How Do Fallout’s NPCs Get Home? - Any Austin
  • I really do appreciate when npcs actually do something off screen rather then teleport.

I do realize, that probably for efficiency they do despawn if you're not watching them. But it's the thought that counts

  • is such a hassle it wouldn't really pass in any company

Hate to tell you, this is now the norm. Right now, today, thousands of corporate travelers!

Company creates a travel laptop, perhaps even just a completely empty kiosk laptop. Corporate traveler downloads critical data to the laptop in an enclave (like a presentation). They have a two-factor token with them. If they need to get back to the corporate network for whatever reason, they use remote desktop software and no data is stored on the local device. They're given policies telling them that if the computer is out of their possession, or view at any time, that the device is not to be used whatsoever afterwards. Contact security and let them deal with it.

When the traveler comes back to the mothership, laptop is checked into IT, it's completely wiped.

Does remote desktop software suck? Yeah. It's better than the alternative though

  • Synology plus APC Easy UPS (power chute)
  • I was surprised too. But a lot of the current NAS devices basically operate as hosting devices. It makes sense the hard drives are there the power is there the RAM is there the CPU is there. So for the low intensity containers and VMs you want to run like a Plex server, or DNS server, or tail scale it's all right there

  • Synology plus APC Easy UPS (power chute)
  • At this point, it might be easier just to buy a supported UPS. I'm glad the backups 850 is working. It's a good data point

I followed your advice, and went through the settings, and try to enable the USB device. But it's just not detected.

  • Synology plus APC Easy UPS (power chute)
  • Right now when updates get applied to the NAS, if it gets powered off during the update window that would be really bad and inconvenient require manual intervention.

In memory caching, and the Amy cashing, well I think the file system would almost certainly be in a consistent state, you might lose data in flight if you're not careful.

The real problem, that I need an nas for, is not the loss of some data, it's when the storms hit and there's flooding, the power can go up and down and cycle quite rapidly. And that's really bad for sensitive hardware like hard disks. So I want the NAS to shut off when the power starts getting bad, and not turn on for a really long time but still turn on automatically when things stabilize

Because this device runs a bunch of VMs and containers as well closing down so that all of those rights get flushed is good practice

  • Synology plus APC Easy UPS (power chute)
  • Well I'm ranting about this process, I have other complaints.

Synology.com - if you want to add a second factor to your account, requires a phone number to be the master factor, in case you lose your second factor. So if you're worried about Sim jacking, or even just not having a consistent phone number for the lifetime of the deployment, it's kind of a terrible practice. There's no way to unlink all phone numbers from an account, you can only replace them with a new phone number.

Synology does actually support hardware USB keys, but only as a secondary factor behind SMS... Ai ya.

  • Synology plus APC Easy UPS (power chute)

Setting up a Synology server, I made the mistake of just buying a UPS that had a USB plug on the back thinking oh this is a solved problem, it must just work. No no far from it.

So the UPS I mistakenly purchased is not compatible with Synology. SRV1KI-E wants to run this weird program called PowerChute.

Anyone have success marrying this into the Synology ecosystem?

It also has a RS 232 serial port, I wonder if there's an off-the-shelf device that would speak serial but output power state via the network or USB.

  • You don't need a SIM card to have a TOTP app they're totally independent

A VPN you pay for with crypto is probably more secure than driving to somebody's public Wi-Fi for this use case. Driving to a location, sitting around while uploading a massive video on public Wi-Fi, it's going to look very suspicious

  • There's an Extremely Stupid Reason NASA Scientists Can't Study China's Amazing New Moon Rocks
  • They're almost certainly never going to get authorized, the whole point of researching moon rocks is to learn space data, and of China requires that you share the data you learn from the rocks you're studying, it's impossible

  • There's an Extremely Stupid Reason NASA Scientists Can't Study China's Amazing New Moon Rocks
  • That's because the US enacted a law called the Wolf Amendment in 2011, which prevents NASA from using government funds to cooperate directly with China.

unless it has certification from the FBI that such collaboration poses no threats to national security or risks inadvertently leaking space-related tech or data.

    Tai Yai machine translation options?

I've met some people from Myanmar, communicating with them is difficult. They speak Tai Yai. Especially because I'm not aware of any machine translation option, so a third party has to get involved.

I don't believe Google translate, Microsoft translate, any others I was looking at, have a Tai Yai feature.

Are there any options for translation without involving a human?

Open Source 3D printed mouse, built today

Built out my ploopy mouse today, it's been sitting on my shelf for a while. I got the self-assembly kit, had to solder on one through hole component.

