I heard something about a rogue employee selling a studio to a wealthy scammer for a dollar (and a massive kickback). Does that describe disco elysium’s situation?
Without having ever heard about that game or the name of the writer here, honestly, that gofundme reads bad. A writer that can't stick to a factual description of his situation and uses his plea for a creative writing exercise to embellish his cause.
And even if I trust all of his story to be true, it leaves the picture of a person who made a lot of bad decisions and is now asking others to pay for them. And by that I do not mean that he wouldn't / shouldn't have the rights to that game, but the decisions leading up to that point.
If I go downtown right now, I'd find ten people within the hour who have never had a chance in life and are in a worse situation in terms of recovering from it by themselves than this person here.
You don't know this game nor what happened there. You were never the intended public to donate.
What happened is actual theft of intellectual property, not to be confused with copyright. The world of disco Elysium is a paracosm, a massive inner world developed intimately over a creators life.
For those that have one, such world become a part of them, intertwined with your own identity.
A loophole by a pig, enforced copyright where no moral right exists. It bans the creator of making stories or using elements of the universe that exists inside their own head.
Such loss is not dissimilar to losing a child and i say this as a parent. I cant blame him for borderline insane emotional talking.
It ended up on the front page of my lemmy instance, so I feel invited to read & comment. As I said, from what the plea describes, there's plenty of people who one could help a lot more with a lot less money and out of circumstances that they have less chances of getting themselves out of.
I am not saying I have zero sympathy for the guy, but if I think about charity, I think about the weakest of society first. And this guy still has his creativity and a safety net (family, friends) to continue working.
Maybe you should look into it before blinding commenting? And maybe read the disclaimer in the post??
You do realize you're in a community for the game that the writer is for right? So obviously people in this community are going to care about the writer.
And giving money to his cause does not have to take away from helping others, it's very possible to do both. Your complaining isn't helpful at all.
