Learned about Lemmy from Reddit but never heard of kbin until recently. That said, I like the name Lemmy a lot more than the name kbin. kbin sounds like a hex editor for KDE, not a Reddit alternative. I love the open source community, but sometimes the names of projects leave much to be desired. Lemmy isn't the perfect name but it's more memorable than kbin.

Speaking about names. What the hell is a "magazine"?? It's like the kbin devs went out of their way to ensure they named everything to be as confusing to outsiders as possible.
Kind of like how Lemmy made up communities? Lol you don’t call microblogs “toots” either. Seems every fediverse software has their own terminology.
Also it’s dev, singular. Kbin has been put together by only one dev. I personally find that damn impressive considering it’s functionally on par with Lemmy being only 2 months old to Lemmy’s 4 years.
Holy shit it all makes sense now! I’ve been seeing posts and comments randomly talking about magazines for ages now with absolutely no idea what any of them are going on about. Didn’t realise it was a Kbin thing. That’s one of the downsides of Federation I suppose, sometimes shit just gets weird.

Really? Kbin as the name is what intrigued me initially over Lemmy. It’s actually inspired by Linux, the sbin directory to be specific.
Honestly, I just like the UI better.
At the end of the day that’s a large reason to choose any of the federated platforms because as it matures we will seamlessly be able to communicate with each other. Be it Mastadon, Kbin, Lemmy, Pixelfed etc.
That’s what I love about federation. It won’t matter what platform we are on, we just choose the one that looks the best for us and can talk to EVERYBODY. It wouldn’t surprise me if down the road there is a better universal alternative that shows Mastodon, Lemmy/Kbin, Pixelfed content in their original format all in one instance (could be like tabs or all in one feed). I would personally use that but if anyone just wants to see posts in a Lemmy-like format they have the power to choose.
The reason I'm on kbin right now is that it supports Mastodon etc in its Microblog sections -- if Lemmy did as well I'd probably move there.
I heard of mastodon but didn't care because I don't use Twitter or social media in general, really. Lemmy is content aggregation and forum which is more my speed.
Honestly, I don't really care about that feature. I don't care to do "social media," and Mastodon is a part of that (although I DO use Discord with my small D&D/Roll20 group). I do have a Mastodon account that's active but, due to the fact that my wife and I did a WHOLE LOT of IRC back during our college days, we just never got into Myspace/Facebook/et. al. Once we were together for good, there just was never a need and we didn't see the point. My wife is the same way; she's a physics teacher and VERY SMART, but she's just not that into technology (other than gaming). She makes me listen to her 80's hair metal stuff on her Google Nest Hub (I'm more of a Pink Floyd/Tame Impala kind of guy personally) but, other than that, we've just been on Reddit (and Bored Panda for her).
Having said that, I was VERY MUCH into Reddit. It was the closest to "social media" that I was willing to get. I was actually REALLY surprised at what the CEO did; I thought he was smarter than that. I was wrong on this account. I think he is his own worst enemy. They often talk about the "echo chamber" and I think that he's made it his home...

Yes….on a technical level. But the picture is bigger than that. Personally, I have a hunch that the choice of Rust is making Lemmy’s development slower. This seemed to be evidenced by the fact that Kbin has more functionality than Lemmy while having only been around for 2 months. Vs Lemmy’s 4 years. The Kbin dev has also been much more able to fix things on the fly during the surge in users. Whereas Lemmy will supposedly move off websocket use any day now.
Adoptability isn’t something to be discounted. The fact that there any more people out there familiar with PHP may give Kbin an edge over time. And let’s be honest, in real-world test PHP can very often be faster then - less-than-mature-Rust codebase.

Not for me. I know PHP and not Rust, so if I want to go somewhere that I have a chance of contributing to, that narrows it down.

