/home dir on a separate partition? Why/Why not?
  • Yeah, I do this too! A lot more convenient for me as I have multiple computers needing the same files.

  • /home dir on a separate partition? Why/Why not?

    Hey folks!

I'm about to distro hop (again) to test Tumbleweed for a longer period of time 🦎 However, something i've not done before is to have my /home directory on a separate partition, should I? If I do it, should it be a different filesystem than the rest? (Been reading on OpenSuse TW forums and seen people mentioning that they use BTRFS for /home and XFS for the rest, or the other way around. Are there any benefits of using separate filesystems, or is this done to get the BTRFS backup for the /home dir?

What are the pros and cons of doing these changes to my system, lemmy know :)

    Selfhosted alternative to Spotify
  • Currently exploring some tools around this myself too. I'd recommend having a look at Gonic, LMS(light music server) and Navidrome for hosting music. Personally I quite liked the simplicity of Gonic.

If you need to re-sort/manage your music then, Beets and Musicbrainz Picard, or MediaMonkey (if you're on Windows) are your friends. These can add alot of additional metadata to your library.

Beets is apparently the "best" tool out of these as it has a big plugin library and hella customizable configuration for your exact setup.

    Best of luck 🀞

  • Is there a video-game .ics/calendar that I can subscribe to keep up with recent releases?
  • Appreciate the find, but doesn't seem to be very up to date. Hasn't included either Stalker 2 or Path of Exile 2, which both launch during November.

  • Is there a video-game .ics/calendar that I can subscribe to keep up with recent releases?

I am using Proton Calendar, hoping there is some service that allows me to subscribe to their service/.ics so that it integrates nicely into my calendar. If anyone have any idea of a such service then let me know :)

If you hoard video games and aren’t selfhosting GameVault yet, you’re missing out!
  • Love the idea of this project, exactly something I'm looking for. Though as others have stated, a more native way for Linux or an integration with Lutris or Heroic Launcher would truly be helpful for this project. Believe it would get a lot more traction in the selfhosting community if this became a reality.

  • Do you refrain from participating to a community if it's hosted on Lemmy.ml ?
  • While I have not blocked the instance (yet), I purposely try not to post anything on any community hosted there and rather look for alternatives. Sometimes it's easier to comment and or post on an ml instance due to it being larger in user size such as the [email protected] vs [email protected] - but in these cases I will crosspost too.

  • Game Video Clipping tool for Linux?

Hi, I am looking for video clipping tool that record the last 60 seconds or so from any game I play, but on Linux. Software such as MedalTV, Nvidia ShadowPlay(i have AMD card) etc.. is what I am on the lookout for. I know OBS is one option, probably the best(?), but are there any other suggestions?

Any tips or suggestions appreciated :)

  • While true, none of the other ones are as seamless and easy as what Proton achieves. I've tried multiple other services, and always come back to Proton for exactly this.

  • Spotify criticized for letting fake albums appear on real artist pages
  • Same here!! Been absolutely fantastic so far. Although I have to remake my playlists, totally worth it considering Spotify is only getting worse and worse each year. Discovered late last night that Navidrome supports smart playlists, so will play around a little with that.

Thought I'd make a Lemmy post about the whole transition when I'm completely done migrating 😊

  • Used to be the case for me too. But recently discovered that paid apps generally is much better polished, feature rich and ad+tracking free. That at least for me makes it more interesting paying for apps.

  • What's your favourite paid Android app?

Personally paid for Niagara launcher as I find that to be the far superior launcher to any other I've tried. My second one is Symfonium, the most feature rich and well developed audio player.

How bad does the USB-C to AUX dongle ruin audio quality?

Hi there, I'm thinking about getting my first pair of IEMs, as I've never had any before and would like to have a wired option that is easy to travel with. I'm specifically looking at the Moondrop Chu 2 as they seem quite affordable and a good starting point.

However my phone does not have AUX anymore (Pixel 7A) and I doubt I'll get a phone that has one in the future as I want to continue to use GrapheneOS.

Does anyone have any experience regarding the use of these dongles. Is there something I should be aware of before doing a purchase?

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: I see on the pictures(website link) that it's possible to purchase this with an adapter between the dongle and the IEMs. Is this one in specific strictly necessary or can I go with a smaller/cheaper one?

Edit 2: Further investigation, it seems like these can come in two variants: 3.5jack and USB-C.

What are some TV specific Linux distros? What are your experiences with them?

I'm considering replacing my Nvidia Shield in the future and plan to build a small TV box as its replacement. I'm curious about what operating systems people typically use for these types of TV-specific devices, as well as which desktop environments are preferred. Is KDE or GNOME better optimized for use on TVs?

Do you selfhost your own blog/website?

    Hey there!

I'm thinking about starting a blog about privacy guides, security, self-hosting, and other shenanigans, just for my own pleasure. I have my own server running Unraid and have been looking at self-hosting Ghost as the blog platform. However, I am wondering how "safe" it is to use one's own homelab for this. If you have any experience regarding this topic, I would gladly appreciate some tips.

I understand that it's relatively cheap to get a VPS, and that is always an option, but it is always more fun to self-host on one's own bare metal! :)

How do I redirect to a /path with Nginx Proxy Manager?

    Hi folks,

Just set up Nginx Proxy Manager + Pihole and a new domain with Porkbun. All is working and I have all my services service.mydomain.com, however some services such as pihole seem to be strictly reachable with /admin at the end. This means with my current setup it only directs me to pihole.mydomain.com which leads to a 403 Forbidden.

This is what I have tried, but with no prevail. Not really getting the hang of this so would really appriciate a pinpoint on this :)

Do you fill in real name + info when registering for a domain?

Hi! Thinking about registering a new domain for homelab setup. Not quite sure which registrar to go with but have heard good things about Porkbun here on lemmy. But, do people fill in their actual real name, and details for these sorta things? Geuninly curious, don't want to end up on bad terms with a company. But on the other hand im just going to use this for my homelab and dont see the "need" to give away my details for this sorta thing.

Let me know how you guys do it :)

Why are there no mainstream forks of OpenSuse?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still on the learning path of Linux. But there doesn't seem to many forks of OpenSuse? There are a bunch of forks of Arch, Fedora and Debian, but why not OpenSuse? Is it a license problem or something else?

Keyboard apps stop working correctly in Voyager comment section.

    Hi there.

I love this app to bits, but recently have stumbled upon a weird issue I cannot seem to resolve. Normally I use the Swift keyboard app from Microsoft but for whatever reason, only when writing a comment to someone, it doesn't work as expected. For instance I cannot use backspace to correct my writing and autocorrect gets disabled.

Ive tried to switch to googles keyboard app and the same thing happens there. This strictly only happens in comments as far as I've noticed, and not when writing this. Also only an issue here in Voyager app, nowhere else.

Has anyone stumbled upon this issue? Is it known?

Update; Created a bug-report on the matter for those interested. https://github.com/aeharding/voyager/issues/1602

Pi-Hole question / Blocked Queries being reset each day?

Hi there, I've just done the switch from NextDNS to PiHole. Simply because I want to test it out + self-host my DNS. I set up PiHole+Unbound two days ago, and yesterday the amount of "Queries blocked" was much higher that it is now. But this morning the number was down back to 100ish. Is this normal behaviour, is it supposed to reset the counter? I'd rather it didn't. Let me know if this is my fault or a setting I've managed to miss.

    Thank you.
