I’d like more people on here that don’t use the words normies or NPCs, yes. I have interests besides news, tech, and politics that aren’t really strongly represented here yet.
I honestly just don't care what kind of people are on Lemmy as long as they're friendly. Those who are not friendly are just immediately blocked by me, so I don't see their comments (behavior).
To comment on your comment;
If someone asks a question about an issue with Windows, I don’t need to see nothing but Linux evangelism
I'm a Windows 11 user and never had this problem. Sure there might be comments saying they prefer Linux overall but that does not make the comment section less-friendly. Overall when it comes to tech questions, I have had great help (Windows, RSS-feeds, Piracy and even just Prime subtitle issues).
There’s a disproportionate number of truly toxic people on here who love preaching about their particular fixation, usually political, usually far leftist (compared to the world at large).
So toxicity is on every platform, Lemmy too. Block those who are toxic and your problem slowly but steadily solves by itself. I once read somewhere to most Tech-savvy people tend to be more Left-leaning, which is fine. If you don't agree with their viewpoints, thats fine too. Just ignore it. The problem is the more right-leaning a community becomes, the much more toxic it becomes. It becomes less about tech, debates and much more about hating 'the other'.
I, personally, are more centre-leaning and had checked more right-leaning communties and oh boy - It was pretty much 90% hates, dislikes and not so friendly things about ''the other side'', ''the other people'' and such than actual useful debates and comments.
All of those viewpoints are fine, but in moderation and without vitriol.
When I just joined, I read that Lemmy is mostly for tech-people. So it's obvious that more Linux, piracy and overall tech users are here. It does align with how people have to join Lemmy and setup their subscribes for communties and all.
I often enjoy arguing politics. But not everything has to be a crusade.
So that's the major issue with Politics. People are just hot-headed and very steadfast in their political opinion. It's obvious there will be lot of arguing and crusade. It happens on every platform (Lemmy, Reddit, X, Insta and you name it).
Not sure whether ''steadfast'' was the right word, English isn't my native langauge and kind of tried to translate the native word into English.
And for the love of Christ, I want more NSFW topics. Dating, sex, porn.
I rather not. I blocked NSFW content, there are dating apps and such. Sex and porn are categorized within the NSFW content.
For me personally, yes. But it makes the overall site worse. Like a tragedy of the commons almost.
I don't think there's anything to do against that but correct me if I'm wrong. There are rules already to try counter that problem but there's only so much a community can do against it. Every platform has this particular issue (some worse than the other).
The best thing to 'fight' against it for yourself is blocking the particular people and communties.
Maybe like there is risk involved allowing NSFW content?
I think the risk of getting certain unwanted content posted on it. Though, I'm not sure how it all works with the content that's posted and the owner of the instance. Though there are certainly NSFW communities (I, personally, just blocked them because that's not my jam).
No, I want more weirdos. Philosopher, artists, and madmen. Misunderstood geniuses on the wrong side of the law. Grown adults who play with (not collect, play with) Lego. Urban utility cyclists. Artisanal cheesemakers. Artisanal videogame makers. People rewriting the Bible for the postmodern era. Macro-scale scavenger hunters. Ghosts of Christmas yet-to-come. People who learned all their longest words from books and would only be guessing as to how they're pronounced.
And less people who are desperate to differentiate themselves from others they deem unworthy of their companionship because they…like to go out? Like to socialise with others? Ok that last one is an horrifying, alien concept to me. But come on! We have to be better than this. Please?
Personally, I desperately want more normal people on lemmy. There's a disproportionate number of truly toxic people on here who love preaching about their particular fixation, usually political, usually far leftist (compared to the world at large). If I see a discussion about the best car to buy, I don't want it dominated by a bunch of "cars suck!!" comments. If someone asks a question about an issue with Windows, I don't need to see nothing but Linux evangelism. All of those viewpoints are fine, but in moderation and without vitriol.
I definitely want communities of people like that. When I buy a new laptop, I'll probably put Linux on it and I'd love some advice. Sometimes I like having brainstorming sessions about the best way to promote public transit. I often enjoy arguing politics. But not everything has to be a crusade.
And for the love of Christ, I want more NSFW topics. Dating, sex, porn.
Almost all sex topics are on the LemmyNSFW instance. Your account should be able to "see" those. There won't be dating though, because I suppose the admins do not want to be seen as liable when a date goes horribly wrong or so.
What do you mean by normal? The lemmyNSFW instance has plenty of smut, especially if you are a guy you will probably enjoy it. Not as much discussion though, I agree with you on that, I too like the talk about sex and it's not fast moving, no.
If you just mean reasonable people, I have been lucky I guess. Haven't run into too many crazy in any direction.
I think the early adopters of online forums are always going to be sort of geeky, otherwise we wouldn't find or enjoy them. I remember the early Usenet text forums, was on a belly dancing group and like 75% of us were in tech as day jobs. Reddit wasn't always like it is now, either. Probably even Facebook started with the more geeky crowd. I am sort of an outlier in this way, older and I guess a "normie" by most definitions but not tolerant of most social media so do jump earlier.
The [email protected] is my baby here and slow and steady growth is more manageable, I have had close to zero need to moderate it at all, it has been great. So maybe follow more lifestyle stuff like that, if you want less tech focused discussion.
It all depends on your definition of normie I think. Growth for the sake of growth, no, but we are not quite at the critical mass that keeps it moving fast.
NSFW is anglospeak for "idiots' sandbox". but it doesn't work because it doesn't control the quality of contributors. just wastes bandwidth making immatures and bad communicators feel at home.
I like people who think critically themselves (and are sometimes weird in lovely ways). Often I find them to be leftists and/or Linux users. I encourage your independent thought as to why.
I'll be the guy that says it: Lemmy already leans pretty hard in normie demographics. It is a trait inherited from Reddit, as many lemmy users are former redditors.
