I went to check it out in the Play Store, but saw it's not there. Apparently, it's one of those that have to be side loaded. I use stock Android and Firefox, btw.

  • What's Mull about?
  • Why would someone use it over Firefox?
  • What are it's benefits and disadvantages?

Is investing in real estate immoral if you use it to buy your first home?

I'm someone who believes landlording (and investing in property outside of just the one you live in) is immoral, because it makes it harder for other people to afford a home, and takes what should be a human right, and turns it into an investment.

At the same time, It's highly unlikely that I'll ever be able to own a home without investing my money.

And just investing in stocks means I won't have a diversified portfolio that could resist a financial crash as much as real estate can.

If I were to invest fractionally in real estate, say, through REITs, would it not be as immoral as landlording if I were to later sell all my shares of the REIT in order to buy my own home?

I personally think investing in general is usually immoral to some degree, since it relies on the exploitation of other's labour, but at the same time, it feels more like I'm buying back my own lost labour value, rather than solely exploiting others.

I'm curious how any of you might see this as it applies to real estate, so feel free to discuss :)

Is 3hk esim ok to use?

Edit: I ended up ordering one from Sparks. I’m going to review it here. Here’s the original question.

Original Question

I’m going to travel to Indonesia in 2 days and finding the appropriate sim card to use. I browsed the Internet and found buying 3hk SIM from mobimatter is the cheapest option. Is the SIM safe to use? Anyone else ever got a SIM from mobimatter?

My eSIM specs

Manufacturer: Sparks

Country: Indonesia

Capacity: 12GB

Available for: 30days

For how to activate the eSIM, please refer to the official documentation. Beware that you need to activate data roaming for Internet connection (it won’t cost you additional fees so don’t worry).

Review

My eSIM was connected to TSEL network and it showed LTE on the right top of my phone.

Result of speed test on internetspeed.my

Download (avg): 1.18 Mbps

Download (max): 2.45 Mbps

Upload (avg): 3.09 Mbps

Upload (max): 7.98 Mbps

Not fast, but not very slow.

It worked fine everywhere on Surabaya city. I’ve been in here for 2 weeks and I’ve already consumed 6.45GB (which is 0.43GB/day). Fortunately, I’m going to go back to my country in 4 days so it’s enough for me, and unless you watch videos outside, 12GB should be fine for everyone.

Tips

You can put mobimatter’s widget on your home screen to check the remaining data capacity.

Some Wifi in Indonesia restricts access to duckduckgo.com, so it’s recommended to use VPNs from trustable providers.

Question about south Korea customs declaration

Hey everyone,

I'm taking my first international vacation next week. I am going to the Philippines, but I have a layover in South Korea. I just got an email from my airline and it says I might need to fill customs declaration. This is kind of confusing me, because the Website says you have to declare goods that exceed $800 US. But it doesn't specify if goods means everything you're bringing, or just 1 item exceeding $800. The most expensive things I'm bringing are my phone, steam deck and a tablet. Everything else is just clothes. But all that together would be over $800, (my phone was $799.99 brand new). So I'm just not sure if I need to fill out a declaration or not. I tried looking for the answer but was unsuccessful.

EDIT: thanks everyone for the responses. It is clear now that by "goods" they mean items intended for sale. I will not need to sign a declaration form. Thanks!

Thanks!

What knot(s) should I use to secure this?

The yellow arrow points to a leather cord tied similar to a poacher's knot to have an end loop.

The red arrow are ends of an elastic string which passes through a hole (one for each end) in the leather.

I need to tie the elastic string ends in such a way to secure both the leather cord, and on itself so that when the elastic is pulled, it will not stretch. Also it should be hard but not impossible to untie.

Also it should not be too bulky.

Are currency/monetary base economic systems coming to their logical end?
  • Those are very big questions. This Wikipedia Page is a good place to start.

The simple answer is, everything humanity does happens in cycles.
But you can think of it as roller-coaster passing through an infinite series of loops. We keep going forward in the long run. But but the repeating loops take us up and down, even upside down and backwards along the way. In every case, coming down each loop gives us the momentum to reach the next one.

  • Every show with a suicide now has a disclaimer with a suicide hotline at the beginning. Is there any evidence that these warnings make a positive difference?
  • Based on what I've heard about the US's 988, it may rather be negative.

Let's see what's out there with some example (Reddit)

  • Why would someone desire a pension instead of a 401k?
  • Notwithstanding the possible typo in the title, I think the question is why USA employers would prefer to offer a pension over a 401k, or vice-versa.