I suppose there is something nice about a low barrier-to-entry codebase, but I'd be weary of getting inundated with low quality PRs and spend all my time on code reviews. Maybe that's unrealistic, but I haven't seen that nearly as often outside of Python and JS projects

I tried Kbin and its way harder for me somehow searching other federated instanced content on Kbin than on lemmy.
It feels like for Kbin you need to go first to lets say Lemmy.world and then check the list and copy the names of each then search it.
on any lemmy instance i can simply search the things and find stuff of other instances way easier.
also Lemmy is like WAY bigger of user base posts and comments.
Was that when kbin.social was still behind Cloudflare protection? Federation was broken during that period.

Lemmy Includes Subs / Magazines from Lemmy and Kbin and finds those While... Kbin seems not.

Lemmy is the first one I heard about, and that's where I made my account. Kbin is also a much newer project, so I'm less confident that it'll be around in the mid-to-long term future than lemmy.world, and I'd rather not have to make a new account.
Lemmy has been around much longer right? Personally I'm using both, though kbin only very recently. That's the coolest thing about the fediverse to me; not only can lemmy instances federate and kbin instances federate, but a kbin instance can federate with a lemmy instance

So far kbin seems a lot more stable but i know the Lemmy devs are working tirelessly to address the most critical bugs so I feel like it's too soon to say.
I liked both but ultimately joined Lemmy over kbin because it seems like there's more interest in building mobile apps for Lemmy. (Currently using Jerboa) Also like that my Lemmy instance is based on renewable energy which is nice.
I started with both at the same time and I spent far more time here. I don't know, if kbin still has the problem, but every single time I opened kbin, I had to do the whole cloudflare-process of waiting, check a box, wait again and then get redirected. Apart from that I prefer the layout here and since here are more users, there is always new content and it feels lively.

I had some difficulty signing up for kbin and I also just had a preference for the layout of Lemmy. Plus I found iOS apps for Lemmy first (TestFlight, sure, but functional).
At this point because it’s all federated it’s more just Home Screen preference anyway, right?

There are userscripts to fix those. Google “Kbin userscripts”. They use tampermonkey
I use both, I like kbin feed much more, lemmy takes a long time to update the feed (although a fix might be very close) other than that, I like the access to microblog platforms.
I like kbin graphic interface more but lemmy feels more intuitive to use, so I use lemmy much more and use kbin for things lemmy doesn’t do, like following mastodon accounts.

- At the moment, Lemmy is more stable & have workable Android Apps.
- People who can use software regardless of the creator's political belief/worldview tend to be more open-minded and rational than purist who choose software only built by those who has same worldview with them even when it was inferior or lacking many features than alternatives.
- People on Lemmy is diverse in their ideological/worldview, It makes conversation more interesting and less prone to be an echo chamber for one ideological believe.

Yep but they say it's going to be fixed so that's a temporary problem luckily.
I'm in both, but I'm a Reddit refugee looking for a similar experience. 99% of my Reddit's time was through the RIF app and Jeroba looks and feels the same, so currently I only use lemmy.
I wouldn't mind switching over to kbin if it gets better in the future since I can read everything from anywhere.

I came to kbin first when reddit shut down the /r/kbinmigration sub. Streisand effect.
Later I learned it was an anti spam feature and not intentional, but the damage was done.