So far I'm enjoying the mouse, the right mouse button is a little sticky, but I'm sure with a little readjustment it'll fall into place.

Every part of this mouse is open source, the hardware files, the PCB, the schematic, the firmware which is QMK. There's a lot to love here.

I've been playing some video games, and so far I enjoy the mouse quite a bit.

If I do have one complaint it would be the central scroll wheel doesn't have a detent, but that might just take some getting used to

I would love to see a kinesis style pinch mouse like the DXT2.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Great device, thank you for making it open source.

Note: I ordered their USB cables, just for solidarity, and assuming they found a cable that was very effective for a mouse, the cables I received were very strong, too stiff really to be used for a mouse cable. Luckily I had some very flexible braided USB cables already. So if you're going to order from them do not order the USB cable

Applied Science - Micronics SLS nylon 3D printer makes electronic circuits

A banger video about applying sintered traces to 3d printed models... BUT more interesting then that is the use of ChatGPT to "exfiltrate" unpublished formulas for the cooper plating solution.

In the video at 8:10 Ben goes through his exhaustive search of trying to make a solution that would work, and details that all the labs keep it more or less a secret, but the application of a LLM revealed the difficult to find steps/formula needed.

Obviously ChatGPT gobbled this up somewhere... just published on the internet but Ben didn't find it? Or did ChatGPT get trained on internal/corporate documents and the LLM is actually democratizing this information?

    Casual time dyslexia

As a child I grew up on a 12 hour clock.

18-20 I had to learn 24 hour clock and use it all the time (heh).

Now as an adult I try to stay 24h but I still mentally swap 24h to 12h in my head.

So I look at the clock see 13:00 and think ok it's 1:00pm.

So far, so good.... When on a treadmill/bike watching the timer go up, I sometimes have mild confusion.

I'm doing 15:00 on this machine, ok the timer says 13:00... I have 4 minutes left. I realize my quick math and time recognition frameworks are colliding. The 13:00 gets quick swapped to a 1, and I then I do 5-1.. I've noticed this on multiple days, even though I know it's wrong.

Not sure of the right term for this, anyone else have this kind of coding confusion?

    SSN Bad Communicators

Nice slice of life film showing US Navy seabees building a undersea missile platform... from the very start the movie shows us really poor abilities to communicate. Throughout the whole film I feel like i was watching a indictment of macho culture, get it done at all cost bravado. The movie had lots to say about culture!

The alien was pretty interesting, nothing too over the top, cave creature

Why did the captian flood the research station? (to make sure they left him behind? or to end the pain quicker?)

Snyder - The utimate jobsworth, detonates 6 nuclear weapons because he can't communicate... This was... wow, I'm not even sure where to start here. Cabin crew resource management failure? No lone zone on nuclear weapons? No critical thinking skills? I know were supposed to hate Snyder as a person, but I think the real problem they are talking about is lack of decision making skills everyone here displays.

The biggest enemy in this film is the crew itself!

Overall I enjoyed it, worth a watch

    Resistance training and reasonable goals?

I've been on a bit of a health kick for the last half year or so. Changes to the diet, swimming a lot, and for the last 5 months resistance training. It's been quite enjoyable, I've had some setbacks, but also great progress. Learning a lot about gym life that I never thought about before.

My little condo gym has free weights going from 5 lbs to 50 lbs. That's been fine, however I'm now at 50lbs free weights (3 sets of 15 reps) for chest press, inclined and flat.

I don't have any specific lifting goals, just general health improvements. My program is trying to be balanced: 1 day upper, 1 day lower, 1 day functional, 2 days cardio.

is it worthwhile to upgrade to a gym that has a higher selection of weights, or is 50 lb a good enough.?

I.e. just expand volume of lifting at 50lbs to continue muscle stimulation?

Lemmy.world is too big, use other instances

Lemmy.world is very popular, and one of the largest instances. They do a great job with moderation. There's a lot of positives with lemmy.world

Recently, over the last month, federation issues have become more and more drastic. Some comments from lemmy.world take days, or never, synchronize with other instances.

The current incarnation of activity pub as implemented in Lemmy has rate issues with a very popular instance. So now lemmy.world is becoming a island. This is bad because it fractures the discussion, and encourages more centralization on Lemmy.world which actually weakens the ability of the federated universe to survive a single instance failing or just turning off.

For the time being, I encourage everyone to post to communities hosted on other instances so that the conversation can be consistently access by people across the entire Fediverse. I don't think it's necessary to move your user account, because your client will post to the host instance of a community when you make a comment in that community I believe.