For reference, a pension is also known as a defined benefit plan, since an individual has paid into the plan for the minimum amount will be entitled to some known amount of benefit, usually in the form of a fixed stipend for the remainder of their life, and sometimes also health insurance coverage. USA's Social Security system is also sometimes called the public pension, because it does in-fact pay a stipend in old age and requires a certain amount of payments into the fund during one's working years.

Whereas a 401k is uncreatively named after the tax code section which authorized its existence, initially being a deferred compensation mechanism -- aka a way to spread one's income over more time, to reduce the personal taxes owed in a given year -- and then grew into the tax-advantaged defined contribution plan that it is today. That is, it is a vessel for saving money, encouraged by tax advantages and by employer contributions, if any.

The superficial view is that 401k plans overtook pensions because companies wouldn't have to contribute much (or anything at all), shifting retirement costs entirely onto workers. But this is ahistorical since initial 401k plans offered extremely generous employer contribution rates, some approaching 15% matching. Of course, the reasoning then was that the tax savings for the company would exceed that, and so it was a way to increase compensation for top talent. In the 80s and 90s was when the 401k was only just taking hold as a fringe benefit, so you had to have a fairly cushy job to have access to a 401k plan.

Another popular viewpoint is that workers prefer 401k plans because it's more easily inspectable than a massive pension fund, and history has shown how pension funds can be mismanaged into non-existence. This is somewhat true, if US States' teacher pension funds are any indication, although Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan would be the counterpoint. Also, the 401k plan participants at Enron would have something to complain about, as most of the workers funds were invested in the company itself, delivering a double whammy: no job, and no retirement fund.

So to answer the question directly, it is my opinion that the explosion of 401k plans and participants in such plans -- to the point that some US states are enacting automatic 401k plans for workers whose employers don't offer one -- is due to 1) momentum, since more and more employers keep offering them, 2) but more importantly, because brokers and exchanges love managing them.

This is the crux: only employers can legally operate a 401k plan for their employees to participate in. But unless the employer is already a stock trading platform, they are usually ill-equiped to set up an integrated platform that allows workers to choose from a menu of investments which meet the guidelines from the US DOL, plus all other manner of regulatory requirements. Instead, even the largest employers will partner with a financial services company who has expertise on offering a 401k plan, such as Vanguard, Fidelity, Merrill Edge, etc.

Naturally, they'll take a cut on every trade or somehow get compensated, but because of the volume of 401k investments -- most people auto-invest every paycheck -- even small percentages add up quickly. And so, just like the explosion of retail investment where ordinary people could try their hand at day-trading, it's no surprise that brokerages would want to extend their hand to the high volume business of operating 401k plans.

Whereas, how would they make money off a pension fund? Pension funds are multi-billion dollar funds, so they can afford their own brokers to directly buy a whole company in one-shot, with no repeat business.

  • Seriously, what the f*** is keeping Donald Trump in this presidential race?
  • It's propaganda. But, it's not just propaganda, it's effective propaganda.

The fact that it's so effective is somewhat new and very concerning. We have to understand why it's effective if there's any hope of eventually stopping it. And, it's effective not just because the propaganda is well crafted, it's effective because there's a whole system that immerses the audience in it and never lets them see an alternative point of view.

In North Korea the only information you get is information specifically selected by the state. The US free market and first amendment was supposed to be a shield against that sort of propaganda. Unfortunately, while people have the right to find other forms of media, a lot of people want the comfort of living inside their own media bubble. Then the propaganda channel tells them that every other source of media is full of lies, and controlled by the jews, and who knows what else, and those people get even more locked in to their propaganda source. Then they're told that scientists are getting rich (ha!) by selling out, so you can't trust scientific papers. So, you can't trust the government, the media, scientists, doctors, schools... you can only trust them.

Then they're told that if they ever do try to do their own research, they're not going to get results because of censorship. Some censorship exists. Sometimes it's formal, sometimes it's informal, like YouTube taking down videos that hurt their bottom line, or cause them headaches. But, the convenient thing about claiming that information is being censored is that it's unprovable or "unfalsifiable". You can't prove that something that doesn't exist was censored because you can't prove it ever existed in the first place. And, of course, when an idiot is told that information on "turbo cancer" is being censored, they search for it and get no results, that just reinforces their belief that the news is being censored.

