The Last Word. I drove out to the country to buy Chartreuse for me and my friends.
Who knew the ABC website let you just search avaibility! Do you guys think a better gin should be used than Bombay?
Anyways:
An ounce each of gin, chartreuse, Luxardo cherry liqueur, and lime juice. Garnished with a store bought cherry.
I'm not really a sour or citrus juice guy (can hurt my gums) but this drink is very good. Very refreshing. Fruity and herbal. Will be trying the Naked and Famous as well as a chartreuse Manhattan soon.
I would be curious if anyone has a recommendation too. It's been a long time since I've had Chartreuse and I don't remember exactly what it tastes like. I needed it for some warm holiday drinks but couldn't find it. I ended up getting Centerbe which tasted wonderful in what I made.
Chartreuse has such a lovely flavor. I like it in home fermented ginger beer. Have tried adding vodka, tequila, and gin (I don't remember which) to booze it up and each of them work. I DO like citrus so added a squeeze but sure it would work fine without. Personally think store bought soda would make it too sweet but if you like Negroni you like sweeter-stronger stuff than I do. Try your Bombay, the Chartreuse, ginger beer, 1-1-2.
Also (not kidding) try it with Coca Cola. Not quite like a highball, maybe 3/1 coke to Chartreuse. Interesting in a good way. It didn't work with diet coke, but nothing really does.
I guess I like the Chartreuse in fizzy things, because it also is good in a spritz.
This is one of my favorite cocktails, and I've made it with all sorts of variations. My favorite gin for this is Ransom Old Tom Gin. The original was better but the current version is still close enough.
If you're feeling experimental, I recommend subbing the gin for Rhum Agricole. It's got a grassy finish that (IMHO) works perfectly with the chartreuse.
