90s low rise jeans, pockets or not with hip bones on display is what made me know I was straight. Exposed midriffs and back dimples were all the rave there for a good bit.
Edit: I think low rise denim skirts were big around that time as well, I have no complaints about late 90s fashion
The world was becoming more peaceful and more democratic. Fewer people went hungry. Many countries made the jump from poor to middle income. All in all, the world was a better place than it is today, but the most important thing was the optimism that things could actually get better. But then people in the US had enough of being reasonable and voted for Dubya.
The world is still becoming more peaceful and democratic, even if it is becoming less democratic in the US. Africa is much more peaceful and democratic than it has ever been. Asia is also far more peaceful and democratic than it was post WWII. Far fewer people are going hungry today than in the 90s. Just because the US is sliding into chaos doesn't mean it's the same everywhere.
Yeah, there was a lot of bad shit going on—well, just as much there is now—but we actually noticed because nothing much else was going on in western countries. Clinton getting a gobby was a massive deal, otherwise it was watching the Gulf War, Kosovo War, Rwanda genocide, etc.
These problems were solved or at least alleviated by global scale environmental action. The horrendously dirty heavy industry of the Eastern block collapsing did help, of course. There were no large scale disinformation campaigns trying to convince people that sulphur dioxide is good for you.
I know. Its a shame that we all believed in that problem and managed to overcome it (for the most part) and now (when you think we'd be more informed and/or intelligent) we're stuck at the getting people to believe in basic science stage.
I really hope this trend pulls through. Tbh, it's my main reasoning for keeping calm about the whole situation.
Hopefully in 20 years we can look back and say that the 2020's were a crazy time. And not that mechaTrump is living in his nuclear bunker after he caused the world to nuke itself over some mexican immigrants or some shit like that. Would be nice 😁
“Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.”
