We should shame people that promote BlueSky more
  • Jack Dorsey being one of the founders certainly has something to do with that, from a UX and UI point of view. Other than that, I don't think is accidental. Also could be some marketing in place and certain "influencers" - of all sorts - pushing the platform online

  • We should shame people that promote BlueSky more

Especially when they promote and use it out of "moral motivation" to "fight against twitter/big tech". You're still using a platform owned by one company. They're not really decentralized. There's nothing stopping them to go down the same path twitter did. They're funded by some questionable investors... Or, to quote something I recently read: "BlueSky is decentralized in the same way Total Energies is a green company."

Fight big tech, yes, but know which platforms to use. And to counter all "but Mastodon etc. are boring": the more people making the shift to the fediverse, the less boring it gets.

Edit to add: "shame" might be a heavy choice of words, but I don't know another term haha (English not a first language and all that)

who else on the shitter at work
  • I was an hour ago, but now I'm back at my desk scrolling through Lemmy and Mastodon while following cycling (Volta ao Algarve) on my laptop. Social media manager sure is one hell of a job. I think I'll get another coffee

  • Could an “Army of Europe” Actually Happen?
  • there's a certain orange guy overseas doing things that might make this "Army of Europe" a necessity. and why not? I'm pro EU. when we work together on all levels, we can be a strong force. and that includes military.

    l'union fait la force!

  • Is social media ever going to move past politics?
  • Politics and social media both have a major impact on your life. Imo it's impossible to disconnect (pun intended) them from each other. Social media is basically the 21st century version of the town square. People talk about politics, that's just how it is

  • Observing American politics feels really strange at the moment
  • Oh if you're into politics, it's very interesting to follow hahaha. It's definitely not ideal, but better than a two party system for sure. Also not that difficult of a system, but for outsiders it can be a lot I think. I also struggle to fully understand the American system, with the value per state etc. Forming a new government is fun and exciting, plus it gives you some hope that a terrible minister will lose his function four years later

  • Yeah, Germany has its elections on Sunday. I'm anxiously awaiting those results, tbf. You'd think Germans know how well it went the last time the extreme right-wingers were in control, but you never know...

In Belgium, we had elections for the federal government in June and regional (Flanders, for me) government in October. Although the right wing gained a lot of votes, we were able to form a government without the extreme right. At the moment we still have a "cordon sanitaire", look it up, I think it's quite nice. The extreme right-wing party says it's undemocratic, of course, but in this case I don't mind. The formation took 236 days, tho, but that's another story. We still hold the world record for longest period without a government (592 days in 2018-202, breaking our own record of 541 days in 2010-2011)

  • Observing American politics feels really strange at the moment
  • From what I read online and see in the news here, Canada seems to have a "ow yeah, bring it on, we'll kick your ass" mentality (might sound cooler than I intended but hey, maybe it really is like that!)

  • Observing American politics feels really strange at the moment

As an outsider (I live in Belgium) it feels very weird and dystopian to see everything happening in American politics with Trump and Musk.

On one side, it's very interesting and almost entertaining; on the other side, it's scary. I can't imagine what it must be like to live in the USA.

Americans, how do you cope? What's your take on the situation?

Tips for installing brakes on flared handlebar

As the title says! I have a fixie and after a period of riding brakeless, it's time to install a front brake again. Mainly because I use it for endurance/audax as well and I'm not doing that brakeless. I don't have a death wish yet... For balance, looks and grip, I'm installing a lever on either side (Tektro RL520, nothing too fancy shmancy). I have flared drop bars, and I'm figuring out how to properly mount these. Anybody has some tips? Thanks!
