Despite Microsoft's push, Windows 11 and Edge see decreases in user share
  • One of the issues indeed.

    Here's a few more:

    • stringent and unnecessary hardware requirements
    • changing app defaults is cumbersome
    • Home version requires a MS account
    • right click menu costs more clicks than in 10

And so on and so forth...

  • Despite Microsoft's push, Windows 11 and Edge see decreases in user share
  • The taskbar still cannot be pinned to the side? I stay with 10.

Still no properly customisable Start menu? I stay with 10.

Still refusing to let my older devices upgrade for no good reason? I stay with 10.

And a number of further reasons that make me refuse 11.

  • What's a scam that's so normalized that we don't even realize it's a scam anymore?
  • I agree that it's not great that telemetry is shared, but to say that you buy it "just" to share your data is an exaggeration. I am sure you do useful things with it.

That said, yes, it is bloated and I wish you could really turn off all telemetry. Am totally with you on that.

  • What's a scam that's so normalized that we don't even realize it's a scam anymore?
  • The way mobile providers charge. The likes of Vodafone, any random Telecom, T-Mobile and so forth. It's a huge scam, bordering theft sometimes. Want samples? Here we go:

"Your credit expires in x days. Better recharge now to not lose it!" (Banks should start doing this /s)

"Your credit has expired. Better give us more money within our generous deadline, or else we are forced to delete your number. We love you."

"Your data has expired. We now charge you a horrendous amount every minute, because we are too greedy to warn you in time. For technical reasons we also cannot stop you from using data after your allowance has been used. Fortunately you still have credit, huh?"

"Your data expires today. We don't insult your intelligence by telling you when. Surely you remember when you bought the package, right? It's not hard to count 24 hours. We also do not send any SMS anymore to save the environment."

"Your data has expired. You need data to buy a new bundle. Our app charges data for our convenience."

"Social media data only works for WhatsApp, but not for Signal. But who uses Signal anyways?"

"Use our customer friendly support chat. Conveniently it uses data. 'Hello, I am your smart bot speaking. How can I help you? I might understand you if you type one of the three questions I have been programmed to answer. Do you want to know more about our products?'"

Edit: added point 2, minor corrections for clarity

  • Geometric Weather: a light and powerful weather app (iOS/Mac and Android) that provides you with real-time temperature, air quality, 15-days weather forecast, etc
  • Why would I use this "Geometric Weather" on Android instead of a completely free weather app such as omWeather?

Doesn't show as much information (e.g. dew point, daily forecast details).

Doesn't support multiple weather providers, AFAIK.

Doesn't look as nice, if that matters.

Both apps don't track. I would venture a guess and say that Breezy Weather has the warning, because it includes AccuWeather, which can be turned off and changed to OpenMeteo or others.

  • StreetComplete: An app for those who want to contribute to OpenStreetMap

Help to improve the OpenStreetMap with StreetComplete!

This app finds incomplete and extendable data in your vicinity and displays it on a map as markers. Each of those is solvable by answering a simple question to complete the info on site.

The info you enter is then directly added to the OpenStreetMap in your name, without the need to use another editor.

  • The guy in the video explains what he means.

So I hope no one votes without really knowing what they are voting for.

Anyway, I thought the commentary made an interesting point. I do not agree with all of it, as it seems a bit extreme at times.

What I do agree with is that modern storytelling can be a bit... well, let's call it inexperienced with life. Whether that's intentional or not, I can't say. Discovery is a prime example. Burnham, for example, breaks rule after rule with little or no consequence. On the contrary, everyone still seems to follow her every suggestion. And when they don't, she goes ahead on her own and the cycle starts all over again. I was so happy to see her demoted a bit in season 4, only to see her become captain the next season.

By that logic, the most stubborn and self-centred people get the most respect. Surely there are parallels to be drawn with today's rich and famous. Art imitates life, yes, but Star Trek was made to show a higher standard.

Like another poster wrote, I hold modern series to the TNG standard (until something better comes along). That crew tended to behave like mature, well-trained officers. Most of the time (why would Riker sleep with that woman in First Contact???). The conversation between Data and Worf mentioned in the video is an excellent example of professional conflict resolution. No angry storming out, no fighting, no swearing, no hard feelings. I enjoy seeing professionals at work. A team bonded by trust and friendship is what I want to be a part of. A group where I never know whether they hold the same standard as me still tomorrow? Not so much.

  • I have just placed this here without voicing my opinion. Now I am wondering why there are downvotes. Does this mean you disagree with everything said in that commentary?

If you feel this shouldn't have been posted here, I agree with the downvote more or less. Even so, why not say as much?

Voicing a personal opinion is usually more valuable than the click of an arrow, especially on an opinion piece. Just saying ⬇️ "No" is saying very little.

That is only my opinion, of course. 🙂

  • Fan reaction to the reveal of the Enterprise-D

Had to post it, because I keep loving this video. This moment will go down in Star Trek history. Without teh sahdow of a doubt. 🖖

I wish there was a recording of the entire stream.

    Find Lemmy Resources Universally

In the past, we would type something like site:reddit.com into a search engine to get to the resource we needed. In the meantime, I have already found a few useful tips on Lemmy instances by using the Lemmy search. But since all Lemmy instances are named differently, a simple site:lemmy won't work well in a search engine.

Do you see a solution for this? Or do we leave this to the search providers to figure out?

What is your opinion on Solus?

With the latest release of Solus, I feel I should ask. I have had my eye on this particular distro for some time now. I even did a test installation about two years ago, but it didn't feel as complete as I needed it to be.

I am looking for a solid, beginner-friendly rolling Linux distribution for general use. Multimedia, gaming, coding etc. Do you recommend Solus? If so, why? Why not? Looking forward to your thoughts.