People started talking about the reddit API change and named lemmy as an alternative. So that's the one I checked out. Didn't here of kbin til I was already here.
I have accounts on 3 Lemmy instances and this one on kbin, right now I use kbin a bit more cause it‘s smoother for me, but if Lemmy apps mature faster I might use those more.
I never really got that attached to any of my Reddit accounts either, so that feels natural to me.
I don't understand why the content looks way different on Lemmy world. I keep getting nsfw stuff in all on Lemmy. If I use mlem it doesn't even bother to blur it. If I use the web page I get that loading as you're reading bug that makes the site unusable. Kbin is just a much better experience at the moment.
I prefer not to mix Mastodon/Twitter with link aggregation (Lemmy/Reddit).
I found a specific Lemmy instance that I wanted to join. For what I use it for the format suits me better but if not for this instance I probably would've been on kbin just cuz it seems easier to interact with mastodon through it
Personally I heard about Lemmy before kbin so that's why for me.
It's far more likely lemmy will be receiving 3rd party apps in the near future, meanwhile kbin's API is still nonexistent as the developer has far more pressing work to focus on to get the service running nice and smoothly.
Not that's really a "downside" to kbin or anything like that, since the mobile web UI is fantastic already and made even better by some great user styles & scripts; I'm currently using it via Firefox mobile and thanks to kbin's PWA support it works great with the container "Install" feature in the browser (has it's own icon, no browser title bar, but still affected by add-ons).But tbh, until the federation issues with all these different instances being overloaded gets sorted out, I'll be using both kbin and lemmy.
Personally using Lemmy as I find the interface, syntax (linking users and communities), and deployment easy to use.
Also I personally want to contribute to Lemmy and learning Rust is a high priority in my personal and work life.
Kbin is nice but I have a mastodon page if I want to engage with any microblogging stuff, no real need to get that out of my link aggregator/forum experience as well.
I gotta say, Kbin has such a nicer UI. Lemmy has to step up a notch.

i don't believe kbin has an app as yet, and lemmy.world seemed like the busiest community when i joined. i remember i got burned specifically with maplestory m which i invested a lot of time and a little money in but it was absolutely dead a couple of weeks after launch.

I feel like Lemmy has more content, probably because it's been around longer, so it's a good base to build from.
I'm also giving an answer to the other thread on Kbin, since I think there are good reasons to use that one as well. They're both solid, and I'm using both regularly--often viewing posts from one service on the other. For me, it's "yes AND," not "no BUT."

Lemmy federates with Kbin, so yeah, it can access the same content for sure. I just mean that, given the length of time Lemmy has been around, there was an existing community of regulars who were already posting heavily on Lemmy servers by the time Kbin started taking off. But yeah, thanks to federation, it doesn't really matter where the content is originally shared as long as Lemmy and Kbin can both access it.
It should be pretty similar, with the notable exception of defederation. Eg, beehaw users will see a lot less content because they blocked a very large number of instances, including some of the biggest ones.
I think that bigger instances will also see more on /all, which I think is a massive flaw and usability issue. I've been experimenting today and it seems that you need someone on your instance subbed to a community for it to... Well, basically be usable to any degree whatsoever. Both kbin and Lemmy have absolutely horrible UX for communities on other instances that nobody on your instance have subbed to yet. I can't stress enough how truly terrible the UX is. The community won't show up in /all until subbed to, yet figuring out how to sub to it is hilariously difficult (seriously, go try it).
So basically, you want the biggest instance you can find. Small instances should be avoided until this is improved (unless you don't care about /all or ease of subscribing to new communities, I guess).

In all seriousness, kbin is developed by Ernest who is an extremely devoted and trustworthy dev. Lemmy is developed by CCP shills. That's the reason I chose kbin.
kbin is also getting steadily updated and I have a very good feeling about its stability and featureset in a few months taking a look at the GitHub.
I first was on Lemmy, now on kbin. Kbin is just a much more nicer experience. Also it's not developed by tankies who glorify f*cking Mao Zedong. Simple as that.
The Lemmy devs claim the tankie thing was a claim by one Mastodon user with no proof. I keep people say they are, but haven't seen anything yet to back it up. Including several comments where people have asked for proof. Is there any?

The tankie thing keeps pushing me away from lemmy, but lemmy seems to be the only software getting clients at the moment. So I'm torn. I want an iOS client badly, but I don't want to support tankies.
I suppose I shouldn't sell out for a nice app though.

I use like hundreds of open source things and idk the ideology of any of the devs and I don‘t care, they could turn out to be serial killers, I don‘t see my use of their product as an issue. Monetary support is the difference to me.
