Can I create an instance? What is needed?
Hello, I want to self host an instance so I'm only beholden to myself and the military forces that watch all. I only have one rule, and don't care much for moat things, but I'd like to create safe and friendly place for people like me
I would advise against it.

- Lemmy's database can act in mysterious ways
- You don't sound like you know how computers work
- The above is necessary to have any reasonable uptime.

- you need to have 24/7 moderation capabilities to filter all the child porn that trolls will immediately try to spread onto your instance

6 0 Replythat's an exaggeration, i haven't had a moderation case like that on lemmy yet.

Ifyou selfhost only for yourself it's easy pickings though, and something I recommend as a start.

Yes, it's possible. It requires some knowledge in server administration though, you can find the specifics at the Lemmy GitHub page.

1 1 ReplyThanks! What's clone repo mean tho? I generally use vpn, I think that should be default systems globally if humans get shit together
1 3 ReplyIf this is your level of experience, I would heavily caution against running an instance.
9 0 ReplyIt's a feature of Git. Read up on git/GitHub before you try to tackle this.
