It doesn't have anything to do about murdered women, digging up possible victims or even justice
It has everything to do with legitimizing hate and normalizing racist ideals ... these aren't ads to let people know what she doesn't want to do ... it's an advertising campaign announcing to every right and far-right leaning moron out there that their ideology is accepted and can be promoted. It's a hate filled campaign to all right wing followers that it's ok to delegitmize minorities and dismiss them because they don't matter.
It's a campaign for hate ... and everyone who allows it to just happen and continue is part of the problem.
Over the summer, Stefanson’s PC government faced a wave of protests in Winnipeg, later spreading across the country and even receiving international attention, over its refusal to search Winnipeg’s landfill for the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran — two Indigenous women believed to be victims of an alleged serial killer charged with their murders last year.
Winnipeg’s police chief previously stated that investigators believe their remains are at a local landfill where the body of another woman, believed murdered by the same alleged serial killer, was recovered last summer.
What a piece of shit. But indigenous people aren't people to conservatives, of course.
Like, I get the argument against the project. The chance of finding anything to help bring the killer to justice is roughly zero. The women will still be just as dead, and may not even be found. But still, peace-of-mind is not valueless... but how many millions will we pay for that?
But regardless of the arguments about this: Putting out ads on the subject is absolutely moronic.
As for those that aren't protesting:
The criminal lawyers in I know from Winnipeg believe that justice will be served and Skibicki will be convicted of the murders of these women, even without the bodies being found. So spending a quarter of the provincial justice budget on one case that is already likely to be won (or roughly 30 times the amount spent on an average homicide, or 6 times the amount the budgeted for "Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations" for the whole year), probably just isn't going to happen. I know that it's brutal to say, but it's just not going to happen.
But there is a huge difference between looking at the costs and understanding that it won't happen, and spending money advertising how proud you are that you're not going to do it.
Putting aside that I've seen plenty express the desire to volunteer, you literally have zero basis to assume what others may or may not choose to do. There have already been experts other than the one Stefanson hired who have looked at the facts and said that recovering the bodies is absolutely feasible and wouldn't cost what she claims.
