I don't need to feel like I've 'earned' basic resources, everyone should get those regardless of what they do so they're free to spend their life however they wish.
What are basic resources though? All people ever want is more. More than they had yesterday. More than the guy next door. More than Timmy whose parents took him to Disneyland in 3rd grade.
It isn't really that hard to see a natural place for "basic" to be defined. The points where peoples lives go off a cliff for lack of something simple are clearly visible: becoming homeless and losing shelter from the elements/violent people, being denied access to life saving medical care, not getting enough calories/nutrients of food to live.
Basic resources are the fence at the edge of that slope which leads to death. That not everyone gets them no matter what is a failure of humanity.
Basic resources I.e. food, shelter, and the most basic public services such as libraries, firefighting, policing, comprehensive healthcare, and internet.
Only people that are mentally ill. Which wouldn't happen if we actually invested in the wellbeing of our community. I honestly see no point in being so rich if I have to inhabit such a shit environment. Sadly most rich assholes chose to isolate, rather than invest in their surrounding. It's a bit of a shit loop.
I like Swiss trans as an example. Because they're soo good, rich people use em, which means more investment (money and effort) goes in, which means more rich people use public transit. It's the same loop but in reverse.
On a side note I always find it funny seeing presidents on the news commute. In Europe, often enough they have like 2 people accompany them as they just fucking walk next to regular citizens, meanwhile in the US, Russia and China, anybody hopping the designated perimeter gets tackled.
I dont understand how he can possibly not find worthwhile things to do, he is the richest person on the planet. He can buy virtually anything, do anything, change anything. If he fixed just one of the deeply urgent issues the planet and its people are suffering from he would be a beloved global hero just like he wants, but no instead he is a fucking dipshit on twitter.
It wouldn't be like that if we could work on something that makes sense to us. But no, we have to desperately find whatever is valuable enough to some rich dickwad that has no clue and then kiss their ass doing shit poorly their way. My work would be a million times better if my suggestions weren't always shut down on the basis of "well, I'm above you, and I made this decision before you, so suck it", especially when it's a system only I have to interact with and is trivial to remake.
Feels like you're being intentionally facetious but yeah I pretty much agree with all that. I think the nuance is that most people don't want to work jobs but would likely occupy themselves with their passions if their basic needs were guaranteed.
Maybe I'm weird but I've never in my life had a passion for anything. Don't get me wrong, I've had things I'll be vaguely interested in. But I think certain personalities are more inclined to have passion and other personalities are more inclined to be a bit blasé through life. I've always been more of the latter and I know I am not the only one on the planet who is this way.
That doesn't mean that I'm in a bad spot in life and I'm not interested in changing careers. I have a good job that pays very well and that can be vaguely interesting. For a blasé individual, it's the best I could hope for lmao.
David Graeber says that half of all jobs are bullshit and completely unnecessary. I wish we could admit it and move on. Life would be so much more fulfilling if there were only half as much work to do.
Someone has to work. Someone has to produce. If you don’t want to work and yet reap the rewards off of the backs of others that have have wrought, then you’re no better than a leech. A parasite. A drag on society.