Add to that that the same group that wants to lock people into a pipeline of disinformation also wants to defund schools and universities. You can't hope that someone can learn the truth from a teacher or a professor if the school no longer exists. You can't hope that the next generation learns critical thinking in high school if the high school is defunded and shut down.

Big tech companies making their platforms extremely engaging is yet another element in this shitty soup. Most of these companies actually employ mostly liberal people, and the culture is at least somewhat left of center. But, they get their money by keeping people engaged, which means feeding them things that are shocking, angering, etc. That keeps people in their bubbles, and keeps them from engaging their critical thinking abilities.

The end result is you get people living in bubbles, listening to, watching and reading news that makes them feel good because it reinforces their existing biases. They cut off people in their lives who have dissenting views because either they're angry about that person's views, or it's just too much of a headache to constantly fight with them. Social media keeps them in a bubble that keeps them engaged, and keeps them seeing the same point of view over and over. And so-on.

Because the whole situation is so complicated, it's not going to be easy to reverse. It's not just a matter of shutting down Fox News, or Newsmax or MSNBC or any other propaganda fountain. It's also going to have to involve breaking up tech monopolies, or at least removing their Section 230 protection for their editorial decisions. It's also going to require major educational system reforms, ensuring that all kids go to schools that teach critical thinking skills, and because this is the US that will involve major fights over property taxes and religious freedom. I honestly don't know if it's going to be possible.

  • Seriously, what the f*** is keeping Donald Trump in this presidential race?
  • "Conservatism [...] can't be defeated with logic and reasoning"

This is the key point that a lot of people miss.

If you wholeheartedly, or at least performatively, believe that there is a "natural" hierarchy where some people are better than others, then what one might see as equality is seen as oppression by hardline conservatives.

This is why emotion is the key component of Trumpian messaging, regardless of veracity.

The key is to never play the game. Always proactivity act with questions, never "defend" and react with truth; they're not interested in the truth.

  • Seriously, what the f*** is keeping Donald Trump in this presidential race?

It also doesn't change the fact that the party who might actually make their lives better is NOT the one they are voting for.

  • Is linux actually gaming ready or is it just not for me?
  • Arch linux user here. Gaming totally works. Sometimes even better than Windows when playing native games. Even Proton works good most of the time. Sometimes I play Brawlhalla with Proton Experimental and it runs better and less laggy in Linux than Windows despite Windows having a native build. Check ProtonDB to find out how well games work on Linux. Linux gamers review games there.

Thanks to Valve, the Steam Deck is getting Linux popular and basically makes devs build their games for Linux as well.

  • How do you set up wake up alarm and not miss it ?
  • I personally use Sleep as Android which comes with a bunch of options to help ensure you've actually woken up. I utilize the "captcha" option in which when I go to turn off the alarm, it displays a screen full of sheep and all of them but one are sleeping - you have to click the one that is "awake" in order to dismiss the alarm. I guess the process wakes up my brain just enough so that I don't go back to sleep, whereas with a regular alarm that has just a simple dismiss button I'll absolutely either hit dismiss or one of the volume buttons to turn off the alarm before I've fully woken up.

I also have it set to buzz on my watch for 90 seconds before playing a sound on my phone (which escalates in volume) - I've not had a problem waking up with this in the years that I've been using it.

There are other options too, such as answering math questions, scanning a QR code, pressing your phone to an NFC tag, heavily shaking the phone, one called "Say cheese!" that makes you smile as hard as you can and uses the camera to detect it, and one that you have to "laugh out loud".

  • Why limit immigration?
  • America is a nation of immigrants so I don't really understand this argument. Cultures don't really integrate that way, plus assimilation is a generational thing.

A 2018 study in the American Sociological Review found that within racial groups, most immigrants to the United States had fully assimilated within a span of 20 years. Immigrants arriving in the United States after 1994 assimilate more rapidly than immigrants who arrived in previous periods.

Measuring assimilation can be difficult due to "ethnic attrition", which refers to when descendants of migrants cease to self-identify with the nationality or ethnicity of their ancestors. This means that successful cases of assimilation will be underestimated. Research shows that ethnic attrition is sizable in Hispanic and Asian immigrant groups in the United States.

By taking ethnic attrition into account, the assimilation rate of Hispanics in the United States improves significantly. A 2016 paper challenges the view that cultural differences are necessarily an obstacle to long-run economic performance of migrants. It finds that "first generation migrants seem to be less likely to success the more culturally distant they are, but this effect vanishes as time spent in the US increases". A 2020 study found that recent immigrants to the United States assimilated at a similar pace as historical immigrants.
