Ask Canada: What are your MAGA guys up to these days?
American here. I had a passing thought while reading tariff war news and wanted to inquire. I seem to remember some stories about how there's some percentage of Canadians that are as crazy pilled as our MAGAs, flying confederate flags and such, and I was wondering, what are they up to these days? How are they taking things post Trump election and present tariff fighting? Are they also booing the american anthem at hockey games? Or are they buying Kentucky whiskey in solidarity? I find the idea of those guys so fascinating, but I have so little news sources for them. Anyone have any insight into what the chatter is like in those communities lately?
We have them pretty much everywhere, but the greatest concentration are in Alberta and probably Saskatchewan. They are pretty emboldened atm as you would imagine. They did a convoy in our capital. But they relied on US maga funds to make it happen. So, as yours run the US economically into the ground, they'll be losing their backer.
Yup, they just parrot US talking points and don't actually have their own support and funding here. As soon as fascist party is gone down south they will dissolve as well. It's also the dumbest people you've ever had to interact with...
It's a Russian psy-op, Trump even confirmed with this russia, Russia, Russia and me and Putin had to go through the Russia hoax together comments.
Maple MAGA didn't go anywhere, but they got a very harsh slap in the face when most Canadians "woke up" to politics. They were doing that thing American Conservatives do where they pretend that everyone secretly agrees with them and they are the "silent majority".
That's easier to do when most Canadians don't vote, don't follow politics and are generally checked out, as it has been for years.
But then, basically overnight, Canadians across the country all engaged. Boycotts, firearms training, tracking the news on a daily basis. Funny what a little thing like threats to our sovereignty will do. And Maple MAGA didn't suddenly change their tune. They're still out there, loving Trump, consuming Russian propaganda and thinking Canada is a fascist regime because we have the gall to fund social programs. But they're a lot less loud when they realize they're the minority in every room. Essentially, they're cowards and traitors and both those groups tend to keep their head down when a nation gets a surge of patriotism.
There's a group of separatists in Alberta trying to get the province to join the US as the 51st state.
Our premier claims to disagree with them but has been pushing the separation dogwhistles for years, and is on her way to PragerU to speak alongside Ben Shapiro.
The one thing folks haven't mentioned so far is that it's put our conservatives into a real comical bind. A significant chunk of their base loves trump, while the rest are now vocally opposed.
I love the fact that it's so utterly clear exactly why he was so desperate for an election before Trump took office. I chuckle every day at the small man's petulant fury.
Polievre has nothing but wild promises to fix everything without plans and, "I'm not Justin Trudeau." He desperately wants to be Donald Trump. He would cut taxes on the wealthy and cut services for the rest of us. He would run up the deficit and the debt and blame Joe Biden Justin Trudeau.
One good thing that’s come out of all this is that people are hanging Canadian flags in solidarity, totally erasing the previous use they were put to. Those other people have essentially lost all the oxygen to shout from their soapboxes, and their Trudeau stickers are now meaningless.
It’s been good to see people discussing things that can actually make a positive difference.
I don't know any personally, or if I do I haven't asked them about it, but there was a guy on a CBC/npr call in show a few weeks back who thought becoming the 51st state would be great, because he can't currently get healthcare for his kids.
Surprisingly taxation isn't hugely different, at least for average income levels, according to the latest OECD report -- and we get publicly funded healthcare!
I suspect many of these wannabe Americans would be in for a nasty surprise when they learn that the US in fact does have reasonably comparable taxes... And limited healthcare coverage, and very poor maternal leave benefits, shorter average lifespan, lower minimum wage, the list goes on...
I for one, am proud to be Canadian! 🇨🇦

I know some Canadians who hate Trudeau etc. I saw them repost one Canadian guy who said that Trump just wanted Canada to be a good neighbor and if Canada can't get it together they deserve to be taken over and people can call him a traitor if they wish.
ITS THE FUCKING DEFINITION OF BEING A TRAITOR.
I think only war would actually make some of them realize America is being the bad guy here.
